Sparked by a question @c_reider asked about performances going wrong, after my "Gameboy John” disaster where I lost a track in LSDJ just before a performance, I wrote about a season of gigs where there was always something that went wrong, and a lesson, but also a good thing.
dead batteries, one monitor between two performers, an erased track, a fuse blowing twice, communication issues...

It went well! Friday night on Thames:
My live improv set was on a boat as part of NAUS #2, an intimate live electronics night curated by Stephen Shiell as part of his residency on board. Two others on the bill amazed me: Tom Hirst playing his self-built synth modules very smoothly! and Mohammed Rowe with feedbacky textures and transients using Max!
I was the final one. A classic: Mid-set my GameBoy running LSDJ tracker ran out of battery! But I spontaneously switched to SameBoy LSDJ emulator alongside my Cardinal patch and it was OK to keep improvising. Some of the audience sat around on the floor to see things happen up close, which I liked. I definitely was not sending emails from the stage :D

Lovely instrument! Gameboy. This time running an LSDJ tracker in a non-emulator context. Love the crunchy rough sounds in the making enjoying how the commands and values generate fun results.
Just 4 channels: 2 pulse waves, 1 wave and a noise channel. Simple, portable in look but it has much inside going beyond nostalgia.
It gave me so much perspective, including smoothening my introduction to Renoise back in the day when I wanted to explore it as I just love learning and playing with a wide range of tools when I can, not just for teaching.
Great to revisit after writing so much about it in thesis context years ago.
And I would suggest you follow @defensem3ch’s work for some of the best chiptunes and learning!

Busy times… And then I went onto running the 2nd leg of a session on chip music, trackers, and demoscene. Today it was on OctaMED Amiga tracker and Akai sampler. Courtesy of Bizzy B/Brain Records an Equinox/Scientific Wax— underrepresented demoscene figures—haven’t seen them mentioned in journals… it was an attempt to take part in the efforts to give them recognition in my very own way
On another note I have not been very up to date with my lsdj and renoise jams, I am using other tools more actively, even after writing so much about them back in 2019 but I hope to present some of my 4-bit setup here. Or I may not. Who knows… I wonder if there are people who use these things in fediverse, in any style of music. I know some and I would be keen to find out more.

One thing I need to remind myself is that even though #pico8 has 4 channels for sounds I should try and keep one channel open for sound effects. Otherwise you get random events of music cutting out while playing a sound effect.
