Oh look a completely normal piece of dead wood in the moth trap this morning.

This bit of madness was in the moth trap this morning. Extraordinary looking thing; actually a kind of lacewing.
I’ve put a link to a pic of one with its head showing.

A respectable night in the moth trap: I make it 76 moths of 32 species.
Brown Scallop was the best record, only my second.
Glamour provided by a couple of Hawkmoths, Elephant and Poplar, and Blue-bordered Carpet.
Mild further interest provided by a Dun-bar which is my earliest record by 11 days. Whoo, so exciting.

It's shaping up to be a good harvest of frogs and toads this year.

The other interesting arrival was this leafhopper, which seems to be Hishimonus hamatus, an East Asian species with few UK records as far as I can tell (but more in mainland Europe).

Big night in the moth trap last night, with two new species for the garden. One is Brown China-mark, quite an attractive moth , and part of a group which is notable for having aquatic caterpillars: they make a little floating case to live in out of a couple of bits of pondweed.
The other, Batia lambdella, is almost identical to the much more common Batia lunaris except twice the size; but I haven't had B. lunaris yet this year, so I was staring at it blankly thinking “I know I’ve had that before… I can’t remember what the name is… something about it doesn’t look right though”.
Anyway I got there in the end.

Mandarin ducks striking a pose by the pond in Battersea’s Old English Garden. The male’s elaborate plumage is like nature showing off what’s possible with a paintbrush. These beautiful birds escaped from collections and made Britain their home. 🦆 #MandarinDuck #LondonWildlife #ducks #birds #ShotoniPhone #iPhonePhotography #BatterseaPark

Rose-ringed parakeet at Connaught Hall Garden Bird Café 🦜 These remarkable birds represent one of London's greatest wildlife success stories - from escaped aviaries and possibly film sets in the 1960s-70s to over 30,000 thriving residents today. The GFX100S II reveals the intricate beauty of their emerald plumage.

My first rose chafer of the year. More glamorous but less amusingly-named than its relative the cockchafer, which we don't get around here.

Finally had a chance to finish reading London in the Wild (in my local park of course). Great to have all London's exciting wildlife sites compiled in one place. Will have to make my way around to the ones I've not seen yet.

CW: Phoenix Fly
Not my best photo, but a wonderful find of a Phoenix Fly (Dorycera graminum) in my local London park from earlier this year.

CW: Adorable 24-spot Ladybird
🐞 A 24-spot Ladybird (Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata), one of the smallest of the so-called conspicuous #ladybirds from the UK measuring between 3 & 4 mm.
Still one of my favourite ladybird photos, this individual was found at #TowerHamletsCemeteryPark.

So I did an #introduction post when I was on the mastodon online server. But now that I'm on flipping.rocks, I've lost that, so...
Hi there! I am a #palaeoecologist and #naturalist. I work with #microfossils to understand ancient and modern environments/climate and human modification to these environments (#ClimateChange #ClimateJustice). I am also interested in #wildlife, and spend a lot of time recording and #photographing #LondonWildlife - #plants, #invertebrates #mammals #fungi etc. I’d love to meet like-minded people :)
