  3. Our last workshop for the Paleo 2026 Symposium was a great one! Dr. Julien Divay showed us how to identify different fish species from their microfossils. It was amazing to see how tiny details in the patterns of their vertebrae or other features could be used to accurately tell apart different fish! What a great way to end off our symposium!

  4. We had a great first fossil sorting session of 2026! Some really incredibly preserved teeth and fish bits this time.

If you're sad that you missed your chance, no worries! We have three more sessions before the summer:
    Sunday, Feb.8
    Sunday, Feb. 22
    Sunday, March 8

Everyone is welcome! If you're in the Calgary area, why not give it a try?

    See albertapaleo.org/events/fossil for more information.

  10. Save the Date!

New dates for our popular microfossil sorting have been announced:
    - Sunday, October 26
    - Sunday, November 2
    - Sunday, November 23

All sessions will be from 1 - 3:30pm in rm. B140 at Mount Royal University, Calgary.

Join us to sort through Eocene sediment to help the research of Dr. Theodor and Dr. Dutchak!

No experience necessary - all are welcome!

  11. Today I found this planktonic foraminifera in a Turonian slab. It was sheared off by glaciers somewhere, transported and eventually dumped north of Berlin. Is it Archaeoglobigerina cretacea ? Maybe a professional can tell. // See more at foraminifera.eu/collection.php

  12. These days we have passed the 23,000 mark in our database. A big thank you to our contributors from all over the world for sending sediments, specimens, images and help with identifications. #foraminifera #microfossils #fossils #paleontology #MarineLife #MarineScience

  13. Another successful microfossil sorting session! This one included a lot more unusual finds.

1 - Fish barb with spines (ouch!)
    2 - Multituberculate molar - rare!
    3 - Ungual phalanx

If you're interested in joining the illustrious group of volunteers that finds these fossils, our next event is Sunday, March 2, from 1 - 3:30pm at Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB. Everyone is welcome!

  14. Thanks to everyone who came out to help us sort Eocene microfossils - it was our largest turnout yet!

Our next event will be Sunday, January 26 from 1 - 3:30pm at Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB, Rm. B140. Everyone is welcome to come help find fossils!

    See albertapaleo.org/events for more details.

  15. Foraminifera or just pseudofossil rock chips ???
    I picked about 50 specimens from 10g of a disintegrated Jurassic shale. I think these are compressed agglutinated forams. Whats your opinion ? #foraminifera #microfossils #Jurassic #fossils #MarineLife #paleontology

  16. Beat the winter blues with microfossil sorting! Join members of the APS this Sunday, January 12 from 1 - 3:30pm in rm. B140 at Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB, to sort through fossil matrix from the Eocene of Sakatchewan. We'll be looking for mammal teeth, fish bones, and anything else we can find.

Anyone is welcome to attend, and we'll have people ready to get you started and show you how everything works.

  17. I found several shallow water foraminifera as this Ammonia in a sand from the German Pre-Alps. They prove its marine origin from the Paratethys ocean. The Paratethys covered about 18mya ago vast areas north of the Alps. #foraminifera #MarineLife #fossils #microfossils #Miocene

  18. Another year of microfossil sorting is at an end! Some highlights this session included a grastropod, many mammal teeth, a tiny crocodile tooth, and some amber!

Since this summer, volunteers for the APS have spent collectively 158 person-hours and sorted through a very auspicious 2024g of sediment!

Our next session will be January 12. For more details, see albertapaleo.org/events/. Everyone is welcome to attend!

  19. Thanks to everyone who came out on Sunday to help sort fossils! We found lots of teeth, fish scales, some vertebrae, and a selection of odds and ends. Pictured are a rodent incisor and molar (probably) from the Eocene of Saskatchewan.

Our next fossil sorting session is Sunday, December 1, and everyone is welcome! See the events page albertapaleo.org/events/ for more details.

  21. Have you ever wanted to go fossil hunting while sitting down in a climate-controlled room?

Aid the research of Dr. Theodor and Dr. Dutchak of the University of Calgary by searching the soil from the Cypress Hills Formation of Saskatchewan to find tiny fossils. We will be using microscopes in room B114 at Mount Royal University.

This event is open to anyone aged 12 and older.

  23. Phun with phytos!

A few thousand years ago, there was a little flowering plant near a small tell site in Iraq, and it left this really cool clue behind - evidence that it once lived :)) This is a multi-branched trichome phytolith, basically hair cells. This one may come from the Asteraceae (daisy) family (maybe maybe, still researching this one!), so one of some 32,000+ species 😳

  24. Beautiful #Foraminifera - millions of years old, silicified and mineral stained. Stunning. Mother Nature is the best artist #microscopy #microfossils

  25. Enjoyed the #microfossils presentation and hands on workshop by Dr. Ed Jarvis #UCC via CorkGeological.

Saw ancient pollen, spores & other micro-organisms from our local Devonian & Carboniferous rocks.
