Y'all are just going to have to put up with stained-glass moths from me for a while, I'm on a roll. 😊
Today's is rather infamous, the death's-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos)!

Another cocktail for a moth that was new to me last year.
The Nonpareil
2 parts Bottega dark chocolate liqueur
1 part Cointreau
1 part Amaro Montenegro
Garnish with blue sugar sprinklesThe moth is the Clifden Nonpareil, or Blue Underwing, and 'nonpareil' is also a word for a chocolate button covered in sugar sprinkles.
This isn't as sweet as it sounds, the Bottega isn't too sweet and the bitterness of the Amaro tempers it a bit. Indulgent but sophisticated.

Researchers uncover 10 new moth species and 7 new genera in Hawaiʻi
"Among the discoveries is Paalua leleole, a species in which the female moths appear unable to fly. Several of the new moths were named to honor Hawai’ian culture, including Iliahia lilinoe, named for Lilinoe, the goddess of mists on the Haleakalā volcano, on the island of Maui."

From Bluesky
Hummingbird hawkmoth recorded in Liverpool in late Winter (Feb 27th) -
I ran my moth trap for the first time this year. 36 moths of 13 species; the star of the show was a long-awaited first record of The Streamer, but also notable was an Apple Leaf Miner, a full month earlier than my previous earliest record.

One from last summer #teamMoth to cheer myself up on these chilly mothless nights
Eyed Hawk-moths are among our biggest moths. When its forewings are covering its hindwings, the head with its dark markings might ward off a predator, because it looks like a furry face staring back, but if that doesn't work, then it flashes the ocelli (false eyes) on its hindwings and that often does the trick. #pareidolia

Winter Moth (Operophtera brumata). I found this on my front door in #Bath #Somerset #UK. One of the few winter-active moths. This is a male, females have very tiny wings and cannot fly

Another cocktail for another new moth I had this year. The moth was the Dark Seedhead Moth, Apodia martinii, so the drink is:
Apodia Martini
40ml gin
10ml Pedro Ximenez sherry
dash of black walnut bitters
twist of orangeThis was a good one. Quite complex and sophisticated, almost chocolatey; the sweet sherry, walnut and orange combo is quite Christmassy.
Incidentally, the reason it doesn't have fresh orange peel as a garnish is that I got fed up with semi-peeled oranges drying up in the fridge, so I put some orange extract in a spritz bottle instead. It works fine.

Fairly apparent where the "Feathered" comes from in the name of the Feathered Thorn moth #teamMoth. The "Thorn" not so much, that's derived from the look of the larva, which is very twiggy and will set itself erect at 90 degrees to a twig on its foodplant to hide from predators in plain sight.

Another cocktail to celebrate a new moth for the garden list. The moth is Ptocheuusa paupella, the Pale Seedhead Moth or Light Fleabane Neb.
Fleabane Cocktail
25ml gin
25ml lemon juice
25ml Suze gentian liqueur
25ml CointreauThe logic here was that fleabane is a plant in the daisy family, so I should make a daisy (i.e. a sour sweetened with liqueur rather than sugar syrup). I used Suze (which is a very bitter gentian liqueur) b/c of the bright yellow colour and because the abrasiveness of it seemed appropriate for a plant which is named for its insect-repellant properties.
This was not a successful cocktail. Suze is somehow nastier diluted than when you drink it neat, and I find it very difficult to use it in cocktails. The sour/bitter combination is probably particularly hard. You could try to rebalance it, but if you cut back the Suze too much you'd lose the colour, so it's tricky.

Many moth species are thought to use the moon to orientate themselves, which works fine until they encounter an artificial light, which causes them to spiral inwards. This enables moths to easily be sampled using moth traps.

Nothing very exciting in the moth trap last night, but I did get a new species of leafhopper, Tremulicerus vitreus (assuming obsidentify IDed it correctly). Maybe the 29th species of leafhopper from the moth trap? Something like that.

Here's another new cocktail to celebrate one of the new moths I had in the garden this year.
Light Crimson Underwing
25ml reposado tequila
25ml Lillet Rosé
25ml Campari
1.25ml blue curaçao
orange twistThis is obviously just a tequila Negroni with a dash of blue curaçao to push the red towards crimson.
Clearly it would be barbaric to just use food dye to get the colour, which is why I used Campari and blue curacao, which are just food dye in a convenient booze shaped package.
Anyway, this was excellent, I might prefer it to a classic Negroni.

From the moth trap this morning: a Box-tree Moth distributing the mothy equivalent of Brut for Men.
i.e. that structure at the end of its abdomen that looks like twin shaving brushes is actually for releasing pheromones and is normally hidden. The technical term appears to be Hair Pencils.
You tend to think of female moths releasing pheromones and males following them, which is why males have the big antennae, but males are stinky too.

Another in my rather niche series: cocktails to mark additions to my garden moth list. The moth is the Kent Black Arches, so the cocktail is the Archie Kent.
12.5ml malic acid solution
20ml simple syrup
handful of blackberries
handful of raspberries
50ml vodka
dash of salineShake with ice and double strain. I added mint for the photo but I don't think it improved the drink.
The starting point for the cocktail is that the caterpillars feed on dewberry, blackberry and raspberry.
The malic acid links to the the apples of Kent (and also I had the stuff so thought I'd use it). I made it some time ago because I had the idea that I could use it in a dropper, like saline, to add to drinks to enhance the flavour. It wasn't a great idea though, at least with malic acid, it's too distinct a flavour; it's quite fruity.
The cocktail is an easy-drinking boozy glass of fruit juice: nothing wrong with it, no reason to make it again.
