  1. #Moths Can Smell With Their Wings sci.news/biology/moth-wing-olf

Noses on the wing: the olfactory capacity of #hawkmoth wings. By Ahmed Reda Ismaieel et al. journals.biologists.com/jeb/ar

"Scientists have found that #moth wings are equipped with odor-detecting receptors, suggesting the #insects use their wings — not just their antennae — to sense chemical cues in the air while flying."

  2. The illusionist

A hummingbird hawkmoth feeding on scarlet sage in a garden in Bournemouth, UK. Often mistaken for a hummingbird, the hawkmoth hovers in mid-air, beating its wings 70-85 times a second.

  4. Wings of the tobacco hawkmoth have been found to have chemosensory pores that can detect airborne pyrrolidine and piperidine, which are released by nightshade plants that the moths prefer for laying eggs.

  6. We sometimes get a Poplar Hawk-moth resting up on our deck for the day (they are more active at night). They're huge but lovely!

  8. Y'all are just going to have to put up with stained-glass moths from me for a while, I'm on a roll. 😊

Today's is rather infamous, the death's-head hawkmoth (Acherontia atropos)!

  10. @Mr_Xarii Great photo: The fascinating #hummingbird #hawkmoth (#Macroglossum #stellatarum) is native to the #Palearctic realm and is a #migrating #lepidopteran. Its conspicuous #hummingbirdlike #flight is responsible for some confusion with true hummingbirds. This text by Stefan F. Wirth

  12. Hawkmoth v0.20 is out!

Hawkmoth is a Sphinx extension to import C and C++ documentation comments into Sphinx based documentation.

The main new feature in this release is automatic configuration of the system header search paths. Unfortunately, libclang does not get them right out of the box on most distros, so we have to help it a little.

  13. Garden visitor (UK). It's the first time I've seen this enormous caterpillar.
    Elephant hawkmoth. Deilephila elpenor. Apparently.
    (Thanks to iNaturalist and friends.)

  15. I went for a walk yesterday in Zeeland and saw LOTS of caterpillars on the road at a certain point. Luckily there was little to no car traffic there. Most were black with spikes, those will become peacock butterflies (Aglais io, 🇳🇱 dagpauwoog). But I also saw a HUGE green one of the hawk-moth (Agrius convolvuli, 🇳🇱 windepijlstaart). Apparently those are rare in NL.

  17. It’s National Moth Week, July 20-28, to celebrate the beauty, lifecycles and habitat of moths, so I’m reposting my eclipse of moths (the delightful term of venery for a group of moths) and also for my #InsertAnInvert2024 wildcard week.

This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctural moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), 🧵1/

  19. We went for a little walk on our nearby trail the other evening. I don't know how I spotted this little dude but I'm glad I did! I haven't seen a hummingbird moth in years! So cute 🧡

  21. More moths later but after a mild night the first Poplar Hawk Moth of 2024 has appeared. I adore these gentle giants with their cute fuzzy faces.

  23. As a wild card post before we head into crustacean month for #InsertAnInvert2024 -an animal jokingly known as the flying shrimp! My #linocut hummingbird clearwing moth (Hermaris thysbe) seeking pollen from cherry blossoms! The olive-headed burgundy moth has transparent wings (though colour can be variable). It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee. 🧵

  26. #Scientists describe #NewSpecies related to famous Darwin's orchid phys.org/news/2024-03-scientis

    A new #orchid species expands #Darwin’s predicted pollination guild in #Madagascar cell.com/current-biology/abstr

"Solenangis impraedicta has the third longest spur ever recorded among flowering #plants, and the longest nectar spur of any known plant relative to flower size. It is the only new orchid species with such an extreme adaptation to #hawkmoth #pollination described since 1965."

It beats its wings rapidly to hover above flowers, like a hummingbird, meaning it is often confused with a hummingbird or bee.

    It has a 5 cm wingspan. 🧵1/n
