Oh how loudly we elevate the virtues of elegance and simplicity
in deafening tomes and curricula of art and architecture!
Nature skipped those lessons,
fudged all designs,
from your million base pairs of apparently unused DNA
to your messy, sludgy internals -
we are kludges, hacks, permanently on evolution’s drawing board..Maybe this is exactly why humanity
desires simplicity
so much? -
Hack achievement of the day: for both a proper animation keyframe triggering system missing from the in-house game engine, and purely out of curiosity, I decided to try out a Time Modulator (shareset in Wwise) to then sync trigger sounds from within a Blend Container. Video cap from game with a sine beep on zero frame, read timecode from Reaper project. But it works! (Mua-ha-ha!)
It is nothing but cumbersome, yet a fun hack 🥳

The hames made of the census means that my handy shortcut that brought me straight to the search for the censuses - http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ - doesn't work any more - you have to wade through reams of kludge before happening on the search form

Hackaday: ALL ABOUT USB-C: MANUFACTURER SINS
https://hackaday.com/2023/02/07/all-about-usb-c-manufacturer-sins/
From article, The First Sin:
"The first, honorary entry is omitting 5.1 kΩ pulldowns on a USB-C port intended for charging your device. “Why does my device charge with a USB-A to USB-C cable, but doesn’t charge with a USB-C to USB-C cable”, asks the user? The answer is simple – because your device’s designer decided to save one cent while building your device, and didn’t care about testing the device before selling it to you. In other words, your device is supposed to have two resistors connected to the USB-C plug, yet it does not, and USB-C power supplies are unable to detect that they ought to provide power. Remember, the resistor detection is fundamentally a safety mechanism, and by now, information about this problem is omnipresent."
The overall situation of USB-C out there does seem to be a clusterfuck.
Oy.

Me: “It’s #broken for my case, and here’s an #experiment showing how and where it can be fixed.”
Them: “That’s useful but this guy that outranks you wanted it this way and he’s out today so I can’t get him to explain it.”
Me: (engages in #kludge to try to unblock, finds another stupid resource #limit)Apparently I’m not supposed to be able to prove to others that the thing I’m working on will work. I’m 👉️ 👈️ this close to hollering to #management.

So if they’re looking at it that way, I don’t feel so bad about this #kludge that makes the ridiculous application deployment actually work (technically by coincidence) on both the old machines and their replacements.

First kludge of the year.

So, turns out my re-purposed food dehydrator can't hold two spools of filament - but it was so close I could remedy the situation by haphazardly taping on a strip of PVC I had lying around, so I did 😝
-
If that wasn't in jest, it's an electronic component - a chip in a DIP-16 package - that I had to cut the pins off of to remove it from a board, and then manually soldered replacement pins onto so I could test it out-of-circuit.
Non-hacked examples can be seen here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_in-line_package

So when Android Studio complains about this error and prompts me to fix it in Gradle's settings, how is the second screenshot helping me in any way? Why is the Android build system this awful?
Every day I have to do anything with Gradle I hate the software world a bit more.

I'd like to create a shared knowledge base using #tiddlywiki for my work team, hosted on #OneDrive / #MSTeams, and I'm worried about burdening them with the complexity of the UX of TiddlyWiki. I really just want a simple taggable #knowledgebase but that's hard to get going on an internal file sharing site where we can't run our own servers. I currently have a #markdown KB running within #Obsidian, but people are struggling with the #kludge of that solution as well.
What would you do?

@polpo @mediaarchaeologylab When I was at UCLA we needed a feedback system to control the output of a CO2 laser. Using parts on hand we grabbed a plotter. We duct-taped one end of a ruler to the print head and the other end to a the knob on the top of a rheostat that adjusted the laser output. It worked, although we ended up burning out several plotters.

In the end, I've decided something a bit different: just found (and bought!) from Amazon a #Royal #Kludge #RK61 60% #keyboard with #blue #switches, Italian ISO layout and even double-shot #PBT #keycaps for €80!
It's a 60% so arrows as secondary functions. But still it's Amazon: I'll try it and if won't like it, I can simply return it .. and probably do for the #YMDK one. -
