Microservices Are Killing Engineering Velocity (And Most Teams Don’t Even Know It) #SoftwareArchitecture #Microservices #ModularMonolith #SystemDesign #EngineeringLeadership
Everyone wants microservices. Very few teams actually need them. The truth? Most engineering organizations are trading simplicity, speed, and developer productivity for unnecessary distributed systems complexity. Before breaking your monolith, understand the real tradeoffs between microservices vs modular monoliths and why the smartest engineering teams are rethinking architecture decisions. A deep technical breakdown for software engineers, architects, and engineering leaders. #SoftwareEngineering #Microservices #ModularMonolith #DistributedSystems #Java #SpringBoot #SystemDesign #TechLeadership -

Ah yes, Jacob, the self-proclaimed Renaissance man, bravely reminding us all that our identities are more than the sum of our cubicle-dwelling, keystroke-punching existences. 🖥️ Nothing screams "I'm more than my job!" quite like whining about it on a tech blog while still clinging to the title of software engineer. 🙄 #DeepThoughts #ExistentialCrisis

It just occurred to me that it is likely that every line of code I've ever written professionally has probably been refactored away by now.
This has made me very sad. :face_frown: :pepe_sadge:

After alienating a few people with follow requests while having 0 posts, I guess it's high time I introduce myself.
Hello all o/, I'm Varstahl, a #SoftwareEngineer #RemoteWorker, but more of a Jack of all Trades in reality. #SystemAdministrator and #TechLead are also titles I worked under for my clients.
I'm a hobbyist #artist who had the pleasure of having a song broadcast live on #radio, and a #demoscener at heart. Growing up nerdy was quite difficult, it's not common to find 12 to 14 years old boys or girls studying Assembly manuals in non-native languages, just to get more insights on how computers work. Let's just say that in hindsight, yeah, I was probably the odd one out studying college level books just to foster my passion. But the search for kin ended when I attended my first #demoparty in Fallingbostel (Hamburg, Germany).
I’m driven from Hamburg to the apparent middle of nowhere in Fallingbostel, I remember fields all around and a single industrial building, with someone selling the tickets. It’s almost pitch black, and I think to myself “what have I gotten myself into, but then again I already made a 1400 km travel, I might as well bite the bullet and see where it leads”. I take 2 literal steps in, I look around, and I immediately think “these are my people”. For the first time I feel a huge sense of belonging with a whole bunch of (temporarily) strangers, and the sheer amount of hardware and interesting people in there still fills my vivid dreams: #Commodore64, #Amiga, #Vic20, #PC of all shapes and sizes, teams of a couple persons working on a real time raytracing of Stonehenge (this was 2002!), people that brought carpets from their home to decorate the hallways, guys and girls from all across Europe sharing their #technology passion in the friendliest community I have ever had the pleasure to be a part of… #MekkaAndSymposium2002 changed my life forever.
As a #demoscener I made lots of friends and I participated in and won several competitions: #StreamedMusic, #4ch #TrackedMusic, #ANSI, #ASCII, and I also had the pleasure on working on compression and packing #tools that helped a friend of mine win a #4kIntro competition at the young age of 17. I also made a few #cracktro and #intro, but those were never released so they don’t count!
Let’s see, what else:
- I still love #IRC
- I listen to (and make, sometimes) a ton of music, ranging from #chiptune to #BlackMetal, from #ClassicalMusic to #jazz;
- in the past I published some #tech and #gaming videos on my YouTube channels;
- I stream #games, #tech and #dnd campaigns on my Twitch channel (although rarely as of late);
- I’m an #OpenSource contributor and I maintain (sparsely nowadays) some modules for #Kodi that support Amazon Prime Video;
- I’m waiting for my friend @Dubmood to spin up a #mastodon named EFnet (short for Elon-Free network, @macaw.social you lost a great opportunity there);
- … and I guess that’s it for the moment.
How was that for an #introduction?

I’m Jez from the #UK. I’ve been employed as a #SoftwareEngineer since 1994 in a variety of companies. I have also made #iOS games and contributed to #OpenSource Projects including #Groovy
I was inspired to code on the #Atari400 in the early 80’s, followed by the #BBCMicro #AmstradPCW #Amiga #PCXT and #486 PCs, I still use most of these and the #FPGA #retrocomputing remakes
I also design #MechanicalPuzzles, and enjoy the theory and technique behind #CardMagic

Oh, this is #fun.
#Applebot - Apple's web crawler, used for various things - is ignoring robots.txt rules governing crawling of websites.
I have Applebot (and Applebot-Extended, which isn't really a crawler) in my robots.txt files, set to disallow all access. Has been that way for #yonks.
And Applebot is consistently the highest-traffic crawler to my sites - at least of ones that actually bother to fetch robots.txt. Yesterday, for example, Applebot fetched robots.txt from one of my websites almost 800 times.
Yes, it's really Apple, not someone faking the user-agent identifier. It's coming from the networks that Apple says can be used to identify Applebot access. DNS matches, everything.
e.g. https://support.apple.com/en-ca/119829So: legendary Apple software quality. Documented to do the right thing, but actually doing the wrong thing. And completely failing to cache content, fetching the same file 800 times a day when it hasn't changed in years.
Hey, Apple! Need a software engineer who's actually, you know, good at it? I'm available.

Event-Driven Architecture Truths #SystemDesign #EDA (And When NOT to Use It)
Event-Driven Architecture (EDA) is often promoted as the ultimate solution for scalability, decoupling, and modern system design. But what most engineers don’t realize is that EDA introduces a new class of complexity—hidden in asynchronous flows, eventual consistency, and operational overhead. In this deep technical breakdown, we go beyond the hype and uncover the real trade-offs of event-driven systems. You’ll learn why debugging becomes exponentially harder, how schema evolution can silently break systems, and why most teams underestimate the cognitive and operational load of distributed architectures. We explore real-world challenges like duplicate events, out-of-order processing, and failure handling using retries, dead-letter queues, and idempotency strategies. More importantly, we explain when NOT to use event-driven architecture—something rarely discussed but critical for making the right architectural decisions. This guide also introduces a practical hybrid approach that balances synchronous reliability with asynchronous scalability, along with advanced patterns like orchestration vs choreography. If you’re a software engineer, architect, or engineering leader working with microservices, Kafka, or distributed systems, this is a must-read. Stop blindly adopting trends. Start designing systems your team can actually understand, debug, and evolve. #EventDrivenArchitecture #SystemDesign #Microservices #DistributedSystems #SoftwareArchitecture #Kafka #Scalability #BackendEngineering #TechLeadership #CloudArchitecture -

To be clear, #ActualBudget was REALLY getting good when I left - felt like jumping ship right as it hit its stride
They've added custom reports with Excel-style formulas, a burndown chart, and the UI keeps improving. Genuinely great #opensource budgeting software
But as a #SoftwareEngineer, the scriptability of #beancount is a huge win. I can pipe data through #fzf for fuzzy account selection, write #Python scripts that understand my finances, and build weird custom tools that would be impossible in a GUI app
Sometimes you just need to "grep" your money

As a #productmanager I sometimes get feelings of "the grass is greener" and begin to envy my #engineering counterparts, who I imagine have it simpler, having fewer meetings, less #officepolitics, less #stakeholder bullshit, and more "heads down work." Moreover, they get the satisfaction of actually #building things and objective feedback.
But then I remember I am good at my job and #dev is really hard.
I'm curious: do #softwareengineer feel the same thing, in reverse?
