  7. 4 apps in #FreedomBox have the word Wiki in their name. This makes reviewers think that there are 4 Wiki apps in FreedomBox.

    theregister.com/2026/01/22/deb

#FeatherWiki and #TiddlyWiki are notebooks. They are supposed to be a better alternative to syncing a folder of Markdown files using Syncthing to your FreedomBox.

I don't think they are even meant to be used for the same purpose as MediaWiki. They don't have user management or even a backend for that matter. They are literally HTML files!

  8. A German #translation has been added to #FeatherWiki by codeberg.org/heino17! Thank you so much for your contribution!

Find the download on the Downloads page:

If you want to get your language added to Feather Wiki, you can also contribute a translation! Instructions can be found at feather.wiki/?page=translation

  9. Along with the new version, the Auto Table of Contents extension (feather.wiki/?page=extensions_) has been updated to improve how it scrolls to the headings on a page after clicking a link in the table of contents. Now it scrolls directly to the heading and does not re-render the page contents, which previously caused the page content to be pushed down after navigating to the heading.

  10. Feather Wiki version 1.8.2 "Woodlark" has been released! It includes some small fixes and adds hyperlinks to tags listed at the top of pages.

    Check out the details here:
    codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather

The website has also been updated to reflect the changes:
    feather.wiki

Please let me know if you run into any problems with the new version!

  11. Since the next version of #FeatherWiki won't be ready for release until the full test suite is written and writing the tests is taking forever, I'll be releasing one more patch version in the lark family (1.8.x) to fix a couple of minor bugs later this week.

  12. Finally got some scaffolding set up for using Selenium to automate testing #FeatherWiki to make sure future changes don't break stuff! I've written 2 tests so far, and I have a bunch more to write so wish me luck!

  13. I just published an update to the Transclusion extension (feather.wiki/?page=extensions_) that makes it adjust the page content before rendering, preventing the issue with flickering that was present before!

If you are linking to the extension from the feather.wiki website, then it should update automatically. Otherwise, you will need to copy the extension file to your Feather Wiki to get the fix.

  15. Feather Wiki version 1.8.1 "Meadowlark" has been released! It includes a fix for adding images to the visual editor and an improvement for clarity.

    Check out the details here:
    codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather

The website has also been updated to reflect the changes:

  16. I'm preparing a 1.8.1 patch for #FeatherWiki that should be ready Soon™. And then fairly soon after that, I'll be working on a 1.9.0 release that integrates all the remaining dependencies into the project itself and reduces the file size by roughly another 4 kilobytes again!

I believe this will likely be the final size reduction possible, but who knows, maybe I'll discover some other way to shrink it even more in the future ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  17. A Traditional Chinese (zh-TW) #translation is now available for #FeatherWiki thanks to the wonderful @nacly! Thank you for your contribution!

If you want to get your language added to Feather Wiki, you can also contribute a translation! Instructions can be found at feather.wiki/?page=translation

  18. A Simplified Chinese #translation (zh_CN) is now available for #FeatherWiki thanks to the remarkable @redhossu! Thank you so much for your contribution!

  19. A Hungarian #translation is now available for #FeatherWiki thanks to the fantastic @erion! They even included translations for all extensions that display text 🤯 Thank you so much!

Find the download on the Downloads page:
    feather.wiki/?page=downloads
And the translated extensions are indicated on the affected extension pages.

If you want to get your language added to Feather Wiki, you can also contribute a translation! Instructions can be found at feather.wiki/?page=translation

  20. A Japanese #translation is now available for #FeatherWiki thanks to the marvelous BALLOON | FU-SEN (github.com/fu-sen)! Thanks so much!

Find the download on the Downloads page:

If you want to get your language added to Feather Wiki, you can also contribute a translation! Instructions can be found at feather.wiki/?page=translation

  21. After consolidating all of the dependencies that #FeatherWiki uses into the project itself and stripping all the features it doesn't use, I managed to shave off 4 more kilobytes 🤯 Now I can use that extra space for some quality of life features like CSS variables for easier theming & extra settings toggles!

What other small-but-helpful addition would you like to see added to the Feather Wiki core? (no, I still won't add search to the core)

  22. I was able to get the bug fixed in the build script in order to get translation builds working! Coming soon: Spanish, Polish, and Brazillian Portuguese translations for #FeatherWiki!

  23. Some lovely folks have contributed Spanish and Polish #translations for #FeatherWiki recently, but I have to chase down a bug that's preventing translated builds of Feather Wiki from running properly... I'll update again when they're available!

  24. Tried out the new Python framework FastHTML, by implementing a Feather Wiki Nest in it.

    njoseph.me/gitweb/featherwiki-

It can be run against a local Syncthing folder or just a local folder while supporting "save wiki to server" option in the browser.

    FastHTML: fastht.ml

Maybe this app is not complex enough to make good use of the features of FastHTTP.

  25. The #translation contribution guide is now available! If you want to translate #FeatherWiki into your own language to help others use it more easily, follow the instructions in CONTRIBUTING.md:

    codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather

There are 2 methods included: one for those comfortable making pull requests and another for those who are not. And if you're not up for making a full translation, I'd appreciate help ensuring new translations are accurate as they are created.

    Thanks in advance!

  26. I'm working on an update to the source code that will enable translating #FeatherWiki into other languages!

The translations happen at build time and not on the fly to keep the files as small as possible, so don't expect full UI customization. Also some necessary repetition of text will add a few bytes to the final size, but that cost is worth finally allowing other UI languages to be easily added!

I'll announce when #translation contribution instructions are ready if you want to help 😄

  27. If you're using any official extensions from feather.wiki/?page=gallery#ext then be sure to also update your extension URLs when you upgrade to Skylark!

Moving forward, updated extensions now include the lowest compatible #FeatherWiki version number in the URL. Updating the URL for official extensions should be as simple as adding `v1.8.x/` between `extensions/` and the `.js` filename, but the extension's page will have the authoritative URL listed if you're uncertain.

  28. A couple of new extensions have also been added to the #FeatherWiki gallery:

The Autolinker extension automatically turns text URLs on your pages into clickable links without any additional markup:
    feather.wiki/?page=extensions_

The Word Count extension adds a simple word counter below the text entry area of the page editor:
    feather.wiki/?page=extensions_

These are the first #extensions that are not backwards compatible, so make sure you update your Feather Wiki to the newest version before trying them!

  29. Feather Wiki version 1.8.0 "Skylark" has just been released! It includes several bug fixes and unifies the previous builds into a single download for improved simplicity.

Check out all the details here:
    codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather

The website has also been updated to reflect the changes:
    feather.wiki

Please let me know if you run into any problems with the new version!

  30. Added a section to the FreedomBox Manual page for Syncthing - "Note-taking and Journaling", mentioning only free software that I've used myself.

  31. #FeatherWiki / #nginx question: I'm trying to set the PHP nest on #envs codeberg.org/Alamantus/Feather, but trying to set credentials just redirects me to the same page (and no .featherwikiadmin file is created). Anyone able to help me find out why?

The nginx configuration is git.envs.net/envs/ops/src/bran and git.envs.net/envs/ops/src/bran

  32. I was having some small issues with FeatherWiki so switched my personal wiki/digital garden to TiddlyWiki, but to be honest while I find TiddlyWiki very easy to use and really pretty (at least with my current theme, it's not as useful on mobile but I really like it in the browser: wiki.gersande.com) it takes a fucking age and a half to load. Frustrating. I don't want to deal with more complex self-hosted wiki-software because I'm self-hosting and love the drag-and-drop-html-file TiddlyWiki approach. Do I just... accept that it's going to be slow?

  33. Genuinely considering taking my #TeaGarden (gersande.com/tea/) and turning it into garden or jardin dot gersande or something and having a general knowledge wiki for my notes.

I really love the idea of a personal knowledge wiki, but I also kind of want to be able to set privacy settings on certain pages. Or have a full offline version of this wiki that lives on my computer and then a public version up on the block. Hrm.

    ---

ETA: I'm messing around with a #FeatherWiki here at wiki.gersande.com — the tea wiki will remain up for a good long while as I transfer pages.
