Then she said the sentence that would outlive her by four years and travel all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States: "Dr. Shepard has poisoned me." The doctor was her husband, Charles A. Shepard, a major in the Army medical corps, and the government would later argue he had salted that whiskey with bichloride of mercury because he loved a woman named Grace Brandon and his wife declined to divorce him. Zenana Shepard died on the fifteenth of June. Her husband was convicted of her murder, and her sentence, the spoken one, did much of the convicting. […] -

I just reread A Town Called Alice, which a Nevil Shute online group will caht about Sunday. The first third or so of the novel describes a death march by women and childrenmade prisoners by the Japanese in WWII Sumatra (fictively relocated to Malaya). While a very dufferent story, in tone and history, I was struck by the curious parallel with Love's A Shipment of Tarts, a retelling of the repeated (but not deadly) relocation of sex workers by American authorities during an earlier war. -

@Tony_Meredith Thanks for drawing my attention to the relevance of #PrideAndPrejudice to #UKpolitics today. 225 years ago #Britain had a #Tory #PrimeMinister pushing for a fairer society with a #LivingIncome & an expansion of #WelfareBenefits. He was supported by many enlightened landowners but undermined by proponents of low taxes, #TrickleDownEconomics, & #charity. All astutely observed by #JaneAusten!
