I just reread A Town Called Alice, which a Nevil Shute online group will caht about Sunday. The first third or so of the novel describes a death march by women and childrenmade prisoners by the Japanese in WWII Sumatra (fictively relocated to Malaya). While a very dufferent story, in tone and history, I was struck by the curious parallel with Love's A Shipment of Tarts, a retelling of the repeated (but not deadly) relocation of sex workers by American authorities during an earlier war.
