Really wild stuff coming out of the University of Colorado from this OpenAI deal. Take this quote for instance:
«Before AI tools became ubiquitous, students and junior workers typically turned what they learned into artifacts—they would write a software function, develop a mathematical proof, draft an essay or sketch out a design... Now that AI can easily create artifacts, such outputs can no longer be considered the endpoint of mental work.»
This is how disconnected these people are from what academics, or anyone creative, actually do. I know a chatbot likely regurgitated this line, but someone chose to post it.
If that wasn't enough, OpenAI's president gave millions of dollars to Trump almost simultaneously with this deal going though at CU. It's absurdly easy to follow the money.

Are there any good #FOSS alternatives to #Mozilla #Thunderbird with #NoAI ? When I was at the University of Denver I installed Thunderbird once so I could have a local copy of my work emails (through Microsoft), then I deleted it. I've now tried the same trick at CU Boulder (also Microsoft) and been told I need to request access to use Thunderbird. This still might work to back up my emails, but lately I've been thinking it would be nice to have an application instead of using a web client so I get local backups automatically and have a clearner interface. Is there anything good in this space that hasn't been subject to #enshittification ?

It seems that CU Boulder spent a bunch of the state's money on creating an AI-generated video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkDLk4PqTLc) which must be viewed by faculty in order to fill out a conflict of interest form. I wonder if there were any conflicts of interest in the waste of resources this represents. Can professional researchers not be expected to read a page of instructions?

Attending the International Learning Assistant Alliance conference today at #CUBoulder. This is a conference I've attended many times, but this will be my first time doing outreach as a representative of a large federal science research funding agency.

I've now completed a day and a half day of training on how to do some of the most fundamental #election jobs assisting voters at a #polling place during the election.
So-called "e-Pollbook Judge" work involves looking up voters in a registration system, registering them if they aren't currently registered, and printing and delivering various types of ballots to the voters.
The half-day "Tech Judge" training involved learning how to help voters who want to use the touchscreen "Ballot Marking Devices" (aka BMDs) including how to inspect the tamper-evident seals that are used to secure the various data connection points (eg, USB ports) that are vulnerable to tampering if a threat actor cared to mess with how it works. The BMDs include assistive technologies, which help people with a range of physical or visual disabilities fill out their ballot.
Most of what we'll be doing will involve helping voters who are not long term residents, who may not even be registered to vote in Colorado (the vote center will be located at the UMC at the University of Colorado in Boulder).
One of the services least well used is something called "Mail Ballot To Go" (#MBTG) which was more widely used in 2020, when the pandemic was in full swing and no vaccines were widely available to address COVID. Voters who use MBTG call a phone line and arrange to have a ballot brought out to them at their car at a time they schedule, not unlike grocery pickup. The clerk & recorder still allows voters to use MBTG though we would prefer it if you would just come inside to vote in person if you must come to the polling place.
I'm very excited to do my second presidential election as an election judge. It's going to be a busy one, even though most voters in Colorado will get their ballots in the mail sometime in the next week. I hope to see you at the polls! Don't wait until November 5th - polls open the week of October 21 in Boulder county.

Today to honor Steve #Wozniak, who gave the commencement address to undergraduates at #CUBoulder, at @mediaarchaeologylab I pulled out an old app that is part of the Whacked #Mac Archives, curated by the #L0pht.
The app's sole purpose is to pull a series of fuzzy, heavily dithered PICT format bitmap images out of the ROM of a #Macintosh SE (and no other model). This was an easter egg of epic proportions - photos of the early people who worked at #Apple Computer, burned into the silicon that powers the computer. Seeing these images was a bit like what I imagine an alien species would feel when they play the golden record on Voyager for the first time.
Sorry for the weird bars on some of these photos. I'll try to get clearer ones next week.

The #CUBoulder Department of Ethnic Studies wrote a powerful justice-oriented statement a few weeks ago calling for a ceasefire and Palestinian liberation, explicitly informed by intersectional, anti-racist, and decolonial feminist, queer, and trans scholarship. They immediately came under fire from many sources, including the Chancellor, President, and the local newspaper. I stand with the Department's freedom of expression, and have signed this letter.

I was out stumping for votes on the #CUBoulder campus yesterday and I'll be back this morning.
I heard a lot of excuses from students why they couldn't vote. "I'm late for class" or "Not interested" but also a lot of disingenuous "I already voted."
I know you've been told that "this is the most important election of our lifetime" like, what, six times in a row since 2016?
Well, guess what: *every* election will fall into this category until we can vote out insurrectionists, fascists, and people who gleefully want to make life worse for people they don't like.
