  7. A quotation from Shakespeare

PROSPERO: Though with their high wrongs I am struck to th’ quick,
Yet with my nobler reason ’gainst my fury
Do I take part. The rarer action is
       In virtue than in vengeance.

  8. A quotation from Shakespeare

PROSPERO: Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits and
       Are melted into air, into thin air;
And like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capped towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on, and our little life
       Is rounded with a sleep.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) English dramatist and poet

FERDINAND: O heaven, O Earth, bear witness to this sound,
And crown what I profess with kind event
If I speak true; if hollowly, invert
What best is boded me to mischief. I,
Beyond all limit of what else i’ th’ world,
       Do love, prize, honor you.

       Open-eyed conspiracy
          His time doth take.
If of life you keep a care,
       Shake off slumber and beware.
          Awake, awake!

And by that destiny to perform an act

       In yours and my discharge.

  12. A quotation from Shakespeare

ARIEL: Full fathom five thy father lies.
          Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes.
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea change
       Into something rich and strange.
       Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell.
                        Ding dong.
Hark, now I hear them — ding dong, bell.

  13. A quotation from Shakespeare

    ARIEL:                                 Not a soul
But felt a fever of the mad, and played
Some tricks of desperation. All but mariners
Plunged in the foaming brine and quit the vessel,
Then all afire with me. The King’s son, Ferdinand,
With hair up-staring — then like reeds, not hair —
Was the first man that leaped; cried “Hell is empty,
And all the devils are here.”

  24. @muiren

    Good article.

I agree. What’s the justification for a remake of one of the most influential science fiction films ever?

The movie ‘Forbidden Planet’ itself is a retelling of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’ which has been reworked in so very many stage and screen adaptations and homages. One really has to wonder at the mix of unconstrained ambition and unvarnished derivativeness of the EP and screenwriter.

That said, Star Trek, Star Wars and other science fiction fans who haven’t seen the original definitely should.

  26. I boarded the king's ship; now on the beak,
Now in the waist, the deck, in every cabin,
I flamed amazement: sometime I'ld divide,
And burn in many places; on the topmast,
The yards and bowsprit, would I flame distinctly,
Then meet and join. Jove's lightnings, the precursors
O' the dreadful thunder-claps, more momentary
    And sight-outrunning were not ...
