  1. Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

  4. Chet Baker, Chet, 1959 on Riverside

The labels carry a subtitle of “Ballads by Chet Baker,” and the rear cover suggests “The lyrical trumpet of Chet Baker” but most people just call it Chet. Riverside RLP 12-299 (mono) and RLP 1135 (stereo).

He’s joined here by Pepper Adams, Paul Chambers, Herbie Mann, Bill Evans, and Philly Joe Jones / Connie Kay splitting drums duty, plus Kenny Burrell on two tracks. The liner notes (by Orrin Keepnews) say “Pianist Bill Evans . . . is just beginning to attract real public attention, but has for some time been the object of extreme praise from fellow musicians.”

My copy is a 2021 reissue by Craft Recordings (CR 00359) pressed at RTI with lacquers cut by Kevin Grey – via Beatnick Records in Montreal QC – which sounds fantastic.

  5. Milt Jackson Quartet - The Nearness of You

This seems to be the UK version of the Prestige s/t LP from 1955.

Basically, it's the MJQ without John Lewis. Subbing for Lewis - Horace Silver. And subbing for blues-influenced jams, a series of standards.

  6. Milt Jackson - In A New Setting

Excellent 1964 set by Jackson, McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Heath (sax), Bob Cranshaw (bass), and (of course) Connie Kay (drums).

From what I’ve read, the CD of this suffers from a degraded master tape. This, though, is an original 1964 Japanese pressing in fine form (there’s some tape saturation on the piano, typical of the recording style).

    And what a great cover…

  7. Milt Jackson & Coleman Hawkins - Bean Bags

1958 session with Bags, Hawkins, Kenny Burrell (guitar), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Connie Kay (drums), and Eddie Jones (bass) - kind of an all star lineup there - and it’s as great as those players promise.

(Stereo Japanese promo pressing in great shape, albeit with a stained jacket.)

  8. ”For a while, it is true, so many bossa nova or pseudo-samba albums were being recorded that everyone, musicians and businessmen alike, spoke of the movement as if it were an ephemeral novelty and predicted that the overproduction would soon run it into the ground.”

    You don’t say.

  9. That full liner note graf:

“It is a curious and gratifying fact that although almost three years have elapased since Stan Getz decided to bring the jazz samba to North American audiences, the consequent commercial uproar did not turn out to be a nine-day wonder.” (Cont…)

  10. Milt Jackson - Jazz ‘n’ Samba

Starting this LP and asking…”what’s all this about Samba, then, Milt?” is forgivable…because all of side 1 is the “Jazz”. The “Samba” kicks in with side 2 and you can’t blame Bags for wanting to cash in a little.

The liner notes are amusing: “…spoke of (samba) as ephemeral and predicted that overproduction would run it into the ground.”

RvG definitely turned the dials up to 11 when recording this one…maybe 12.

  11. The Modern Jazz Quartet - Concert in Japan ‘66

This is a rare album, only issued in Japan, and only in mono (as it was recorded), 10 years after it was recorded. (Four tracks appear in the MJQ: 40 Years CD box set.)

It's *well* worth hunting down. Here's some info/background:

    jazzhistoryonline.com/mjq-conc

Fantastic performances all around (as you'd expect from MJQ), six weeks before Blues at Carnegie Hall.

  12. The Modern Jazz Quartet - The Last Concert

Spoiler alert: it wasn't the last concert. But they didn't get back together until 1981 after they broke up in 1974, and then continued until Bags' death in 1999.

They're playing like it's for the last time, recapping many of their classics with lots of energy and verve. Avery Fisher Hall is a great venue, too, and the recording is excellent.

    A must-have.

  13. Cannonball Adderly (with Bill Evans) - Know What I Mean?

    We do, Mr. Adderly...we do.

An MJQ/Evans Trio crossover event with Evans on piano (of course), Cannonball as leader on sax (of course) and…Connie Kay on drums with Percy Heath on bass.

Yes, this is as great as that sounds.

Recent OJC release, remastered, flat, silent...good stuff.

  14. Paul Desmond & Gerry Mulligan - Two of a Mind

Desmond on Alto and Mulligan on baritone sax, with Connie Kay of the MJQ on drums. Lots of great interplay between the band, that pretty distinctive Desmond sound, and a great recording from 1962.

A mix of interesting takes on standards and one each from Desmond and Mulligan. Warning: as you'd expect from the title, some title puns incoming.

  15. Paul Desmond (feat. Jim Hall) - "Bossa Antigua" (1965)

Desmond's play on "bossa nova" ("new thing") was "bossa antigua" ("old thing" in Spanish), although the Portuguese "bossa antiga" would be a more accurate translation of PD's joke.
