  1. This week I listened to "Sunday at the Village Vanguard" [1] by the Bill Evans Trio.

There are many great #piano trios, but this combo really stands out. Impeccable taste combined with humility and understatement. What a wonderful piece of art.

I remembered bassist Scott La Faro in the wake of the news of Glen Hansard's passing, while pondering how many artists humanity has lost way too early.

Both Scott and Glen could have graced us with so much more of their works, but at least their recorded legacy will stay with us.

    Let's enjoy the beautiful things.

  2. `Motian noted, "We were supposed to make a record date with Miles [Davis]: the trio, Bill, myself and Scott. ... We were talking to Miles about it, it was all set up, and then Scott got killed and the whole thing got forgotten."`

  4. BILL EVANS TRIO
    Waltz For Debby
    1985 U.S. reissue

Another perfect choice for a delightful, lazy Sunday afternoon.

I’m a big fan of the quiet-ish mellow Bill Evans records, and other than You Must Believe In Spring, this might be my favorite one.

It’s so laid back, so beautiful, and one of those all-purpose any time, anywhere kind of records.

    Maximum Sunday chillage.

  5. Bill Evans and Jim Hall, Intermodulation, 1966 on Verve

This was a follow-up to 1962's Undercurrent, which also featured Hall and Evans. Produced by Creed Taylor and recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in two sessions in April and May 1966. It's just Evans on piano and Hall on guitar, starting with two standards ("I've Got You Under My Skin" and "My Man's Gone Now") and then a number of more contemporary tunes, including originals by Evans and Hall as well as Joe Zawinul. My copy—via Mystery Train in Gloucester MA—is a 60s pressing with Van Gelder […]

  6. Just made this now using my iPhone and an app called Tape It. I’m playing a Yamaha S6 Grand Piano while hanging out in my office on campus. This is “Here’s That Rainy Day.” I decided to take inspiration from one of my favorite pianists, Bill Evans, especially some of the beautiful modulations he uses in his version.

  7. Brian Bromberg - LaFaro

Bass legend Bromberg covers a range of LaFaro-featured tracks with pretty impeccable tone, accompanied by Tom Zink (piano), and Charles Ruggiero (drums).

Very well recorded and pressed to boot. Note, though, that the LP is missing four of the CD (or streaming) tracks.

  8. Bill Evans, Evans in England, 2019 on Resonance

Another late sixties (December 1969) set from Evans, Eddie Gomez, and Marty Morell, recorded at Ronnie Scott's. (Live at Ronnie Scott's, released in 2020, came from recordings made in July of 1968). Great production and packaging. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvX6ZG0jAYA My copy—via private sale—is the Record Store Day 2019 2xLP deluxe edition, numbered and limited.

  9. Bill Evans - Behind the Dikes

One of the yearly RSD Evans release—this one from 2021. Basically, two concerts from 1969 in the Netherlands with Evans (piano), Eddie Gomez (bass), and Marty Morell (drums). Nice included booklet with interviews and photos.

Some unfortunate tape warble during the second concert, but good anyway!
