  1. Thanks to the Internet I now know more about #ElvinJones and a whole new universe has revealed itself for discovery.

  2. Amusingly, after playing A Love Supreme (which had only been recorded with Rudy Van Gelder seven months before), the promoters requested that they play "more familiar material" the following nights.

    If only they knew.

A bit more space here to say that Charly was able to reconstruct the full A Love Supreme, which takes up 3 sides of the 4LP set.

  3. John Coltrane Quartet - France 1965: The Complete Concerts

This is going to be a Coltrane-heavy year, given his centenary, and RSD26 has a few releases to mark the occasion.

This 4LP set documents the two concerts the Quartet did in France during their week-lone stint in Europe.

This is well known for being the quartet's *only* live, full recording of A Love Supreme (reconstructed by Charly).

  4. Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

  13. Archie Shepp - Four for Trane

Co-produced by Coltrane, this is Shepp's Impulse debut, featuring, as you might expect, all tracks penned by Coltrane.

But that doesn't mean they're *profoundly* altered by Archie Shepp and crew.

Shepp (sax) is joined by John Tchicai (alto), Alan Shorter (trumpet - Wayne's brother), Roswell Rudd (trombone), Reggie Workman (bass), and Charles Moffett (drums)/

  14. Great suggestion for a Sunday morning:

“Could you call on Lady Day?
Could you call on John Coltrane?
Now, ‘cause they’ll, they’ll wash your troubles,
    Your troubles, your troubles
    Your troubles away”

  16. Realised last night that I'd never listened to #JohnColtrane 's Love Supreme all the way through. I had just watched #Drumeo and their excellent dive into the drums on the album.

I've corrected that now and yes, it's everything people said it was. open.qobuz.com/album/006025374

Definitely up there with Miles' Kind of Blue for me.

  22. Early Friday finish, returned home to this & so I’m #NowSpinning #TheloniousMonk with #JohnColtrane from the all new #Craft reissue of the #OJC series &, on the basis of a first listen, it’s a beaut. High quality tip on jacket & reproduction of the original artwork, flawless pressing, incredible musicianship & playing which is delicate & wild, melodic & then inventive in turn.

This is cut by #KevinGray & so the SQ is bang on.

  23. Listening to a little #Jazz tonight. This is an interesting version of John Coltrane's #Naima, from John McGlaughlin's After The Rain. He's joined by the late Elvin Jones and Joey DeFrancesco. I'm not always a fan of McGlaughlin's playing, but this arrangement with a #B3 an interesting texture.

    youtube.com/watch?v=CU7ICk_Fi5

This is probably one of my favorite tunes. I love how dark it is with a tinge of blues, but how it manages to brighten up as well. Kind of what I need on a rainy night.
