  1. Thanks to the Internet I now know more about #ElvinJones and a whole new universe has revealed itself for discovery.

  2. Amusingly, after playing A Love Supreme (which had only been recorded with Rudy Van Gelder seven months before), the promoters requested that they play "more familiar material" the following nights.

    If only they knew.

A bit more space here to say that Charly was able to reconstruct the full A Love Supreme, which takes up 3 sides of the 4LP set.

  3. John Coltrane Quartet - France 1965: The Complete Concerts

This is going to be a Coltrane-heavy year, given his centenary, and RSD26 has a few releases to mark the occasion.

This 4LP set documents the two concerts the Quartet did in France during their week-lone stint in Europe.

This is well known for being the quartet's *only* live, full recording of A Love Supreme (reconstructed by Charly).

  4. OK, how about some more of the John Coltrane Quartet, augmented with a brass section arranged by Eric Dolphy and McCoy Tyner, representing wildlife? Dense, layered, modal, gorgeous. Listen to "Africa" (1961):

    #JohnColtrane (tenor)
    #McCoyTyner (piano)
    #ReggieWorkman (bass)
    #ElvinJones (drumming)

and more!, if you check Wikipedia.

  5. So what would happen if you put Wayne Shorter in front of John Coltrane's rhythm section? Blue Note records asked this question! Listen to "Twelve More Bars to Go," from "Juju" (1965):

  6. Listen to "Dear Lord" (1965) by the John Coltrane Quartet. I first heard this on the LP "Transition." It forms the most gentle interlude between two hugely powerful compositions. I hope you can feel the restrained power and energy of this band.

  7. Stan Getz & Bill Evans, Previously Unreleased Recordings, 1974 on Verve

Sometimes just referred to as Stan Getz & Bill Evans, this was recorded in 1964 but not released until 1974. Ron Carter (A side) and Richard Davis (B side) on bass, with Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio in Englewood Cliffs NJ and produced by Creed Taylor.

There’s a whole series of “Previously Unreleased Recordings” advertised on the rear jacket. Beautiful sounding LP well packaged.

My copy—via Worcester Record Riot—is of the 2024 UMG/UMe reissue, overseen by Chad Kassem from Acoustic Sounds.

  13. Superb sounding session of the classic Coltrane quartet. It's as if Coltrane is playing in my room.

  15. John Coltrane, A Love Supreme, 1965 on Impulse!

Accompanying Coltrane here are McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums. Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder in Hackensack in December 1964 but not released until 1965.

Arguably Coltrane’s masterpiece (perhaps second to Giant Steps?) and still one of his best selling albums (and platinum certified by RIAA). The chant of “a love supreme” during the opening phase “Acknowledgement” is Coltrane himself, apparently overdubbed 19 times – atypical for the kind of recordings Van Gelder was doing in the mid-sixties.

My copy is a 2021 reissue in orange vinyl – Impulse! orange – that was sold in multiple retailers (I got it via the uDiscover music online store owned by UMG).

  16. John Coltrane - "Blue World" (2019/ recorded 1964)

It's been a while since I've given this a spin. Just an awesome recording from Coltrane's famous quartet.

  21. I found a cd recently of a Grant Green album called "Matador". Recorded in 1964 but apparently not released until 1979, it features McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones. I wouldn't have expected Grant Green to fit together with half of Coltrane's group, but it's really good:
