  6. The best thing added in #TinaTurner's iconic cover of "The Best" is that gloriously cheesy sax solo. It's what I miss when I listen to the #BonnieTyler version. It's even absent in the cover she did with Jimmy Barnes! Of all the covers I've listened to today, there's only one other one which kept the solo at all!

  15. "Jazzman" is a 1974 song performed by #CaroleKing, from her album #WrapAroundJoy. King composed the music for the song, while #DavidPalmer (formerly of #SteelyDan) wrote the lyrics. The song is best known for its lengthy #saxophone solos, performed by #TomScott, while King sings an ode to 'the Jazzman' and the effect he has on her. #CurtisAmy, saxophonist, composer, and former musical director for the Ray Charles band, was the 'jazz man' of the song.

  22. On today's new episode of The Tonearm Podcast, saxophonist and composer Caroline Davis joins us to discuss 'Fallows', her debut solo album. Davis recorded the twelve-track set entirely alone during an artist residency at Ucross, Wyoming, using prepared saxophone techniques and an Organelle processing unit.

The conversation covers the making of the album in close detail: aluminum cans dragged across a saxophone bell, hand-built drum sequences assembled through Pure Data patches, and the ancestral figures — Steve Lacy, Geri Allen, Thich Nhat Hanh, and Connie Crothers — whose presence Davis summoned throughout the sessions.

  37. In this excerpt from the new episode of The Tonearm Podcast, saxophonist Ben Wendel explains how he built the BaRcoDe ensemble by consulting vibraphonist Joel Ross, generating a list of about fifteen players, and then selecting four whose approaches were distinct enough to give him the widest possible palette—describing the goal as assembling the "Avengers of Mallet Players."
