The Perfect Instrument to Start With

One of the first questions aspiring musicians and parents ask is, “Which instrument is the best to start with?”

The answer may be surprising: there is no single perfect instrument—only the right instrument for the right learner.

As a music instructor and mentor, I’ve taught students who began with the piano, guitar, drums, violin, saxophone, and voice. I’ve discovered that success depends less on the instrument itself and more on the learner’s interest, commitment, and quality of instruction.

The best instrument is one that inspires you to keep learning.

1. Start with Your Interest

Passion is a powerful motivator.

If you enjoy the sound of the violin, you’ll be more excited to practice it. If you’re fascinated by the drums or inspired by the piano, let that interest guide your decision.

Learning becomes more enjoyable when you genuinely love the instrument.

2. Consider Your Goals

Ask yourself these questions;

• Do you want to play in a church band or orchestra?
• Do you dream of becoming a music producer?
• Would you like to accompany yourself while singing?
• Are you preparing for music examinations or a professional career?

Your goals can help determine the most suitable starting point.

3. The Piano Is an Excellent Foundation

If you’re unsure where to begin, the piano is one of the best instruments to start with.

It helps you understand: Music Theory, Rhythm, Melody, Harmony, Ear training, and Sight-reading.

Many professional musicians who play other instruments first developed their musical foundation through the piano.

4. Every Instrument Develops Unique Skills

Each instrument offers something valuable:

• Piano builds a strong overall musical foundation.
• Voice develops musicianship and expressive communication.
• Guitar is versatile and ideal for accompaniment and songwriting.
• Drums strengthen rhythm, timing, and coordination.
• Violin develops precision, listening skills, and musical sensitivity.
• Saxophone enhances breath control, tone production, and musical expression.

There is no “superior” instrument—each contributes to your growth in different ways.

5. Choose Commitment Over Convenience

The instrument you choose is only the beginning.

Progress comes through consistent practice, quality instruction, patience, discipline, and willingness to learn from mistakes

A committed learner will often achieve more than someone with a better instrument but little dedication.

Die achte Ausgabe des „jazzklubs“ besticht nicht nur durch die exquisite Auswahl der Songs, die von keinen Geringeren als Wayne Shorter, John Coltrane, Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker und Sam Rivers stammen, sondern auch durch ein überaus unterhaltsames Gespräch mit Martin Hanisch, der, neben diversen Holzblasinstrumenten, auch Gitarre bei den „Oschies“ spielt.

In diesem „jazzklub“ spielt er allerdings Tenor-Saxophon, zusammen mit Claudius Stallbaum, der das Alt-Saxophon bedient. Und – wie sich herausstellt – spielen die Beiden zum ersten Mal seit 17 Jahren wieder miteinander.

Außerdem ist Jonas Schneider am Schlagzeug mehr als bloß die Vertretung von Hannes Lingens, sondern eine willkommene Abwechslung im rhythmischen Bereich.

Abgerundet wird das Ganze durch Albrecht Brandt, der mit seinem Kontrabass nicht nur das Fundament des Groove besorgt, sondern auch heiter und lehrreich durch den Abend moderiert.

Random Thoughts

I am wrapping up my lunch break on this random Wednesday in March and I thought I’d jot down a couple of thoughts for posterity. Ready? Okay, let’s roll….

• Want to know something that sucks? I brought two ounces of Planters Salted Peanuts with me for lunch today (14 grams of protein). I took a small handful (my gastric bypassed body can’t handle more than a small handful at a time without getting sick) and popped it into my maw. I chewed it up a little (again, part of the post-gastric bypass world means chewing the holy hell out of everything, which sounds silly and obvious [like, didn’t you chew the holy hell out of everything before surgery? I thought I did, but apparently not] but until you fail to chew something down enough you can’t really understand) and suddenly and without warning I had to sneeze. Know what’s gross? Sneezing with a mouthful of partially chewed up peanuts… that’s what’s gross. Worse? 20 seconds after you sneeze, when you think you’ve recovered and cleaned up the mess… you sneeze again. Ugh.
• Elon Musk posted to his nazi social media site that he didn’t understand why people are out to get him. He said he sells things that are good and that he’s never hurt anyone. Never hurt anyone? Are you fucking kidding me, you fucking moron? This nazi fucker’s end can’t come soon enough. Deport his moronic ass to mars and be done with it.
• We have a contractor coming tomorrow. We have two contractors coming Friday. March 2025 will go down in family history as the month of the contractors. We just can’t get away from them. Please please please let this be the end of it for a while.
• We are one week and one day away from the start of the Boston Red Sox 2025 season. No matter what happens, they can’t be any more painful to watch than the Bruins were this year. Even if they come in dead last again it still won’t suck as badly as the B’s. I’m thinking about signing up for an online subscription to NESN (the New England Sports Network. The TV network that carries both the Red Sox and the Bruins). I think my days of being a radio-only Red Sox fan might be coming to an end. I haven’t decided one way or the other yet, but I think it’s going to happen… we’ll see.
