  1. Dexter Gordon - Dexter Calling

You know, I've decided I'm in agreement with Jerome Sabbagh—hard panning is the way to go for jazz combos.

This recent Tone Poet rerelease is from a 1961 session with Gordon (tenor), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums)...a definitely "you are there" recording, save for the traditional Van Gelder "piano under a blanket".

  6. Dexter Gordon, Dexter Calling, 1962 on Blue Note

Released in mono in 1961 and in stereo in 1962, this was Gordon’s second album on Blue Note, following quickly after Doin’ Allright and five years after Daddy Plays the Horn.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his studio in Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Gordon is joined by Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, and Kenny Drew. Liner notes by Leonard Feather, produced by Alfred Lion.

My copy is from the VMP Anthology The Story of Blue Note Records, which was first issued in 2019 and then reissued in 2024 – my copy is from that second edition.

  14. The glass of Bordeaux that I’ve been slowly sipping on is almost empty, and I’m not far from flipping this record to side 2. Relaxing in a comfy chair listening to great music is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Added this to an order from a Discogs seller because it was 5 bucks…it’s in pristine condition, and sounds amazing - even though it’s one of those thin floppy records! (Eat your heart out heavyweight vinyl people!) And the streak of “I have never been disappointed by a #BlueNote” continues. After side B I expect a glorious slumber.

  19. I have not regretted a single #BlueNote LP or CD I've ever bought - new or old. Just wrapped up #DonaldByrd's Royal Flush, and put #DexterGordon's Our Man in Paris on the turntable. These were both new acquisitions this past weekend when I dipped a toe across the "irresponsible" line…

These new classic #Vinyl series reissues though…the wax is dead quiet, you can hear the musicians humming/muttering to each other in parts of the songs…I wouldn't say I have a "high end audiophile system" by any stretch of the imagination but damn these sound good.

  22. In "Clubhouse" di Dexter Gordon osserviamo una classica progressione armonica discendente. Ho provato a trascriverla e analizzarla, per capire meglio come funziona un brano bebop.
