Dexter Gordon - Dexter Calling

You know, I've decided I'm in agreement with Jerome Sabbagh—hard panning is the way to go for jazz combos.

This recent Tone Poet rerelease is from a 1961 session with Gordon (tenor), Kenny Drew (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums)...a definitely "you are there" recording, save for the traditional Van Gelder "piano under a blanket".

i paid six bucks for it a few years ago ... i'll bet i could still get a couple bucks for it!

it bears mentioning that paul chambers went to my high school

tommy flanagan is also from detroit, but he didn't go to cass tech, he graduated from northern (as did my father before him)

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

Meeting of some greats here - Montgomery (guitar), joined by the Wynton Kelly Trio (Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums)), along with Johnny Griffin (tenor).

Listen to one of the most beautifully constructed alto solos ever. Julian Adderley on "Freddie Freeloader," from "Kind of Blue" (1959). He's the fourth soloist, at about 9:46. Gorgeous.

Chet flies from California to NYC to take a bite out of the 1958 Big Apple. Meeting him here are Miles' rhythm section (Philly Joe Jones & Paul Chambers), along with Al Haig (piano), and Johnny Griffin (tenor).

Lots of melodic songs with good playing all around, and the rhythm section pushes everyone into a less West Coast style.

De-Dah – Elmo Hope Trio

I’m in the middle of marking examinations so I will only do a brief post, while I take a short break, to follow up on the one about Hampton Hawes I did a couple of days ago. When I wrote that one it struck me that there are rather a lot of great musicians, especially pianists like Hampton Hawes, who were never appreciated as much as they should have been. Another that springs to mind is Elmo Hope, for whom Thelonious Monk seems to have been a great influence and who therefore provides an interesting contrast with Hampton Hawes who was perhaps more influenced by Bud Powell. Elmo Hope died young, largely because of a bad drug habit, which also affected his career through his erratic behaviour and the criminal record he acquired for drugs offences. He was a really fine musician and composer, though, with a very original voice and idiosyncratic sense of time. This track was recorded in 1953 with Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums, both of whom were to find fame with Miles Davis a few years later.
