  1. Art Pepper, Gettin’ Together, 1960 on Contemporary Records

Pepper joined here by Paul Chambers (bass), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Wynton Kelly (piano) and Conte Candoli (trumpet, on three tracks). That makes this another LP with Miles Davis' rhythm section, as the earlier Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section was. Rounding out for now my recent Art Pepper pickups (say Art Pepper Pickups five times fast), my copy—direct from Craft Recordings—is the 2024 Acoustic Sounds Series reissue mastered by Bernie Grundman and pressed at QRP.

  2. i'm not wild about this LP — it's ok, but maybe i should make space on my shelf and spin something new (i mean old) in its place

i paid six bucks for it a few years ago ... i'll bet i could still get a couple bucks for it!

it bears mentioning that paul chambers went to my high school

tommy flanagan is also from detroit, but he didn't go to cass tech, he graduated from northern (as did my father before him)

  3. Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

  4. Herbie Hancock, Inventions and Dimensions, 1964 on Blue Note

Hancock is joined by Paul Chambers, Willie Bobo and Chihuahua Martinez—though it’s not really what you’d call a Latin jazz album so much as post-bop or modal.

Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at his Englewood Cliffs studio.

My copy—direct from Blue Note—is the 2019 Blue Note 80 Vinyl Series reissue mastered for vinyl by Kevin Gray and pressed at Optimal Media GmbH – sounds great.

  5. Here are two versions of John Coltrane playing the Billy Eckstine ballad, "I Want to Talk About You." First, from "Soultrane" (1958).

  8. I should add this one to Discogs, since this Japanese promo version hasn't been listed yet.

  9. Art Pepper - Gettin' Together

Not quite sure what the recording order of this and the other just-before-60s-prison LPs was. This is with very close to the "Meets the Rhythm Section" group, and in similar style as well.

Added to Wynton Kelly (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Jimmy Cobb (drums), we’ve got Conte Candoli on trumpet.

  10. Rare day off work & #NowPlaying #Cookin’ with the #MilesDavis Quintet.

    I love these #Prestige recordings & the line up here is unbelievable: #JohnColtrane, #RedGarland, #PhillyJoeJones, & #PaulChambers.

This is from #OJC, likely cut from digital, but it really does sound good, particularly for the money. Despite the light weight card, the reproduction of that iconic sleeve is on point.

#Workin’ (OJC) arrives tomorrow to complete the series.

  11. #NowPlaying #SoulTrane - one of my favourite #albums by #JohnColtrane. #RedGarland on amazing form, & #PaulChambers underpinning everything that is good here. #IWantToTalkAboutYou is just magical, & that reoccurring riff on #GoodBait.

I think that the recording is maybe just so so, but this #KevinGray for #AnalogueProductions fantastic #Prestige series sounds incredible - balanced, detailed, lush, but pacey where it needs to be.
