  1. Lee Morgan - The Rumproller

After 1964's The Sidewinder (which I thought I'd featured, but can't find) was a success (Blue Note's biggest), you can't blame a guy for bringing the guys into the studio in 1965 to record The Rumproller, a quick follow-up in similar style...with similarly fun results.

With Joe Henderson (tenor), Ronnie Mathews (piano), Victor Sproles (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums).

  6. I've missed out on knowing, who Billy Higgins († 2001) was for almost 60 years, until last week. So in the spirit of best wishes for 2026:

Dance of the Clones - Billy Higgins
    by jazznik2 on YouTube

No, it's the drummer. What an elegant, excellent, well-versed & melodicly playing rhythmicist.
I've watched all those otherwise non-crediting YT videos already, along the lines of "Extended Drum Solo".
What's your album recommendation for when Mr. Higgins wasn't just featured as a side man?
The more experimental, the more sound painting, the better for me.
    Thank you in advance.

  7. Morgan accompanied by Herbie Hancock, Jackie McLean, Billy Higgins, Hank Mobley and Larry Ridley. Very enjoyable album.

    Lee Morgan - Cornbread

    (2019 – Worldwide, Tone Poet, Stereo 180 Gram, Blue Note – B0029911-01, BST 84222)

  8. Lee Morgan - Cornbread

Given this was recorded in '65, it starts off sounding more "late 60s" to me, for some reason.

Morgan, here, is joined by Hank Mobley (tenor sax), Herbie Hancock (piano), Jackie McLean (alto sax), Larry Ridley (bass), and Billy Higgins (drums). The set is four Morgan tunes and one standard (Ill Wind). Ceora is, indeed, a standout.

  9. Hank Mobley - Third Season

Yet another one of those “recorded in 1967 but released years later” Blue Note albums, this strong set by Mobley, Lee Morgan (trumpet), Cedar Walton (piano), Billy Higgins (drums), Walter Booker (bass), Sonny Greenwich (guitar), and James Spaulding (alto) is well worth seeking out.

I’m not sure the last track works, but the rest is a very enjoyable, swinging hard bop set.

  10. Donald Byrd - Royal Flush

    I guess it's 1961-day here.

An enjoyable hard bop session, and Herbie Hancock's Blue Note debut, accompanying Byrd (trumpet), Butch Warren (bass), Billy Higgins (drums), and Pepper Adams (sax).

Nice, un-limited remaster has that distinct RvG sound (including putting Hancock's piano in a cardboard box).

  11. The Descendants of Mike and Phoebe - "A Spirit Speaks" (1974)

This album features siblings Bill Lee (bass), Consuela Lee Moorhead (piano), Grace Lee Mims (vocal), and Cliff Lee (fluegelhorn). The group was named after slave ancestors of the Lee family. This is an extraordinary record and one of the gems of the #StrataEast catalog.

  12. Milt Jackson - At the Kosei Nenkin

1976 live album on Pablo, recorded in Japan, playing a swinging set with Ray Brown (bass), Teddy Edwards (sax), Cedar Walton (keys), and Billy Higgins (drums).

Japanese pressing retains most of the Pablo style, but without the huge Pablo Live top.

Interesting to note that Japanese gatefolds always come with the first LP in the 2nd (back) location.

  13. Archie Shepp - "Attica Blues" (1972)

Fabulous reissue from #ImpulseRecords The sound of this lp is so much richer and deep than any digital version I've heard. A+

So many great musicians on this, including Shankar of #ECMRecords fame on violin, which would have made this possibly his earliest appearance on a recording.

  18. Listening to Don Cherry

A well-meaning friend and music connoisseur knew of course about my weakness for Don Cherry and the CD of "Art Deco" is also in the collection for decades. Now also as vinyl. And I may state once again: what a pleasure to have this beautiful work in the collection. If only because of the beautiful cover in 30x30cm.

  23. I just got Third Set, the third and final installment of the #CedarWalton Quartet's live recordings in Copenhagen for #SteeplechaseRecords (1983). These guys were at the top of their game, and the recording has so much live presence. The sound is immediate, the performance is full of energy, and the #jazz is top-notch. Walton does precision surgery on the ivories with his performances, all without machines. #CedarWaltonQuartet #BobBerg #SamJones #BillyHiggins #vinyl
