  1. Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

  13. Milt Jackson, Ballads & Blues, 1956 on Atlantic

Jackson’s most well know as the vibraphonist in the Modern Jazz Quartet but he also collaborated and recorded with many other bop musicians. Here he is joined by Lucky Thomson (sax), John Lewis (piano), Skeeter Best (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Kenny Clarke (drums), Barney Kessel (guitar), Percy Heath (bass), Lawrence Marable (drums), and Barry Gailbraith (guitar). (Lewis and Clarke had […]

  14. Milt Jackson Quartet - The Nearness of You

This seems to be the UK version of the Prestige s/t LP from 1955.

Basically, it's the MJQ without John Lewis. Subbing for Lewis - Horace Silver. And subbing for blues-influenced jams, a series of standards.

  17. Milt Jackson - Night Mist

1980 brings another great Milt Jackson set for Pablo, this time fronting a pretty killer septet including Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis on tenor sax, Eddie Vinson on alto, Art Hillery on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Larance Marable on drums.

  18. Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).

  20. Milt Jackson - Ain’t But a Few of Us Left

Another Pablo gem with Jackson, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown and Grady Tate.

I don’t know whether Brown was playing an electric bass here, but there’s certainly a lot of bass oomph on this particular recording.

  22. Milt Jackson - In A New Setting

Excellent 1964 set by Jackson, McCoy Tyner (piano), Jimmy Heath (sax), Bob Cranshaw (bass), and (of course) Connie Kay (drums).

From what I’ve read, the CD of this suffers from a degraded master tape. This, though, is an original 1964 Japanese pressing in fine form (there’s some tape saturation on the piano, typical of the recording style).

    And what a great cover…

  25. Milt Jackson & Coleman Hawkins - Bean Bags

1958 session with Bags, Hawkins, Kenny Burrell (guitar), Tommy Flanagan (piano), Connie Kay (drums), and Eddie Jones (bass) - kind of an all star lineup there - and it’s as great as those players promise.

(Stereo Japanese promo pressing in great shape, albeit with a stained jacket.)

  34. Milt Jackson - Jazz ‘n’ Samba

Starting this LP and asking…”what’s all this about Samba, then, Milt?” is forgivable…because all of side 1 is the “Jazz”. The “Samba” kicks in with side 2 and you can’t blame Bags for wanting to cash in a little.

The liner notes are amusing: “…spoke of (samba) as ephemeral and predicted that overproduction would run it into the ground.”

RvG definitely turned the dials up to 11 when recording this one…maybe 12.

  37. The Modern Jazz Quartet - Concert in Japan ‘66

This is a rare album, only issued in Japan, and only in mono (as it was recorded), 10 years after it was recorded. (Four tracks appear in the MJQ: 40 Years CD box set.)

It's *well* worth hunting down. Here's some info/background:

    jazzhistoryonline.com/mjq-conc

Fantastic performances all around (as you'd expect from MJQ), six weeks before Blues at Carnegie Hall.

  40. The Modern Jazz Quartet - The Last Concert

Spoiler alert: it wasn't the last concert. But they didn't get back together until 1981 after they broke up in 1974, and then continued until Bags' death in 1999.

They're playing like it's for the last time, recapping many of their classics with lots of energy and verve. Avery Fisher Hall is a great venue, too, and the recording is excellent.

    A must-have.
