  1. Milt Jackson & John Coltrane, Bags & Trane, 1961 on Atlantic

Jackson and Coltrane are joined by Hank Jones (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Recording supervised by Nesuhi Ertegun, engineered by Tom Dowd.

Great LP, bringing together Milt Jackson (Bags) of The Modern Jazz Quartet and John Coltrane (Trane) who had a year earlier put out Giant Steps. I’m not always a fan of the vibraphone but love how it plays off of Coltrane on this album.

My copy—via a private sale—is the 2017 reissue by Rhino Vinyl, in mono, pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal GmbH. Sounds great.

  4. Milt Jackson - Night Mist

1980 brings another great Milt Jackson set for Pablo, this time fronting a pretty killer septet including Eddie “Lockjaw" Davis on tenor sax, Eddie Vinson on alto, Art Hillery on piano, Ray Brown on bass and Larance Marable on drums.

  5. Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).

  6. Milt Jackson - At the Kosei Nenkin

1976 live album on Pablo, recorded in Japan, playing a swinging set with Ray Brown (bass), Teddy Edwards (sax), Cedar Walton (keys), and Billy Higgins (drums).

Japanese pressing retains most of the Pablo style, but without the huge Pablo Live top.

Interesting to note that Japanese gatefolds always come with the first LP in the 2nd (back) location.

  7. Milt Jackson - Bags' Bag

Milt, Ray Brown (bass), Cedar Walton (piano), Frank Severino & Billy Higgins (drums), Jerome Richardson (sax) and John Collins (guitar) team up for a series of swing and bossa nova-ish tracks…with some surprise vocals in there, too.

As always with these Milt Jackson albums, the standard is incredibly high.
