  6. (I always wanted to play like Freddie Hubbard when I played trumpet as a kid. It's nice to have unrealistic goals.)

  7. Bill Evans - Interplay

Jim Hall is featured so much on this great album that I'm surprised he's not considered the leader.

Anyway, great new mastering on OJC/Craft of this 1962 classic with Evans (piano), Hall (guitar), Freddie Hubbard (trumpet), Percy Heath (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).

Essential music, mastering, pressing, and if you've only got an old copy, worth the upgrade.

  12. Horace Silver, Horace Silver Trio, 1956 on Blue Note

BLP 1520, originally released in 1956. Horace Silver on piano with Art Blakey on drums and three different bass players on different cuts: Gene Ramey, Curly Russell, and Percy Heath. Compiles recordings from two earlier 10″ releases: 1953’s New Faces – New Sounds and 1954’s Vol. 2. Sabu Martinez joins on “Message from Kenya.”

Excellent hard bop album – maybe lesser known than the Horace Silver and the Jazz Messengers (BLP 1518) also released in 1956. Recorded at WOR studios in New York.

My copy is part of the Vinyl Me Please Anthology The Story of Blue Note Records, second edition. You can tell it’s the second edition because the labels correctly identify it as mono, where the first edition had stereo labels.

  15. Thad Jones - The Magnificent Thad Jones

Jones' Blue Note follow-up after Detroit - New York Junction ( mas.to/@dnanian/11080482305941 ), this release part of the Classic Vinyl Series.

This is an even better set than the last one, with great playing by Jones, Percy Heath (bass), Max Roach (drums), Barry Harris (piano), and Billy Mitchell (sax).

  20. Charlie Parker, The Mercury & Clef 10-inch LP Collection

This 2021 box collects / reproduces the 10″ LPs put out in the early 1950s:

    • Charlie Parker With Strings (1950)
    • Charlie Parker With Strings #2 (1954)
    • Bird and Diz (1952)
    • Charlie Parker Plays South of the Border (1952)
    • Charlie Parker (1954)

I don’t normally collect 10″ records, but got a good deal on this box, which is very well made, reproducing original covers and labels, and with an included book. Neither of the two “Charlie Parker With Strings” LPs actually has the #2 on it which can get confusing – the one with the two birds on it is the second. Most of these reproduce their Mercury labels except for the one just titled Charlie Parker which was only on Clef.

Artwork on all these covers by David Stone Martin. Players with Charlie Parker include Bernie Leighton, Buddy Rich, Ray Brown, Mitch Miller, Max Roach, Al Haig, Percy Heath, Thelonius Monk, Curly Russell, and Dizzy Gillespie (among others). Norman Granz wrote most (all?) the sleeve notes and supervised the recordings.

Still available in the Verve Store (and elsewhere I’m sure) it is well worth picking up.

  27. Milt Jackson Quartet - The Nearness of You

This seems to be the UK version of the Prestige s/t LP from 1955.

Basically, it's the MJQ without John Lewis. Subbing for Lewis - Horace Silver. And subbing for blues-influenced jams, a series of standards.

  32. Miles Davis and Milt Jackson - Quintet / Sextet

Or should I say Miles Da Vis? (Sheesh, that some kerning.)

Hard to believe this came out *four weeks* after Blue Moods back in the mid-50s. Anyway, it’s a nice gathering of top players, including Jackie McLean (whom Davis had critical words about his drug use, but he seems to be in fine form).
