A relatively chill last spin of the night.

Tommy Flanagan’s wonderful tribute to THELONIOUS MONK; constructed from Monk compositions, and executed in a fantastically lyrical and fluid way by Flanagan and his piano trio.

It’s way more understated and elegant than Monk’s recordings, making it a perfect late-night listen. George Mraz (bass) and Art Taylor (drums) keep things light as to make Flanagan and his piano the absolute star.

The title track is Flanagan’s lone composition here, and it fits in with everything else seamlessly.

The record shows just how timeless and elastic Monk’s pieces are, handled here by another genius pianist.

So fucking good, man.

i'm not wild about this LP — it's ok, but maybe i should make space on my shelf and spin something new (i mean old) in its place

i paid six bucks for it a few years ago ... i'll bet i could still get a couple bucks for it!

it bears mentioning that paul chambers went to my high school

tommy flanagan is also from detroit, but he didn't go to cass tech, he graduated from northern (as did my father before him)

Part of the very enjoyable Pablo re-release series from Analogue Productions, this has two greats from different eras—Benny Carter (alto) and Dizzy Gillespie (trumpet)—playing with Tommy Flanagan (piano), Joe Pass (guitar), Al McKibbon (bass), and Micky Roker (drums).

A mix of styles and tempos from this sextet, and a nice listen.

I’m sitting here listening to different versions of the jazz classic Giant Steps by John Coltrane. So far none of them come close to the original. I like the Courtney Pine version and even the Kenny Garrett rendition, but for some reason that original take from the titular album is a masterpiece.
