  1. RNA chaperone Hfq assembles into #condensates in response to stress in #Ecoli, but what leads to Hfq’s #PhaseSeparation? This study shows that #polyphosphate scaffolds the formation of Hfq condensates, which then stabilize polyA transcripts critical for recovery @PLOSBiology plos.io/4tI0xby

  2. Today I gave a short talk at the #EMBO workshop on Intracellular and organelle mechanobiology. I’m grateful to have been able to share my postdoc project and for the questions/comments! The whole workshop has been super interesting, I have taken a lot of inspiration away from the talks so far and I am excited to for the rest of the day/week. 3. `..phosphorylation of Optineurin by TBK1 induces the formation of filaments that phase separate upon binding to linear polyubiquitin.. the condensation of filamentous Optineurin with ubiquitylated cargo promotes the nucleation of cargo and its subsequent alignment with LC3-positive nascent autophagosomes, suggesting that co-condensation processes ensure directionality in selective autophagy`

  4. "These results have broad implications for biological processes regulated by membrane potential, particularly in contexts such as neuronal signaling, where condensate interactions with membranes may play a previously unrecognized regulatory role."

  5. PRPP amidotransferase (PPAT) is rate-limiting in purine synthesis. This study shows that PPAT forms intracellular #condensates in response to high purine demand via #PhaseSeparation (driven by TORC1-mediated macromolecular crowding of cytoplasm) @PLOSBiology plos.io/3Yw2VVb

  6. A new doctoral network supported by @MSCActions & UK Guarantee Scheme launches: "#Condensates at #Membrane Scaffolds-Integrated Systems as Synthetic Cell Compartments" (@ComeInCell). 17 #PhD positions open!

  7. Condensates in Wnt/beta-catenin signaling: this study shows that formation of #BetaCatenin biomolecular #condensates that include the TF TCF/LEF1 is required for transcriptional activation of #Wnt target genes #PLOSBiology plos.io/3XU8qgG

  8. Bit late posting this here: Out now on #biorxiv: our grad student Katie took a deep dive into how different #IDRs affect the behaviour of #CBP #condensates in the nucleus. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/20

  9. `HCR3 encodes J3, a co-chaperone..which acts to target protein aggregates & biomolecular #condensates to the disassembly chaperone HSP70..promoting proteasomal degradation..a network of HCR3 & HSP70 chaperones facilitates #proteolysis of HEI10, thereby regulating interference & the #recombination landscape. These results reveal a new role for the HSP40/J3-HSP70 chaperones in regulating #chromosome-wide dynamics of recombination via control of HEI10 proteolysis`

  12. Scientists find link between #photosynthesis and 'fifth state of matter' (#BoseEinsteinCondensate)

"#Photosynthetic light harvesting is taking place in a system that is at room temperature and what's more, its structure is disordered—very unlike the pristine crystallized #materials and cold temperatures that you use to make #exciton #condensates."

  13. “A University of Chicago study found links at the atomic level between photosynthesis and #exciton #condensates—a strange state of physics that allows energy to flow frictionlessly through a material. The finding is scientifically intriguing and may suggest new ways to think about designing electronics”

  14. 🧬 Malfunctioning #condensates in the cell can lead to the rare #BPTA syndrome, but also common diseases. This is a new #DiseaseMechanism, discovered our researchers in collaboration with #Charité Berlin and #UKSH, and published in the journal @Nature

  15. Happy to share new collaborative work on #singlemolecule imaging of biomolecular #condensates. They're less uniform than they seem! With #PappulabWashU @TingtingWu #MattKingLab #MinaFaragSci #WashUengineers

  16. ...they 'just' correlate. It could very well be that the formation of condensates is a consequence of the difference observed rather than the cause. It could very well be that #condensates are a byproduct, a passive result of physical-chemical properties of highly abundant non translated mRNAs and their interacting proteins, and don't have a function per se. This, I would argue, should be the working model, until proven wrong. The end. 5/5

  17. Let me rant about #condensates a propos this commentary👇. IMHO it illustrates a lot of the things that are wrong in #biology. From the top we are told "researchers are trying to work out how these ubiquitous beads form and what they do" [the condensates]. I would argue the first question should be "do they do anything?", but biologists abandoned 'Ockham's razor' long ago. The most parsimonious explanation would be condensates have no function... 1/n
