  1. What's the point of Richard Deniss' new #Podcast "What's the Point?", if the #AustraliaInstitute doesn't include an #RSS feed link for the show? #AusPol

  2. People and pets’ lives at risk if fire ants not eradicated, study finds

If Australia does not ramp up fire ant eradication efforts, the invasive species will cause billion-dollar economic impacts…

  3. Listening to the latest #AustraliaInstitute Dollars & Sense podcast, #NSWPol premier Chris Minns sounds dumber than a box of hammers. How did this lightweight clown ascend to such a role?

  4. The latest #AustraliaInstitute podcast with Allan Behm and host Dr. Emma Shortis contains an interesting observation about one of the factors behind #USia being so thoroughly outwitted by #Iran; namely, that #American "diplomats" / negotiators just aren't that bright, skilled, or educated, when compared to their Iranian counterparts.

#USPol folks might find it interesting as an external perspective.

  5. We've given away $63.8 billion in gas export windfalls since 2022 while families struggle with childcare & uni fees.
A simple 25% LNG export tax could've funded free university/TAFE OR free childcare for years.

  6. Aussies pay more tax on a stubby than the gas barons pay on billions in exported LNG.
Senator Pocock is spot on: time to end the great gas giveaway. Slap a flat 25% tax on exports, rake in billions for housing, health, & renewables instead of letting multinationals leach our resources for peanuts.
Beer taxes > PRRT? That’s not a policy, that’s a scam. Fix it now!

  7. Aussies are stunned: Treasury just confirmed we’ll rake in $2.7B from beer excise in 2025-26… but only $1.5B from PRRT on our massive offshore gas exports. We’re one of the world’s biggest LNG exporters, yet multinational gas giants pay less tax than punters pay on a slab.
This is broken. Gas companies dodge super-profits tax with endless deductions while everyday drinkers get slugged. Time to fix PRRT, slap on real royalties or a flat export tax, and build a proper sovereign wealth fund for future generations—not corporate handouts.
Why are we taxing beer harder than billion-dollar gas rip-offs? Tax the extractors, not the exhausted.

'Australia is rich. The average income per person is the 12th highest in the world, and despite our small population we are the world’s 15th biggest economy. Despite this, our business community remains determined to keep this one of the lowest taxed countries in the world, which makes those of us who rely on public schools, public hospitals and public transport feel poor'

  9. #EnvironmentLaws #FossilFuels #ALP and #Coalition

    the #AustraliaInstitute has launched a petition;

they say “Environment Minister Murray Watt is working on a deal to rewrite our federal environment laws. This is necessary, because everyone agrees our existing laws are failing.

But instead of working with the Greens and independents to strengthen them, Labor is seeking a deal with the Coalition. It means Australia’s new environment laws will need the support of climate sceptics like Matt Canavan, who recently called for renewable projects to be replaced by new coal plants.

What we need is strong environment laws that actually bring an end to new coal and gas projects.

Add your name to demand strong environment laws that can stop new coal and gas now!

    ———

“To the Hon. Murray Watt MP, Minister for the Environment --

The Australian public voted for a climate majority at the last election, and we want strong environment laws that can stop new coal and gas.

Every new coal and gas mine damages nature. We urge you to strengthen – not weaken – Australia's environment laws.

  11. It’s International #Law now folks. We could hope that any country which purports to defend the international rule of law will abide by the ruling. Time will undoubtedly show the hypocracy of many such States, especially the #US under #Trump. #Oxfam has lauded the Court’s decision:
    <Quoting from Live #AustraliaInstitute.org

“Oxfam is proud to have supported young climate defenders from the Pacific and elsewhere who bravely took their fight for justice from a classroom in Vanuatu to the world’s highest court. They won the world a tremendous victory today.

This ruling elevates national climate commitments everywhere by confirming that countries must reduce emissions enough to protect the universal rights to life, food, health and a clean environment. All countries, particularly rich ones, now have to cut their emissions faster and phase out fossil fuels. Rich countries have to increase their financing to Global South countries to help them reduce emissions and protect their people from past and future harm. This is not a wish-list – it is international law.

We now have a powerful tool for holding countries to account for their obligations, especially in protecting the world’s most marginalized people and future generations of humanity. The ICJ rejected arguments by the likes of the US and UK that governments are bound only by climate treaties such as the Paris Agreement and did not have stronger obligations under international law. This ruling will inject new impetus into negotiations at the COP30 Summit in Brazil this November.”

    prompt disclosure of political contributions."

  15. We have been trained in Australia to accept inequality. We have been trained to think it's OK to have people living on our streets and long waiting lists for hospital treatments.

  16. Australia's tax system is flawed, creating a paradise for the ultra-wealthy while many struggle to afford basic necessities. We're in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis, but it's clear not everyone is feeling the squeeze. Recent research by the Australia Institute reveals the ultra-rich are thriving, thanks in part to a tax system that only deepens inequality. It's time to address this growing divide and find solutions.
