One of the things that "Atlas Shrugged" left me with is calling the aesthetics of Art Deco "Taggartian," after Dagny Taggart, the main character of the book. We regularly use it with my wife. Other than that, luckily, the book left me largely unscathed.

This theory assumes they were film-literate enough to have seen and understood The Producers, and is thus incompatible with the predominant theory that they simply did not understand enough to make a good movie based on #AynRand's already wild and unrealistic scifi fantasy plot.

A: The alt-right often sees science fiction as a prefiguration of the destiny that white men must realize. They have a very crude view of culture: it either moralizes or demoralizes white people. They’re therefore only interested in science fiction insofar as it either inspires them to greatness or stands in the way of their greatness. For all their sophistry, it’s a very crude way of thinking, one that precludes any kind of critical self-reflection or openness to the kinds of thought experiments that science fiction so often affords.
Q: How is fascism connected with historical science fiction fandom?
A: We tend to think of fascists as outside agitators who are not real fans, but they have been here since the earliest days of fandom. The first major Neo-Nazi leader in the US was James H. Madole (1927-1979), who got his start in the science fiction community. In his writings describing the National Renaissance Party’s philosophy, he often drew upon science fiction images of a scientifically advanced cognitive elite who would rule the world and ultimately transcend their humanity to become “homo superior.” Instead of thinking of science fiction as inherently progressive, we need to think of it as an ongoing struggle between competing ideological tendencies. The left seems to be winning this war within literary science fiction, at least, but it was a hard-fought battle carried out over many decades.

So many of us have long lists of books that we plan to read. I use an Amazon list for this purpose. Although I have put more than 500 titles on the list, I make a point of trying not to purchase any of them from Amazon.
As I've grown older, I've become aware that life is too short to waste on really bad books, so I have developed a list of books that are on others' "must read" lists but that I want to avoid at all costs. Number one on that list is the loathsome crank Ayn Rand's "masterpiece", "Atlas Shrugged".

Ayn Rand was a Russian-American novelist, screenwriter and playwright. She is the author of vast doorstop-sized tomes like Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead, among other thick, boring books espousing #libertarian themes and ideology. She empowered herself by trying to set the Women's movement back 50 years.
Rand claimed to be a philosopher, though she preferred the title "Objectivist." #Objectivism is a political movement based on Rand's teachings. In actual fact, her simplistic versions of philosophy were misunderstandings of #Aristotelian #metaphysical notions formulated thousands of years ago. Whether that makes it a philosophy ("Look, it's got an '-ism' at the end!") or just an excuse for being greedy, ignorant, and selfish is, ironically, subjective.
