This morning, @groswald alerted me to the fact that the subject of today's BTB is "our old pal Benny Shaps" and that reminded me of the period when @groswald was our housemate and sometimes I'd come home to him and @jdekg in the midst of a conversation where they'd both adopt the voice and persona of Ben Shapiro. Cherished memories.

#RobertEvans says so many profound things in this post on #USPolitics, #Fascism, and where we go from here to try to build a better world as the one we've known burns around us. It's achingly realistic, acknowledges the exhaustion so many of us feel, and yet also gives #hope:
"The larger solutions to our common woes, if they ever arrive, will be something new. Something we haven’t tried yet. I feel very confident they won’t take the form of another march or involve everyone finally agreeing to be the same kind of communist/anarchist/whatever. Shawn Fain, chief of the United Auto Workers Union, has called for a General Strike in 2028, and that so far is the only clear plan I’ve heard anyone make that feels like it has a ghost of a chance...half of why I support the idea is because it IS audacious...Shit can be different, but not unless we’re willing to try different shit."

I am finally listening to the #BehindTheBastards episode on the #Conservative #Porn #Book "Blue Dawn".
Maybe the best thing that could happen in the next 4 years is a #Movie being made of this modern classic. I guess it would star Kevin Sorbo and would surely take pride of place on any #Blockbuster shelf, right next to the 2011 classic #AtlasShrugged
If they made a movie of #BlueDawn, I'd absolutely seed it to 200% - or 48 hours, whichever came first.

I read an interesting (and upsetting!) article on this subject not that long ago and if you’d asked me before I listened to this episode of #BTB I would’ve sworn the harassment campaign against the Steiners happened circa 2007, not five(ish) years ago.
That’s at least partially my brain but I have to think it’s also pandemic time distortion.

I en episode av podkasten Behind the Bastards (12.10.2023) påpekte Robert Evans at på grunn av fascismens iboende irrasjonalitet, så er fascister notorisk dårlige på å gjøre gode risikoanalyser og sikkerhetsvurderinger. De har en tendens til å alltid feilberegne fiendens styrker og svakheter, og har en tendens til å både overvurdere og undervurdere trusler mot dem selv. Dette fikk meg til å tenke på Umberto Eco sitt essay Ur-Fascismen, hvor et av de mest minneverdige poengene er hvordan fascister har en tendens til å se på fienden som «samtidig for sterk og for svak». Noen ganger er fienden en allmektig jødebolsjevistisk sammensvergelse som styrer hele verden i all hemmelighet. Andre ganger, som med operasjon Barbarossa, er de så svake at i følge Hitler, trenger wermacht bare å sparke inn døren til Sovjetunionen for å få det hele råtne byggverket til å falle sammen. Som Umberto Eco påpeker så avhenger hvilket fiendebilde de har av den «retoriske konteksten».
Man kan kanskje tenke seg at disse gjensidig motstridende fiendebildene er bare noe fascistene bruker i propagandaen sin, men mye tyder på at denne motsetningen er bakt inn det fascistiske verdensbilde. At dette er et eksempel på Orwellsk dobbeltenkning; evnen til å ha to motstridene tanker i hodet samtidig, og helhjertet tro på at begge er sant. Det at de tapte andre verdenskrig, mye på grunn av deres ekstremt dårlige evner til å predikere risiko, er et bevis på at dette er tilfellet. Fascismens dyrkelse av vold, handling for handlingens skyld, deres avsmak for intellektualisme og rasjonalitet som noe veikt, feminint og jødisk; alt dette er eksempler på fascismens iboende irrasjonalitet. Antifascister bør legge merke til denne iboende svakheten i fascismens natur, fordi den fører i praksis til dårlig risikovurdering og dårlig operasjonssikkerhet fra deres side. Antifascister bør være klar over dette og utnytte denne svakheten ved alle anledninger.

I went from writing this to listening to @taylorlorenz talk to @adamconover on #Factually about #SocialMedia. I was a bit disappointed that they didn't use the opportunity to plug their #Mastodon accounts because talking about the alternatives is a big part of changing the internet landscape.
Then I went on to listen to #BehindTheBastards talk about #AaronSwartz. Of course #RSS comes up.

The recent #BehindTheBastards episode on the book Going Infinite and #SBF was great. I found it particularly hilarious that Athe author #MichaelLewis thought SBF was an extra special boy because he played #MagicTheGathering.
As a former Magic player I feel equipped to state that this is not the case. I do think it might have appealed to SBF because his parents seem to be the type to buy endless cards for him.

In 2005 former (or current according to himself) World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer was granted an Icelandic citizenship.
I was inspired by an episode of #BehindTheBastards about Fischer which explained much about his antisemitic views but left open the question why Icelanders wanted him after all that had gone before. This episode tries to answer that question.
