My big take home from the Anarchist Bookfair yesterday was that most anarchists who don’t teach in conventional schools see the word “teacher” and (perhaps rightly) think “cop” 😂 However there are many of us anarchist teachers out there trying to do better than the school system is built to allow and offer, often at great psychic cost, our students and colleagues glimpses of better alternatives to the current system from WITHIN the current system. Because, for the most part, that’s where the people are. It’s a constant daily battle and involves a lot of holding our noses and making compromises to balance our values with the antithetical demands of the job. But there are a lot of us out there trying to make a difference and struggling with the mental toll of it.
That’s what the book is about. And for those who are currently living it or who have lived it, it was a must-buy. https://www.earthislandbooks.com/product-page/anarchist-atheist-punk-rock-teacher-by-dan-mckee

I was in London yesterday, to see A Strange Loop, and watching that powerful reflection on the impact of religious-based homophobia (especially on the same day as London’s Pride festival!) reinforced the importance to me of ensuring Religious Education in UK schools doesn’t reproduce religious bigotry, and that it actively challenges harmful religious narratives of exclusion that can make our LGBTQ+ students feel victimised and attacked in the supposedly safe-space of the classroom rather than amplify them. I speak about some of the ways I’ve tried to challenge religious homo/trans/bi phobia in my own RE teaching in my book, Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher ( https://www.earthislandbooks.com/product-page/anarchist-atheist-punk-rock-teacher-by-dan-mckee ) and recommend it as reading for any current RE/RS teacher.

I really can’t wait for you to all read my new book - Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher: A Memoir of Struggle, Grief, Philosophy and Hope. Insights from over a decade of teaching Philosophy and Religious Studies in English schools and how anarchism, atheism, and a background in DIY punk (plus a love of wrestling, stand up and improv comedy, and philosophy) has informed my approach to the classroom and made me the person I am today. Inside stories from teaching during a pandemic, coping with the loss of both my parents, struggling with my mental health, and a first hand account of being one of the 1 in 3 teachers who want to quit the profession…and how I learned to love the classroom again. It’s out June 16th on Earth Island Books and you can pre-order it everywhere now.

Out June 16th on Earth Island Books, as the blurb says: it’s a memoir exploring the various ways in which anarchist philosophy, atheism, and a background in DIY punk rock influenced one conflicted teacher's approach to the classroom over twelve turbulent and thought-provoking years.
‘Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher' is more than just a memoir of some teacher you've never met. It is philosophy of education, of anarchism, of authenticity, and of life. Throw in some personal history, the deaths of both of his parents to deal with on top of juggling all the professional absurdities that come with the job (not to mention having to teach through a global pandemic), and you have all the earmarks of a biographical classic.
Sharing frontline insights which help explain why currently one in three teachers in England plan on quitting the profession, and the first-hand experience of being one of those very statistics, this memoir of struggle, grief, philosophy and hope tells a story of why, despite all its endless frustrations and inherent contradictions, there still might be no better job in the world than being an 'Anarchist Atheist Punk Rock Teacher'.
