Along the same lines, I also hung a print of Vin from #Mistborn (character from the #Cosmere universe of Brandon #Sanderson). Love the print, even though it is a tad dark and hard to make out without direct light. But I guess that is just appropriate for the character anyway 🤷♂️.

"I will protect myself, so that I may continue to protect others." This finishes the healing process that the fourth ideal began. It recognizes that you cannot help others if you yourself are drowning. It is the magic equivalent of "put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others".
The oaths for Skybreakers follow a similar progression. And while we have not seen the greater oaths for other orders, I expect they do as well.

The fourth ideal is even harder, but requires you to resolve this tension. "I accept there are those I cannot protect."
I'm sure you can see why that would be a hard oath to swear. If your life is defined by protecting others, it can feel contradictory. As an ancient Radiant put it, "I simply don't think that I can. Am I not supposed to want to help people?"
In swearing this oath, you relieve yourself of some guilt. You remove the worry that failing an individual will result in breaking your oaths. And importantly, you reduce the risk that you will break before you can help the next person.
This leads perfectly into the final oath...

I love how in the #StormlightArchives, the oaths of each order begin as restrictions on behavior, then shift into being about healing. Let's use the Windrunners as an example.
We start with the first ideal, which is standard for everyone. "Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination."
The second ideal is a much clearer restriction. "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves." It is further restricting you, because if you kill without good cause or betray someone, or even have contradicting oaths, you will lose your bond.
The third ideal is even more stringent. It comes with variations, but the core is "I will protect even those I hate". This ideal is hard. It breaks us vs them thinking. If you must protect those you hate, you can't always justify fighting, even if you are doing so to protect. It puts you in constant tension with yourself.

I spent all of Monday and Tuesday of this week at a Brandon Sanderson Book Convention here in Salt Lake City called Dragonsteel. I’ve read every Sanderson book (& live 4 blocks away), so I had to go. 😂
It was a fun, nerdy con that reminded me of some of the first anime conventions I went to in the 90s.

#TheStormlightArchives is deeply personal to me. Kaladin's story struggling with anxiety and depression has helped me in understanding my own anxiety and depression.
I find it amazing that Sanderson can capture how people are affected by their mental health despite never suffering from any kind of mental health disorder.
I enjoy the worldbuilding of the #Cosmere but I think what makes it work is that it serves the story, not the other way around.
I eagerly await the release of each book.

📖 #NowReading: The Alloys of Law by Brandon Sanderson.
I read the first #Mistborn trilogy last summer and it was a great read! Brandon Sanderson is an incredible world builder, so it’s so interesting to see how he took the seeds he planted in that first trilogy into this new trilogy. Things like naming towns after old characters, springing religions out of character actions, and more. It’s always a great read!
