  1. @mms
Couple thoughts: 1. He's from a different era when books did their thing then stopped.

In general, in the 80s books got above 200 pages, and now books are just silly long

So I think the pacing you've seen is typical for him

    2. He liked writing by thinking of a situation, a secret fact about a character that he would never reveal, then going from there, building the story in a "pants-er" way

    So maybe you don't click

I would suggest trying "A Night in the Lonesome October", the best of his late books, if you want you try one more time

  2. ok, please send help. Roger Zelazny. Are we incompatible?

I've read Amber Chronicles and am finishing Devlisih today.

On one side I love his ideas. On ideas presented alone, all those are amazing.

But he doesn't develop any of those. Cool things happen, but why? There is a back story, but all Roger does is to give a single sentence (if he's in the mood). Characters are great, but miss one random sentence and whole aspect is lost.

As it stands, all those books are much to fast for me. Just one action piece after another.

Are those books like this or is all of Zelaznys works like this?

    -- TIL ---

Devlisih is a collection of short stories masquerade as a novel. This explains so freaking much.

  3. Oooooh!!! Remember, tomorrow you can start 1 chapter per day of "A night in the Lonesome October", by Zelazny. Each day in the life of guard dog Snuff, through each day of Oct. While unbalanced (1 chapter is a sentence, I think, and another quite long), it is still fun to do).

  5. "... this John Betancourt fellow who has purchased the rights to write Amber novels, and that he plans on releasing a prequel trilogy set in the Amber universe, and I wanted to know if you, as a friend and fan of Mr. Zelazny, have any thoughts on the matter you'd be willing to share.

Well, I remember Roger talking to me and Steve Brust. We'd just suggested that if he did an anthology of other-people-write-Amber-stories that we'd be up for it (understatement), and he puffed on his pipe, and said -- extremely firmly -- that he didn't want anyone else to write Amber stories but him."

Ah. I had been wondering. Trying to be polite here, but Roger is dead now. Sorry to hear about that ...

If you can shadow-walk from Amber to the Courts of Chaos then you probably already made the movie and we would like to see it too please

  7. Today on our podcast Re-Creative Mark A. Rayner and I talk to author Peter Darbyshire, who joined us to champion the classic Roger Zelazny fantasy series The Chronicles of Amber. I've loved Zelazny's fiction from the moment I first encountered the Amber series, and Mark's a fan as well, so Peter was in good company.

  15. The Road to Amber, by Roger Zelazny; and the story behind “Manna from Heaven”
It's a thoroughly satisfactory capstone to the five volumes that went before.

Huge Zelazny fan that I am, I must record that I had read all of the stories before. But! the Hugo-winning "24 Views of Mt. Fuji, by Hokusai" is in fact illustrated by the relevant woodcuts.

  18. It's October 1st, so here is my annual reminder that it's time to start reading Roger Zelazny's "A Night In The Lonesome October" -- remember, each chapter is a day, so only read one chapter per day until the finale on the 31st! #Zelazny #Reading #October #Fantasy #Spooky #Humor

  19. Am doing my periodic re-read of Amber (Zelazny and Pratchett are literally the only authors I ever re-read), and realized that Amber is to me what LotR is to a good chunk of other SF/F fans.

  20. @jdnicoll I read “The Guns of Avalon” when it came out, didn’t like it because I didn’t know it was #2 of a series, and forgot all about it. A year or so later, I read “Nine Princes in Amber”. Corwin and I recovered our memories together, which was really cool. #Zelazny

  21. Latest read, Tower of Ice (1981) by Roger Zelazny, from Flashing Swords 5; Dilvish the Damned, demonic hero in half-elven form, and his talking demon steed Black, seek the evil wizard Jelerak in the Tower of Ice.
Zelazny once said he didn't like his Dilvish stories-- but sometimes writers want to prove themselves, have literary aspirations, and forget that pure entertainment is a gift to readers as well.

  22. CW: Old sci-fi book review: Damnation alley

"Damnation Alley" by Roger Zelazny is a post-apocalyptic book.
The plot is simple enough - a few decades after nuclear WW III, a criminal motorcycle gang member from LA, named Hell Tanner, is offered full pardon for his crimes if he is willing to deliver essential medicine to plagued Boston via "Damnation Alley": the least dangerous route.

  23. @Dr_Bombay Much joy! I just stumbled across ‘The further Chronicles of Amber’ aka ‘The Merlin Cycle’ which (revealing my Vintage) were not yet published last time I read these. Oh, the anticipation!

  24. I started re-reading the ‘Chronicles of Amber’ by Roger Zelazny a while back, prompted by a post by @Dr_Bombay (many thanks for the prompt, Dr B, I struggled to find it again).

After at least 35 years, I had forgotten how good they are. A completely unique #fantasy novel series. Very fast-paced, and yet poetic at times, steering a writing style somewhere between Raymond Chandler and Lord Byron. I’d highly commend giving them a look en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chro

  26. I love colorful #dice as much as anyone, and I usually try to find interesting #GameMechanics to utilize them. But I do enjoy #AmberDiceless role-playing , by #Wujcik , based on #Zelazny and the #ChroniclesOfAmber , and am considering a #Foundry game once a month or so.
