Today I received the Bridge Four pendant from Badali, and added it to my chain to hang with my wife's Aon Omi pendant.

Last night, I finished what is probably a nearly-final draft of my reference art for my first tattoo, also themed after the Cosmere.

Feeling better than I would have expected to by now... but I'm glad I do. Still much healing and growth ahead, but I'm in a good place, and able to do what my wife told me many times that she wanted: To keep going, and not let her death destroy me. I dunno about the part where she wanted me to find someone else. I'll probably just let that happen naturally if at all. I'm comfortable being a loner, at least for now.

The fourth ideal is even harder, but requires you to resolve this tension. "I accept there are those I cannot protect."

I'm sure you can see why that would be a hard oath to swear. If your life is defined by protecting others, it can feel contradictory. As an ancient Radiant put it, "I simply don't think that I can. Am I not supposed to want to help people?"

In swearing this oath, you relieve yourself of some guilt. You remove the worry that failing an individual will result in breaking your oaths. And importantly, you reduce the risk that you will break before you can help the next person.

This leads perfectly into the final oath...

I love how in the #StormlightArchives, the oaths of each order begin as restrictions on behavior, then shift into being about healing. Let's use the Windrunners as an example.

We start with the first ideal, which is standard for everyone. "Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination."

The second ideal is a much clearer restriction. "I will protect those who cannot protect themselves." It is further restricting you, because if you kill without good cause or betray someone, or even have contradicting oaths, you will lose your bond.

The third ideal is even more stringent. It comes with variations, but the core is "I will protect even those I hate". This ideal is hard. It breaks us vs them thinking. If you must protect those you hate, you can't always justify fighting, even if you are doing so to protect. It puts you in constant tension with yourself.

Ich bin absolut geflashed von den #Sturmlichtchroniken von Brandon #Sanderson. Die Bücher sind richtige Brecher und nicht unbedingt das, was ich als einfach zugänglich beschreiben wollte.

Aber ansonsten ist es mMn wahrscheinlich unübertrieben die beste Fantasyreihe der letzten 20 Jahre.

Dazu kommt die unsägliche Praxis deutscher Verlage, die Bände zu spliten. Zum Glück sind die Bücher in allen Formaten in meiner Bib/#onleihe vorhanden.

Meine persönlichen Pluspunkte:

- komplett neue Welt, mit Flora, Fauna und daran angepasste Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft (keine Standard Mittelalter-Fantasy)
- einzigartiges rätselhaftes Magiesystem, was nur scheibchenweise offenbart wird
- komplexe Charaktere und starke weibliche Hauptrollen
- Spannungsbogen (#Sanderlanche) in Perfektion

Some friends and I were talking about if #Szeth were charged with a magic talking rat (rat-nimi?) instead of a talking sword in #StormlightArchives. Rats are good at being people in the ways he is bad at being a person; maybe he'd learn something.

@DevWouter live coding is a good one that I should probably add.

If you're a fan of fantasy series that span way too many pages but still, somehow, keep you hooked, you should definitely check out the Stormlight Archive series by Brandon Sanderson. Great read!

I'm hoping beyond hope that there are enough people in the venn intersection who like both programming and scrolling through the #StormlightArchives hashtag.
