  6. "The overall Eastern European carbon sink shows a declining trend [due to] a saturation effect of the regrowth in abandoned former agricultural areas, combined with an increase in wood harvest, particularly in European Russia, as well as more frequent climate-induced forest disturbances such as droughts."

  9. This map of land use (and the origin of food imports) while intended to give a picture of the UK's food system is also of more general interest for debates about land-use (and access) in the UK... most especially what is suggests is that the UK remains a country dominated by farmland, whatever our perceptions are.

How this then refracts into debates about land for housing and access rights for those seeking rural pursuits is another matter.

  12. CW: Some notes about land-use

    @MrLee

When talking about land-use, it is, however, important to understand that land is not something that is used and then thrown away (ok, there are some heavily destructive uses, e.g. mining).

Land provides multiple services (biodiversity, carbon storage, water cycling, recreation, agricultural production, space for building stuff...). Some land-uses reduce the capacity of land to provide these services.
The next issue is the order in which the services are priorized. Some services have a more or less evident price tag (agricultural production, or space for buildings), while other (ecosystem) services, like water purification, carbon storage or biodiversity, are usually not taken into account by the market, except by really motivated people(TM) or administrations treating these services as public goods that deserve protection.

So, to make a fair comparison, it is important to assess the capacity of the different land-uses to provide the land-related services. And here it gets somewhat messy because management comes into play. E.g. 'agriculture' can be an conventional, pesticide-based soil degrading extractive system with all the consequences for soil, water and biodiversity; however, you can also have an agroforestry system that provides its functions in the interest of society and nature.

And here comes into play that e.g. pastures, despite taking up a lot of land, can be quite well-managed and score high on ecosystem services (of course, capitalism promotes the opposite: land degradation an unnecessary suffering*).
Just wanted to provide this context to the great map.

    * of ccourse, reducing meat intake is a goal the whole society should work towards.

  15. This is the sighting map for Lasius emarginatus. It's become rather famous in NYC, and I've observed it many times this spring. Based on the articles I've read, Lasius emarginatus is not found in cities in Europe and tends to live in trees in the forest? Is this true? Have any of ya'll over there seen this ant?

Also, I'm not buying that this ant hasn't made it to any other US cities. I will explain how to spot it and identify it.

  16. At first they ran, but they they had to capture and kill both of the foragers who stumbled on their tiny home.

In the Bronx we still don't have many Lasius emarginatus so the pavement is ruled by Tetramorium immigrans who have all started staking out the best locations.

I was happy to see that the Camponotus castaneus colony in the park survived the winter. I will bring them some feeder crickets. They are my favorite.

  17. We think of Lasius ants (fuzzy garden ants) as small but this Lasius emarginatus (the ManhatANT) worker has either killed or foraged a much larger black ant and is scaling a vertical wall to take it back to her nest. Urban ants are often more attracted to protein than sweets. They are the largest lasius workers I’ve ever seen.

  18. There is a Lasius emarginatus colony right by the front door of my school that I've been watching for about 4 years. They enjoy the garden of one of the houses next-door to our school. Every winter I wonder if they are gone forever, but every spring they emerge again from the same tiny hole.

They like to have a single entrance to their colony just like Lasius neoniger.

I wonder how they found their colonies? When do they fly? This should be a fun summer!

  19. I love how this queen Lasius arizonicus ant is smooth like glass. She’s a social parasite who , after dropping her wings, sneaks into existing ant colonies, kills the resident queen, and takes over.

    So much drama. #Lasius #Ants #Insects

  20. _Lasius_ nuptial flight day!!! _L. neoniger_, I'm pretty sure. These are some of the most common ants I see, but I'd never seen a nuptial flight till now.

I found an alate the moment after she detached her wings!

  21. @StrepsipZerg

I have several very big colonies of black garden ant (Lasius niger) in my small garden, where they — much to my dismay — are undermining tiled areas.

Now I am wondering: What are the ants doing during the winter? Do they sleep? Or do they just stay indoors and feast on stored food? Or do most of the worker ants die so that a colony starts almost from scratch come springtime?
