  1. My friend, Jane, from Lake Cowichan, was the first senior citizen activist who was arrested in 2021, at Fairy Creek Blockades. She messaged before heading out to meet up with me at HQ camp. She told me she's never been arrested for protesting anything before but due to seeing too much ecocide still happening in her golden years - declared, 'Getting arrested for protecting Mother Nature is now on my bucket list"🌲💦 💗🦅🌲🦉🌲 Jane stayed at HQ camp for 2 nights & on her 3rd day, headed out to chain herself/walker to a tripod hardblock. Jane was arrested, along with 12 others that day, after several hours. Jane is a wonderful human being, a musician, a fibers artist, a Mother & Grandmother, who loves nature very much.

  2. #Nature has so far balanced our abuse. This is coming to an end,” - #JohanRockström, director of the Potsdam Institute for #ClimateImpact Research.

#Trees and #land absorbed almost no #CO2 last year. Is nature’s #CarbonSink failing?

The sudden collapse of carbon sinks was not factored into #ClimateModels – and could rapidly accelerate #GlobalHeating

by Patrick Greenfield, October 14, 2024

"It begins each day at nightfall. As the light disappears, billions of #zooplankton, #crustaceans and other marine organisms rise to the ocean surface to feed on microscopic #algae, returning to the depths at sunrise. The waste from this frenzy – Earth’s largest migration of creatures – sinks to the #ocean floor, removing millions of tonnes of #carbon from the atmosphere each year.

"This activity is one of thousands of natural processes that regulate the Earth’s climate. Together, the planet’s oceans, forests, soils and other natural carbon sinks absorb about half of all #HumanEmissions.

"But as the Earth heats up, scientists are increasingly concerned that those crucial processes are breaking down.

"In 2023, the hottest year ever recorded, preliminary findings by an international team of researchers show the amount of carbon absorbed by land has temporarily collapsed. The final result was that #forest, plants and soil – as a net category – absorbed almost no carbon.

"There are warning signs at sea, too. #Greenland’s Glaciers and #ArcticIceSheets are melting faster than expected, which is disrupting the #GulfStream ocean current and slows the rate at which oceans absorb carbon. For the algae-eating zooplankton, melting sea ice is exposing them to more sunlight – a shift scientists say could keep them in the depths for longer, disrupting the vertical migration that stores carbon on the ocean floor."

  3. #NatureRestorationLawEU [snd]

    Is it not strange...
that in the Dutch media the law is generally called "The NatureLaw"
and in the international (Eng Language) media is called by the actual name: "The Nature Restoration Law" ?
I suppose it has to do with Dutch framing by said media and politics. Given the recent conflict between 'Nature' vs 'Nitrogen' which has the country in virtual lockdown. (Housing, Roads and more prohibited because cattle farmers won't change their evil ways in a overcrowded country)

The law was PASSED yesterday, all be it by the skin of it's teeth, by the European Parlaiment and is now law in the European Union.

Some may (justifiably) say the law has been watered down to the bare minimum. They might be right in a to little too late kind of way.

But I like to see it in a non-defeatist kind of way:
It still is a MASSIVE WIN in providing #Nature and #Climate with a strong #LegalBase !

It promotes Nature as a #CarbonSink, combats #SoilDegradation and #SoilExploitation by #BigFarming, promotes #Diversity, it forces BigFarming to think of a better way of producing (change ! and of course BigFarming demand EU support as is their addiction).

In other words... this law forces a negotiation on the premise of nature, where BigFarming was used to get their way (and huge subsidies).
Farm Land -> Grazing Land -> Barren Land. Look for examples in Spain, Greece and Africa.
