@Swede1952 Yeah. I find that the crows near me tend to look more confused than alarmed when the mockingbirds start divebombing them (not that I actually know what goes through their fine feathery heads, of course). The mockingbirds have to be really persistent! Usually the crows stick around for what they came for at the feeder; they just don't linger like they otherwise might.
I primarily put the food out for the #crows; all the other birds are a fun bonus. The #mockingbirds are helpful in letting me know when to come to the window to watch, because I hear their alarm calls even when the crows are silent. I love how the birds teach me things by watching them.

@Swede1952 These are some of my favorite outdoor neighbors! It's fun to watch them mob the #crows, even though I love the crows every bit as much. #Mockingbirds have chutzpah! And they're such good company in the wee hours. I can be up at 3am and wishing I wasn't, feeling tired and dragged out - and then I hear a mockingbird singing outside and I am reminded that the world is still a beautiful place, and life is a wondrous thing. And suddenly the wonder I feel is bigger and more important than the exhaustion.

@Soldusty I keep meaning to figure out how making that ask works, and I have some of the same concerns...but I'm assuming no one's gonna mind if the alt text they suggest gets edited/expanded/whatever? I mean, just having a rough outline to clean up would still be an easier lift for me (I think?) than starting from scratch. Just having someone else transcribe all the text so I can just add in some notes about the details would be super helpful.
...So there's also this other thing going on with me: it's really hard to #AskForHelp. It feels like asking someone else to do my work for me. It feels like making a burden of myself...and I already have to work really hard at rejecting the idea that my disabilities make me burdensome. There's a nasty voice in my head that says if I have to ask for help, I'm just proving the point.
This, of course, is garbage. It turns out that being able to ask for help is essential to being a healthy human, and the fact that this is so hard is part of why I'm not. But ohh, all the bootstrapping suck-it-up-and-do-it-yourself programming I got even before I had the gall to be disabled on top of it all (hard eyeroll here)...it's a big tangled mess.
And obviously, untangling these messes is the necessary stuff of being a human who wants to do better, be better. Like everyone else, I have to own my issues and figure out how to work through them. I'm just sayin'...it's amazing how complicated and difficult this all gets, and how fast.

Happy #MothersDay. It's a day of celebration for some, and a day of difficult & often complicated feelings for others, so be gentle with yourselves & each other.

It's one of the most raw, vulnerable, and honest things I've ever written. Four years later, I still think it's well worth reading - especially if you have a difficult or abusive relationship with a parent or family member.
I have a much happier story to tell now than I did when I wrote this post, but it marks an important beginning. I feel so much wonder, to reread this and note how differently I feel about my #family now. There's a lot of pain between us that's hard to heal. But what I've learned is that, at least sometimes, even the people you know well will surprise you. Somehow, even with #dementia, my relationship with my #Mom is the best it's ever been. It's a gift I'd long since given up hoping for, and yet here we are. I'm grateful for this and for her - and also deeply mindful of what it felt like before this unexpected change in our relationship. So often, in so many parental relationships, that positive change never comes - and that is hard, hard, hard. So if this is you, I'm sending you extra love today.

OMG OMG OMG holy crap THE CROWS ACTUALLY CAME!
I usually only share really rough comics & WIPs with patrons, but I'm sharing this one with all of you because I'm so freaking excited I can't contain myself — or pry myself away from my perch behind the screen door.
I've been wanting to try making friends with the local crows for years now. I had this very conversation with one of my partners a few weeks ago, and having been called out for my inaction, I started putting food out for them now and then. But last week I started putting peanuts out for them more reliably, and practicing my crow calls to pique their curiosity. And holy freaking crap — once I started calling to them, THEY CAME.

I still haven't found my stolen sketchbook journal dumped anywhere and so far as I know, no one else has either, so probably it's gone forever. That's hard. I have a crap memory. It's like 5 months of my life are just - gone. And yet, the outpouring of kindness from strangers has been an unexpected gift, and I am deeply grateful for it. It's hard to express how deeply I feel that, really, but - the other day I was thinking about this, and also thinking about how important it is to spend more time looking forward and less time looking back. And it suddenly occurred to me: maybe what I've gained is more valuable than what I've lost.
