Friday marked my first Mexican Mother's Day celebration as a mom, a particularly special one as a transgender mother. The recognition from my own mother was deeply affirming. Yet, amidst the celebration, I faced a major setback: I was laid off from the job I've held for two years.
Saturday brought a heavy silence—depression crept in, shadowing the joy of the previous day. The dark thoughts returned, a stark contrast to Friday's light.
But Sunday, we celebrated Mother's Day here in the U.S., surrounded by our chosen family. Receiving my first flowers as a trans woman lifted my spirits tremendously—it was another moment of gender affirmation, filled with laughter, joy, and delicious food.
Come Monday, the emotional rollercoaster continued. Depression knocked on my door again, but amidst the turbulence, I found the strength to start my job search and apply for unemployment benefits. As I cherish the last week with my mom before she returns to Mexico, I'm focusing on the warmth and love of now, rather than the looming goodbye.
Life's blend of bitter and sweet reminds us of our resilience. Through ups and downs, we keep moving forward, anchored by love and acceptance from those who matter most. 🌸

It's one of the most raw, vulnerable, and honest things I've ever written. Four years later, I still think it's well worth reading - especially if you have a difficult or abusive relationship with a parent or family member.
I have a much happier story to tell now than I did when I wrote this post, but it marks an important beginning. I feel so much wonder, to reread this and note how differently I feel about my #family now. There's a lot of pain between us that's hard to heal. But what I've learned is that, at least sometimes, even the people you know well will surprise you. Somehow, even with #dementia, my relationship with my #Mom is the best it's ever been. It's a gift I'd long since given up hoping for, and yet here we are. I'm grateful for this and for her - and also deeply mindful of what it felt like before this unexpected change in our relationship. So often, in so many parental relationships, that positive change never comes - and that is hard, hard, hard. So if this is you, I'm sending you extra love today.
