TITLE: Opinion: Could long-term AI use lead to isolation? We need to find out — but researchers need better access to data

    URL: statnews.com/2026/10/26/cumula

OpenAI recently announced that it is tracking signs of user distress across sessions, rather than only within them, and using that information to inform model responses. The announcement follows a wave of new safeguards for mental health and well-being conversations with artificial intelligence at OpenAI and elsewhere, such as parental controls for teens, usage limits and break reminders, and crisis detection and referral. Policymakers have also moved to address associated risks, with a dozen states now requiring companion chatbot operators to disclose to users that their tools are not human, and to institute crisis referral procedures.

This attention, within AI companies and legislatures, is important and urgent. But it is directed almost entirely at acute harm from interacting with AI, rather than the cumulative harm that develops over time, such as the gradual replacement of one’s connections with friends and family by AI interaction.

  3. I know the use of LLMs are controversial, but I wanted a mod for Tears of the Kingdom so running would not deplete stamina.

I could find the mod for a lower version of the game. ChatGPT was able to inspect my files and update the mod for the latest version of the game. It took less than 5 minutes.

I'm constantly shocked at what LLMs are able to do these days.

Tbh I find diversity focused activities the peak of cringe, but until we are more than 10% of a sector that we all depend on for our digital sovereignty, it remains necessary. Thanks to the @fsfe for organizing this workshop.

  5. Antonino X The Motels – Suddenly Last Summer (Bitty Summer Beats Mix) MUSIC DOWNLOAD

Found Objects celebrates the return of the remix and the art of sampling (as in found audio).

Australian audio artist and Cream magazine editor Antonino Tati trawls the internet to find cool soundbytes that he then layers over alternative mixes of great songs.

The Ultimate Eurythmics Archives calls it “a series of imaginative audio collages that feel part remix, part radio drama, and part pop culture time capsule,” while the series has also been acknowledged by the David Bowie fan site maggioreonbowie.com and other music sites.

Each day a new track is added, building up to a compilation of songs that go beyond the normal parameters of music mixing.

And each track is an awesome head trip. Good to show off on the playlist. The music featured is varied, with Volume 02 containing mixes of songs by Soulwax, Kate Bush, David Bowie, R.E.M., Tori Amos, Air, Lily Allen, Taylor Swift, Malcolm McLaren, and more.

Today’s addition is a classic from The Motels, Suddenly Last Summer. The song was actually inspired by the film of the same name, which starred Elizabeth Taylor in a holiday romance/drama. So naturally elements of the film have gone into this new version – dialogue from Taylor herself, along with over-the-top trailers for the movie.

Slip on a pair of earbuds or ‘phones and be transported into worlds of aural delight and mad sonic adventure. A musical universe where cool beats are paired with vintage educational fodder, insane radio ads of the 1950s, and classic film quotes.

  8. The Change by Kirsten Miller

I think I discovered this book because of the Book Cougars. I watch so many YouTube book reviewers though that I am not sure.

The Change is about three women who find the body of a young girl stashed in a garbage bag and thrown over the side of a rode. They discover that she is one of several missing girls.

The main characters are Nessa James, a widow with twin daughters, Harriet Osborne a woman whose career and marriage was destroyed at the same time, and Jo Levison a woman who owns a fitness center designed to give women back their strength in more ways than one. Jo is happily married and has a young daughter.

Nessa has a special ability to speak with the dead. When they discover the first body, she becomes aware of more.

The women take it upon themselves to investigate and give closure to all the families. They quickly realize the deaths are connected to a gated community not too far from where the bodies were disposed of.

This story gave me vibes of the Epstein files. It’s about those with wealth who think their needs are more important than life itself. The copyright is 2022 so that may have sparked an idea.

I don’t usually read fantasy, but this one felt more like a mystery. The more I read, I realize how the boundaries of genre seem to sometimes be harder to define. This one does have a little paranormal storyline because of Nessa’s special ability, Harriet likes to work with plants, and Jo finds her strength in an odd way.

I picked this one up to read now because we were moving into the spooky time and it had witchy vibes.

I had a friend who reviewed it on Goodreads and was disappointed in the book because of some of the violence. I get that but I also think that reading it now having watched how our current administration is refusing to investigate the Epstein files and punish those who are guilty, it makes a little more sense to me. I understood the need for the violence to clear out the evil that had saturated the community.

It is a story about how one person can make a difference and how three women made a change.

It is well written. I enjoyed it and would look more from this author in the future.

This book is a commitment at 470 pages in hardcover and counts toward my unending books on my shelf to read. I like books at 300 pages or less, but this one seemed like a fast read.

I had a couple of bookish adventures this past week. Both were at Beaverdale Books, a local indie bookstore. The first was an author event with D. M. Pulley. She was promoting her book Stone Mad. She is an architect and has a love for old buildings. She finds buildings with a reputation for being haunted along with a possible real-life crime and creates a mystery. I purchased her newest release Stone Mad and can’t wait to read it. I will be reading her backlist as well.

My second bookish adventure was also at Beaverdale Books. Four authors from my Sister’s in Crime chapter came to play a game with the readers. It was interactive. We helped choose the main character, setting, motive, weapon, and a few other tools in the making of a mystery. We helped show the readers what it is like to develop a mystery as it is written. It was fun and there were treats.

Let me know if you have a good book I need to read.

    Happy Reading!

  12. “Entering detachedly, observing a person, you can sometimes so travel down the filament that you might wake up to find yourself walking off inside them, become them, so much by sympathy, yourself forgotten, and seeing the world from where they stand. Or looking more personally you catch the gleams of response to you and break into flower, building the arches of which our human life is made. A gleam from them gives you a foothold, one from you gives them more root, till the branches can grow and each stands, a tree, in the other’s atmosphere. This between you is an arch, by which each is drawn out upright; beneath which the heavenly bird flies, whose roost is not on this sphere.

“Held in your hand a person may blossom, break open and become transfigured. If everyone knew how ravishing they were the street would be blind with light.”

  27. that dirt road in New Hampshire doesn't even have Street View; my other, equally late grandparents' house near Boston does, but I had to walk up and down the street view several times to even find it, because some jackass cut down the trees, tore out the gardens and added a cheap-looking absurdly large garage that is bigger than the entire actual four-bedroom house

and the current owners have put up a big angry sign complaining that they're suing the town because the property evaluator didn't disclose that this cheap, shoddy garage is a huge fucking fire hazard 🔥

  28. Did a bit of family tech support this morning; I swear this usually comes down to one of three things:

    - knowing how to line up error message text with search text so I can find documentation

    - slowing down and reading *everything* on the screen for context and/or finding the right place to fix stuff

    - leaning on a few decades of experience in understanding how things in computers tend to be organized, so your guess are correct around where the thing you need to fix is

None of this is magic; and I suspect a lot of it could be alleviated by:

    - including links to documentation along with error messages. It ain’t 1994 anymore

    - better systems to make sure error message text is used consistently throughout a product, including its support documentation; better still including unique error codes

    - search facilities to find particular settings rather than forcing someone to navigate tabs, panels, and dialogs
