On Tuesday the Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin once again hosted the Nu'uana Valley Interfaith Thanksgiving service. Members of many different religious traditions gathered in the temple's hondo to give thanks, offer hymns, and support one another.

@jayarava @BuddhismNow Surely this is partially a product of searching for #Buddhism (rather than, say, #佛教) in an English-based forum, given that 60% of native speakers are American (and they're disproportionately online). So it's not that "most Buddhists only think in terms of religious slogans," but that potentially most Buddhists on Anglophone social media trend this way. Put another way, you may be right that Americans took over #Buddhism, but not that they took over Buddhism.

Lion's Roar once again commits Pure Land Erasure. Their new Death, Love & Wisdom Summit has 16 teachers, none of whom are Pure Land (which is larger than the Zen, Tibetan Buddhism, or Theravada/Mindfulness traditions, which have many reps). As a not unrelated fact, only 1 of the 16 teachers is from a historically Buddhist Asian heritage. None of the 17 promo partners are Pure Land or majority Asian American (despite Asian Americans making up 75% of US Buddhism). #buddhism #buddhist #lionsroar

The fundamental insight of Pure Land Buddhism is that it's our material and social conditions that hold people back from awakening. Thus Amida Buddha's method for fast-tracking universal liberation was to create a situation that lacks all poverty, injustice, and environmental pollution, thus allowing everyone to swiftly attain buddhahood. The implications of this for how we should organize our own social structures are obvious.

On Thursday, November 27 (6:30pm) the Toronto Buddhist Church (1011 Sheppard Avenue W) will hold another soup-packing event. This is to create ready-mix soup bowls with rice, lentils and seasonings for the less fortunate. Like an assembly line, they add individual ingredients to create a nourishing, hearty soup. It's a fun filled group activity serving a great need! They provide all ingredients, so just come to help pack.

Praying for their captor: April 14, 1945, five Japanese American monks pray for the deceased President FDR at the Minidoka concentration camp in Hunt, Idaho. They were imprisoned, along with 120,000 other legal residents and citizens, for more than 3 years due to FDR's Executive Order 9066.
