De redactie van het Boeddhistisch Dagblad is geïnteresseerd in de ervaringen van mensen die het boeddhistisch pad volgen. De leer bestuderen en praktiseren. Al of niet op een kussen of in een sangha of in je eentje. Ben je zo’n iemand en wil je je ervaringen delen- hoe je het boeddhisme hebt ontdekt, wat het je opbracht en niet, je teleurstellingen en hoop, je verwachting, welke richting je volgt en waarom, of als je het boeddhisme weer hebt verlaten- stuur ons jouw ervaringen in een niet zo’n heel lange tekst toe om in de serie Boeddhistische doeners en denkers gepubliceerd te worden.‘Ik groeide op met de boodschap de arbeidersklasse te ontstijgen. Mijn moeder was een intelligente en krachtige vrouw, maar door oorlog en een harde jeugd beschadigd. Zelf kwam ze daarom niet zo ver als ze wilde. Als kind groeide ik met deze teleurstelling op, en met de boodschap het beter te doen. Mijn vader was een dromer. Een man die grootsheid vond in kleine dingen, al zag hij als zeeman ook de hele wereld. Liefde had hij als kind niet gekend. Niet welke hij nodig had in ieder geval. Op 30 Augustus 1973 werd ik als hun dochter geboren. Ik heb van beide iets. Maar de invloed van mijn moeder voelde ik het sterkst, ook omdat zij jong overleed. Op 28-jarige leeftijd gaf ik daarom al leiding aan een organisatie van zo’n 50 mensen. Ik verdiende veel geld, had een mooi huis en deed alles waarvan mijn moeder mij had verteld dat het goed was.
Maar gelukkig was ik niet.
Toen ik mijn zoon kreeg, belandde ik in een postnatale depressie. Ik was mijzelf kwijt. Ik deed alles wat mij was opgedragen, maar geluk was er niet te vinden. Ik was onrustig en onzeker. En ja, dan ga je zoeken. Ook binnen religie. Ik las de boeken van alle grote tradities. Maar niets resoneerde. Totdat ik het Tibetaans boek van leven en sterven van Sogyal Rinpoche las, en ik wist dat ik thuis was.
De verliefdheidsfase van het boeddhistisch pad volgde. Ik nam deel aan cursussen bij Rigpa en studeerde en mediteerde elke dag. Vrienden dachten dat ik een ‘beetje gek’ was geworden. Ik spreek nu over 2004, inmiddels is meditatie veel gebruikelijker. Maar niets kon mij stoppen. Ik had mijn basis gevonden en de oplossing voor elk probleem.
Rond 2010 stapte ik over naar Shambhala. Deze organisatie heeft een centrum in Rotterdam (waar ik destijds woonde) en daarnaast sloot het beter aan bij het westers denken. Zij hebben ook een pad, waarin je je in niveaus kunt ontwikkelen. Dit pad heb ik een periode gevolgd. In 2012 nam ik officieel toevlucht tot de Drie Juwelen, en draag de naam Samten Chodron. Maar dat weet bijna niemand. Ik ben een enorm nuchtere boeddhist. Ik studeer ook nog steeds wetenschappelijk, wat overigens prima aansluit bij het boeddhistisch denken.
Rond 2014 heb ik mijn lidmaatschap van de sangha van Shambhala opgezegd. Ik belandde in een bepaalde levenssituatie en merkte dat deze conflicteerde met wat mij in de sangha werd verteld. Het was een teleurstelling, en het werd tijd voor mijn eigen pad. Maar wie weet wat een sangha kan doen, weet ook dat een pad alleen volgen uitdagingen kent. En binnen een paar jaar had samsara mij weer volledig te pakken.
Samsara is fijn en leuk en aantrekkelijk. Het belooft veel en de promotie is enorm. Zeker nu met alle social media. Maar uiteindelijk vond ik er ook deze keer geen voldoening. De laatste grote illusie was waarschijnlijk het vasthouden aan mensen of vriendschap. En dan zeg ik niet dat ik geen fijne vrienden of partner, heb. Ik houd van hen en ze brengen mij blijdschap. Maar ook hierin dreunde de vergankelijkheid door. Het was de laatste vaste grond waar ik onbewust nog in geloofde.
Terug bij af dus, of misschien juist bij Op. Ik heb mijn boeddhisme weer omarmd en heb recent ook weer een cursus gevolgd bij Shambhala. Ik lees dagelijks in mijn boeken (vooral Pema Chodron) en mediteer regelmatig (maar nooit genoeg ;). Het mooie is dat ik, onbewust, mensen aanzet tot een levenswijze die boeddhisme en/of meditatie omarmt. Ineens zag ik het. En ik besefte me dat Archarya Han de Wit mij de naam Samten Chodron destijds niet voor niets gaf. Google het maar eens.
