  1. CW: Does NZ have an immigration issue?

NZ Prime Minister Christopher Luxon announced yesterday that "immigration was an emerging political issue..."

But Paul Spoonley says Luxon is offering a solution for a problem which doesn't exist. Our points-based immigration system is discerning, we don't have waves of refugees knocking at our door and the majority of Kiwis view immigration positively.

Prof Spoonley politely suggests that the PM is reacting to race baiting from Act and NZFirst, "both of whom seem to want to make immigration a central issue for the coming election, but also to see immigration as somehow being divisive and an issue for New Zealanders. I don't think it is."

Once again, the tail wags the dog, the Overton window moves another notch to the right and Luxon's inability to lead is on full display.

  4. CW: iepol, new government negotiation

If the Social Democrats think going into government with FFG is a good idea they're going to lose a lot of support. A large, solid and effective opposition block with modern Sinn Féin would be better and might be the best election campaign for the next few years. Remember what Fianna Fáil did to us all in 2008 - especially if you were in your mid twenties back then.

On the contrary, the #presidency is just a capstone on a huge system, and when we take our eye off the little #elections, we get a systemic rot that leads to someone like Trump

  6. "One hundred thirty-five years ago today, #GroverCleveland was elected to his first term as #President of the #UnitedStates (his inauguration can be seen in the photo above). But #Cleveland’s election to the #presidency this time was not what made him notable. No, it was his #reelection in 1892 for which he is remembered in the #history books. You see, Grover Cleveland would go on to lose the 1888 election, and then be reelected four years later, joking that he had come back to win the office again on his “third try.”

But for our purposes, it was Grover Cleveland’s friendship to the #Jewish people that is especially noteworthy."
