  1. What Labor's safe seat loss to One Nation means for Australian politics
    By Keane Bourke and Courtney Withers

    Labor will be conducting a post-mortem of its crushing defeat in the Secret Harbour by-election to see where it went wrong. But One Nation's win has wider implication for all major parties across Australia.

  6. I’m unsure that Amy Remeikis’ description of the #Labor party’s strategic thinking in the recent by-election is 100% on point;

    “That Labor chose a staffer-turned-gas lobbyist as its candidate in Secret Harbour showed more than any focus group that the government has not realised where the public is at.

    Labor followed its old model of choosing candidates, because that’s how it is done. It forgets that the public is not as obsessed with the gas industry as it is – it assumes that, because it supports gas, the public does and being connected with the gas industry is enough to convince people the candidate is sensible. This was the same arrogance that saw Labor parachute Kristina Keneally into the seat of Fowler in 2019, only to see the backlash as an anomaly and not a shifting tide.”

    Still, AMy’s article presents an arguably valid analysis. The fact remains that domestically, our federal govt is either ignoring or failing to read the room (I’ve said that much before in my political toots). I predict that this lacuna will be #AlboPM’s undoing as a leader of the #PartyWhichHasLostItsWay.

    The Q. is, if I read Amy’s article correctly, why is #AlboPM selectively blind to majority public opinion on domestic issues where he can exert the most control as opposed to international affairs. Might he be looking to gain international recognition… in venal pursuit of a personal *legacy*?

  8. Andrew Hastie warns Zempilas against waving 'white flag' in by-election
    By Nicolas Perpitch

    Prominent WA federal Liberal MP Andrew Hastie intensifies his criticism of state opposition leader Basil Zempilas's strategy for Saturday's Secret Harbour by-election, suggesting he was putting up the white flag in the same way the Liberals disastrously admitted defeat before the 2021 state election.

  10. Farage wins Clacton byelection, but was it worth it? – podcast
    By Presented by Alexandra Topping and Rowena Mason, produced by Sam Gruet, music by Axel Kacoutié; the executive producer is Frankie Tobi

    Nigel Farage has won the Clacton byelection he triggered by resigning from the seat because he wanted to allow voters to ‘stick two fingers up at the entire establishment’. The Reform UK leader’s political finances were under investigation at the time. That process has now resumed, posing the risk of another byelection if Farage is found to have broken the rules. Has his party emerged stronger or weaker as a result of the byelection? And what next for Reform UK and its leader? Alexandra Topping and Rowena Mason discuss the fallout, and what it means
