  1. Donald Trump may have been Britain-baiting, but his statement on unity still mattered – The Irish Times

US president Donald Trump may have been Britain-baiting with his remarks about how he “would love to see”…

  3. #SinnFein can meet and sign anything they want but the Good Friday Agreement requires concurrent consent from both jurisdictions for constitutional change to take effect and I have no doubt that any vote for union with #NorthernIreland will be a firm no. If they really want to be in government, they should focus on the real problems like health, housing and cost of living and stop this united Ireland nonsense.

  5. "The party should have tried to combat racist narratives by peeling people away from smartphones and having “really difficult conversations”, said Fenton. “Go door to door, talk about community concerns but be very, very clear that scapegoating immigrants and refugees is the wrong response.”"

  6. theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/a. "Michelle O’Neill, the #SinnFéin first minister, visited Garvaghy Road & said #residents feared a return to the #violence of the 1990s. 'Does anybody really want to see those days? This #community certainly doesn’t. I certainly do not want to see those days visited upon us & I think the question here is: for the #leaders of #unionism, why do they want us to revisit those dark days?'"

  7. @Selvari21106 The bigger but us the fact that #SinnFein believe that no British Parliament should have any jurisdiction in Ireland. It's so central to the party that it's in the name, which means "ourselves alone".

So if the oath was abolished, SF would still abstain.

    @gareth

  8. @Selvari21106 #SinnFein have been consistent in their policy of #abstentionism for 120 years. The oath is a factor, but far from the only reason.

  9. #GerryAdams welcomes #RóisMáireDonnelly, #SinnFéin councillor and Lord Mayor of #Belfast

"This podcast with Roís-Máire was recorded shortly after the horrific stabbing incident in North Belfast and before the racist pogroms which followed. It was also before the PSNI warned the Belfast Ard Mheara that her life was in danger."

  10. The #SocialDemocrats party of #Ireland dominated the opposition in one of two by-elections held on Friday to replace outgoing TDs (members of the Irish parliament), including a previously strong #SinnFéin, which saw its margin decrease significantly. Despite this, the future general election is now leaning toward a left-wing alliance that will address health, poverty, homelessness, and refugee issues, as well as take a strong stance against the #Israeli military regime. rte.ie/news/2026/0524/1575006-

  11. Self determination is about to get real in the UK:

#SinnFéin, the #SNP and #PlaidCymru have held a meeting at Westminster to discuss what they describe as “a new era of cooperation between Scotland, Wales and the north of Ireland”.

For the first time since devolution, the administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are all led by nationalist politicians. This has been seen as a step towards making the break-up of the UK more possible’

    Guardian Politics Live

  12. In Wes Streeting's resignation letter, he says, "For the first time in our country's history, nationalists are in power in every corner of the United Kingdom - including a dangerous English nationalism represented by Nigel Farage and Reform UK."
To equate Plaid Cymru, Sinn Féin, and the SNP with Reform shows how little the Labour Government understands the public mood.

  13. @petealexharris The #UK wants to be increasingly friendly with the European Union #EU. The EU includes the Republic of Ireland. The Republic of Ireland could, through the EU, make refusing a #BorderPoll extremely costly for the UK.

However, that would depend on the Irish government really wanting a #UnitedIreland, which, even though #SinnFein are currently in power, just ain't necessarily so.

  15. Keep Left emerged from the Catherine Connolly presidential election campaign in 2025.

Similar to Marriage Equality (#MarRef) and Together for Yes (#RepealThe8th), it's non-party, and aims at uniting parties on the left around shared common goals. Dublin Central is something of a test bed.

  16. @Alternatecelt It will certainly motivate very strong showings for all of #SinnFein, #Plaid_Cymru and the #SNP at the next #Westminster election, whenever that occurs.

  17. I just can’t believe the level of delulu admiration some Irish lefties have for Putin’s Russia.

I was talking with a Sinn Féin guy about GLUAS in #Galway. He asks where I’m from. When I say I’m from Russia, he goes, “Oh surely, you’d build this project in six months.”

For fuck’s sake. Infrastructure projects in Ru take years, they’re built like shit, and millions are stolen along the way. Children’s Hospital? That’s literally your normal Russian infrastructure project.

  18. "If the polls are to be believed, the United Kingdom is in a very interesting position. By the end of May, it is likely that the largest party in three of the four constituent countries of the UK will want the larger polity in which they operate to break apart."

  19. [01:01] Bruton skeptical SF, SDLP represented nationalist views

John Bruton did not believe that Sinn Féin and the SDLP accurately represented the views of ordinary northern nationalists and wanted to carry out opinion polling to find out what they really wanted, Newly released State Papers show.

  26. @harriettmb

I read that this morning Harriet. My first thought is when Michelle #SinnFein is moving onto Hume #SDLP political ground, what is the point of the SDLP? Other than the fact they take their seats at Westminster, which is becoming less and less important to this island.

  27. @harriettmb I can't wait for the spin that the #DUP put on this result today.

I am gutted for the #Greens myself. Yeah - it is time for some soul searching for the #SDLP. They are getting destroyed by #Sinnfein

Yes, slow and steady increase for the #Alliance would be nice!

#DUP will say they are the biggest Unionist party which they are. However - they speak for the shrinking electorate, which is losing relevance to the majority of people here.
