  1. #TacticalVoting Before an election there is often a clamour of voices urging tactical voting, “ Loan us your vote” to keep someone else from benefiting from a split vote, fishing for more votes for their candidate, so your second or third choice gets the seat.

But afterwards they never acknowledge those borrowed votes. They claim their policies were really the voters choice.

Never trust a Tory, or any party that enters into a cosy coalition with them, like Labour councils across the country.

  4. @TCatInReality The problem with that case for tactical voting is history. The product of #tacticalvoting has NOT been the compromise you seek.

In 2010, tactical voting for #LibDems put the Conservatives in power to implement a disastrous programme of #austerity.

In 2024, tactical voting for the so-called "#LabourParty" produced a mendacious govt of neoliberal shitehawks,

Time to vote strategically instead of tactically, to build better alternatives.

  5. Returning to the implications of the Green Party of England & Wales winning the Gorton & Denton by-election, @sjwrenlewis offers an interesting (but also perhaps worrying) analysis of what this means for the necessary tactical voting to defeat the Right in at the next general election.

You may agree or disagree with his analysis of voters' intent, but its a usefully pragmatic analysis of the prospects for the progressive left.

  6. One thing that makes me very happy about the Gorton & Denton by-election result is it shows that claiming you have to vote tactically for Labour if you want to keep Reform out is bollocks. This was one of the safest Labour seats in the country, and the Greens still won it.

If you want to keep Reform out, then the message is clear: vote Green. That way you even get a party with policies that are different from Reform.

#Voting together gives us more political power

Yes, we’re lending our votes this time just to get the #Tories & #Reform out, but they’ll have to be earned next time.

  8. Of course, we should use tactical voting to stop the rightwing extremists who want to run every government at every level like Russia, China or Trump's America

  9. New paper out.

What happens when you make a model that includes realistic details about how people discuss ideas and decide how to act upon them? The answer is that with just 3 such elements of realism, one can mathematically explain the emergence of commonly observed situations, such as reaching a consensus and exchanging opinions, but also the separation of ideologies and the appearance of stable polarization. Not only this, but one can also account for phenomena such as peer pressure, cognitive dissonance, tactical voting and toxic idealism ( @benroyce I told you I was going to do it 😀 ) and prove how they affect the final state of the system.

  10. @jwildeboer

It's what happened in the UK until enough people voted tactically in our last election. Now we have a Labour government with an enormous majority of seats won on a 3rd of the votes.

„As the vice president was set to travel on Thursday to Michigan, home to many Muslim and Arab Americans, a leading group protesting U.S. support of Israel said she had not done enough to win its backing.“

  12. @scaramanga

I think you might be a bit harsh on the #green party - for them, widespread #tacticalvoting is likely to have significantly depressed their share of the popular vote - and the number of seats in which tactical voting helped them is a tiny fraction of the whole

Most parties don't accept actual members publicly advocating against their own candidate, & will expel members who do that

Grren remains a pressure group more than a party vying for power - their popular vote count matters

  13. This election has indeed highlighted the urgent need for electoral reform. Switching from FPTP to a multi-member STV system would ensure that every vote counts and make tactical voting unnecessary. It's high time we move towards a fairer, more representative system that truly reflects the will of the people. Let's continue to push for Proportional Representation and make our voices heard. #ElectionLessons #MidBucksPrimary #TacticalVoting #VoteTogether #MidBuck buff.ly/3JPP44z

  14. I've never liked #tacticalVoting. I particularly dislike how certain party activists castigate voters who won't vote tactically for their candidate ("you're electing #Trump!!!").

But recent elections in #UK, #India & #France, show how powerful it can be for opposition parties to team up against incumbents & the #right.

Strategy is important. But as with #climate activism, let's #lobby the parties, who have the power to have impact; judging everyday people is unhelpful.

  15. More potential good Green news.

“And here are the latest Ipsos numbers.

Left-green New Popular Front: 171-187 seats

    Macron’s allies: 152-163 seats

Far right National Front and allies: 134-152 seats.”

“Gabriel Attal, the prime minister and Macron ally, has said that he will offer his resignation.”

  16. I've just signed this petition from the Electoral Reform Society to change the voting system in the UK to be fairer and more representative:

    electoral-reform.org.uk/campai

Yes, we had a chance at this with a referendum in 2011, but that just means it's time to bring this up again.

Especially in light of the rise of smaller parties, and some independent candidates, in the 2024 #GeneralElectionUK it's high time voters had a better guarantee of proper representation.
