LPI supports schools 🏫 and universities with its Academic Partner Program to enable young people to use #opensource software and benefit from its advantages.
Board Member Werner Fischer (and an LPI tux 😉) informed participants of the Alpine Linux Persistence and Storage Summit about this program in the Austrian Alps.
Thank you, Richard Weinberger, and the whole #alpss orga-team for this opportunity 🙂

bye Apple Containers
I’ve eventually stopped playing around with Apple Containers and deinstalled the stuff from my Sequoia installation. The networking is just unreliable for my use case.
I’m using Podman for most stuff now and have moved my Pihole into a very lightweight Alpine Linux VM.
I might test Apple containers again once I’m allowed to upgrade my work laptop to macOS Tahoe as there should be “native” support for the Container framework that also allows for more control over the networking bits and pieces.
Mushroom run
Went for a run with a friend on Sunday. At least we tried. Had to stop every few meters to pick up mushrooms. There were a lot of them. Also good porcini ones. At the other lake we saw a tiny pike in the water and I tried to snap a picture of it.
In the afternoon a did a brief walk outside our property and collected another small basked of mushrooms for my wife. It’s a good season for mushrooms.
How to cure a cold
On Sunday afternoon we’ve attending a public reading of Texts from Mark Twain and … in the little church of Kappe. A village nearby ours. We attended because the person reading was Holger Dehmelt who read from ‘Southern Highway’ by Julio Cortazar, a surrealistic tale from the 1970s that has become frighteningly relevant today, and from ‘How to Cure a Cold’ by Mark Twain.
Holger was the my teacher for many years when I was a kid. Later he was the principal of the Gymnasium in Templin. As mentioned in previous posting we have quite a special relationship to our teachers from back then. So it was great to meet up and that occasion and have a chat before and after the event.
Mesh mess
pulled out my radio nodes again and fleshed them with the Meshcore firmware to test the waters again. Read some accounts on Mastodon that the Meshcore network is more reliable in the communication. But in my areas there’s only crickets to be heard.
I expected that in the countryside of course. But would have expected a bit more traffic in Berlin. But so far … nothing. I’ll keep trying a bit.
Contemplating the idea of offering a community college course for Meshtastic/Meshcore networking that includes the needed hardware for the participants. At least on my mastodon post there was a lot of interest.

Well, In the end I gave up. I couldn’t get #technitiumdns to give out DHCP addresses on BSD, either in a jail or a bhyve VM.
I rebuilt the bhyve VM with a minimal Alpine Linux, restored my Technitium config, and it’s working fine.
Best I can figure is there’s some weird network assumptions being made deep in the .NET stack that Linux is more bug-compatible with.
But at least it’s working now and (most importantly) nobody in the household noticed a load-bearing service got swapped out.

Video review on #benchmark of #Kali #Linux 2024.02 https://youtu.be/019eJJgc9js. Curious why someone would choose #KaliLinux to run #Xfce when the #performance is so poor compared to Alpine Linux with Xfce. Also the 13GB of #DiskUsage is one of the highest of any #OperatingSystem #benchmarked so far.

#gVisor : systrap actually outperforms kvm in a syscall microbenchmark? This is on baremetal...
systrap: ~8s
ptrace: ~121s (lmfao)
kvm: ~15s(benchmark is just "perf bench syscall basic", which runs 10000000 getppid() calls, on Alpine Linux)

A video on #HannahMontana #Linux v2 with #KDE. A new leader in Linux #performance has been #benchmarked for the #TierList. It appears that #Plasma has only come to perform worse over time. Hopefully #LinuxDistributions other than Alpine Linux can find a way to improve their situations. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_mCLcVi9a0

I've set up an inventory system for my #electricalengineering stuff yesterday. Definitely didn't take the whole day because I wanted to use an Alpine Linux container instead of Debian. But I think it was well worth it. Now I have my inventory, datasheets, footprints, and 3D models all in one place! And there's a #KiCAD plugin for it as well! Though that's yet to be tested.
The software is called #PartDB.

Are you looking for a #trustworthy and well maintained #hyperlocal #multiarch @nlnetlabs #Unbound #Docker image, based on #Alpine #Linux with focus on #security, #performance and a small #image size with #Pihole in mind? Look no further: https://github.com/madnuttah/unbound-docker

Anyone familiar with #postmarketos that might have an idea why the reboot time is so slow at 57 seconds (no window manager or desktop environment) with the default settings? Also the system load seems high compared to alpine linux https://everybytecounts.org/ #pmos #pmbootstrap

From 2021 suggestions of best OS for running #docker only - #CoreOS (discontinued), #RancherOS (discontinued), Ubuntu Core (can't use groupadd, unfriendly to VM-no ISO), Redhat Project Atomic (discontinued in favor of CoreOS which is also discontinued), Mesosphere DCOS (is there a free option?) and #Alpine Linux. I guess that leaves me with either Alpine or #Ubuntu Server.

Adélie Linux.
In BETA phase now, already intriguing.
Based on "GNUless" Alpine Linux, but aiming for common desktop use. Userland instead of GNU Core: BusyBox.
For C standard library, it uses musl, instead of GNU glibc.
"We do believe that Linux should be usable by anyone, regardless of income level or past computer experience. We don't believe that Linux has to be hard to use."
Eye on this one.
