It's day 14 of #MenstrualHealthAwarenessMonth, and today's topic is a big news story from this week about the rebranding of an important condition. Say goodbye to #PCOS and hello to #PMOS! Long thread incoming... And it gets personal! 1/16 #PeriodFriendlyWorld

I appreciate that @19thnews article on #PMOS (renamed from #PCOS) specifically mentions that #trans men and #nonbinary people, as well as women, are susceptible to this disorder.

"With 30 or 40 years of research, we've realized that this is more about hormones and metabolism, not just about the ovary."

This is great news!
"‘Unprecedented’ global effort gives new name to polycystic ovary syndrome – and new hope to millions of women"
"Announcing the new name at the European Congress of Endocrinology in Prague on Tuesday, Teede said the term PCOS didn’t capture the “multi-system burden that people with this condition have suffered”, and that it “directs attention to only one organ”."
"PMOS is hoped to better reflect the condition’s complex nature – which affects not only the reproductive system in people assigned female at birth but also the metabolism and the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease."

PCOS is now PMOS: Why the condition affecting millions of women got a new name https://english.mathrubhumi.com/lifestyle/health/pcos-renamed-to-pmos-medical-update-e8r3mipy?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon #PCOS #PMOS #WomensHealth #Hormones #HealthNews

"The main reason is that it is a misnomer. Not only can people have the condition without having polycystic ovaries, but the condition does not involve cysts.
...
In particular PMOS reflects the long-term, complex nature of the health condition, emphasising that it is a hormonal or “endocrine” disorder that can affect the body’s reproductive and metabolic systems and is associated with multiple health conditions." -
Forty years too late for some of us, but this is game-changing stuff and will - finally - actually improve millions of women's lives:

'The name was inaccurate': PCOS gets a new name after years-long effort; Polycystic ovary syndrome (#PCOS) will now be called polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (#PMOS). Experts say that the new name better reflects the nature of the disease. https://www.livescience.com/health/reproductive-health/the-name-was-inaccurate-pcos-gets-a-new-name-after-years-long-effort

After 14 years of research and 22,000 survey responses, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) has officially been renamed polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS).
PMOS, a common hormonal and metabolic disorder affecting 170 million women worldwide, can lead to infertility, metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes, and mental health issues.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (#PCOS) was officially renamed Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (#PMOS) on May 12, 2026,. This change, published in The #Lancet and announced at the European Congress of Endocrinology, followed a rigorous 14-year global consensus process. The update aims to reduce stigma, improve diagnosis, and accurately reflect the condition's complex, multi-system nature beyond just the ovaries.
This is huge news for women, as it’s estimated that up to a third of women experience some PMOS symptoms. The previous nomenclature meant that many women were not being diagnosed correctly. As a matter of #bioethics of women’s treatment, this is a big sea change. As to how it changes medical professional’s approach, we will have to determine.

Reminds me, I've got a Pixel 3a collecting dust puppies in my home office closet, I really need to flash it with #pmOS. ;)

Why switching from one dictator phone to another while there are more open alternatives?

@aplaithal
Your DP seems to be from the phone, is it right?
I got #pmos suggested by @badrihippo earlier and am looking into this OS, hoping that it will serve my purpose. -
Some non-US company needs to build a hardware phone set around Postmarket OS and just 'get on with it'. There's an obvious appetite for something other than Google Android or Apple iOS phones.
I mean, the OS is there just waiting; throw some professional engineering effort around power management, cameras, and UX and it's a good jump into a practical, commodity phone that is open with a lot of heavy lifting already done. If that corp was practical and ethical it even could be a decent technology and social "good".
In Canada I'd hope a company like BlackBerry could do something like this but, do they even make hardware anymore, do they exist in the mobile space? If they exist would they even still have the talent to pull off something like this?
It doesn't have to be an expensive premium device, it just needs to be decent enough, affordable device with open software like an unencumbered browser, tethering, ability to run Signal...
Random thoughts...

In the current Distrowatch Weekly issue postmarketOS with Phosh has been reviewed. Even though it has been tested on a fairly outdated Pinephone, pmOS seem to have made a really good overall impression: https://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20260105

I can finally work on it (managed to unlock my device's bootloader and currently the kernel is flashing)

Was thinking of getting a bigger #eMMC module for my #PinebookPro, but the one that was recommended was $50 for 256GiB which is a little... ridiculous.
I think I'm just going to wipe the 60GiB stock eMMC with #pmOS, fix up the loose screws, and get a 256GB microSDXC card for extra storage.
