  3. What I Built

🕯️ Ghost Journal AI: The Hollow — Where AI Meets the Supernatural

What if a haunted diary could create its own mysteries, hide secrets in evidence, and answer your questions while trying not to reveal the truth?

I built Ghost Journal AI: The Hollow, an AI-powered supernatural mystery investigation game. Players enter a fictional scenario, and the AI creates a mystery with three suspects, evidence clues, hidden motives, and a chilling story.

Players can investigate the suspects, examine the evidence, question a haunted diary, and finally accuse the culprit to reveal the solution.

The application also saves completed investigations in a local journal, so each case becomes part of the player's history.

I interpreted "Ghost in the Machine" as a story in which an AI feels almost supernatural: a voice inside a machine that knows the secrets of a mystery and guides you through the darkness.

    Demo

The application currently runs locally on my laptop using Streamlit and Ollama.

Demo: I am preparing a video demonstration of the application.

The demo will show mystery generation, suspect investigation, evidence review, interaction with the haunted diary, and the final accusation.

    Code

GitHub repository: Ghost Journal AI: The Hollow

The project is built with Python and Streamlit, uses Ollama for local AI inference, and stores investigation history in SQLite.

Replace the example GitHub URL above with your actual public repository link before publishing.

    How I Built It

I built the application using open-source tools and a locally running open-weight language model.

    My technology stack includes:

Python — application logic and investigation flow.

Streamlit — the interactive web interface.

Ollama — running the AI model locally.

Llama 3.1 8B — generating mystery stories and powering the haunted diary chatbot.

SQLite — storing investigation history locally.

Requests — communicating with Ollama's local API.

When a player enters a scenario, the application asks the model to generate a structured mystery containing a title, opening scene, three suspects, evidence clues, a diary entry, a culprit, a solution, a twist, and an epilogue.

The player can then question the haunted diary. After the player submits an accusation, the application reveals the culprit and solution and saves the result in the investigation journal.

I tested the main workflow, including case generation, suspect and evidence display, diary responses, accusations, and journal history.

    Why Does Open Innovation Matter?

Open innovation made it possible for me to experiment with an AI-powered storytelling experience without building the entire project around a paid, hosted AI API.

By using Ollama and an open-weight model locally, the core AI experience can run on my own machine. After the model has been downloaded, the application can generate stories without requiring a continuous connection to a remote AI service.

This approach also gives me flexibility. I can experiment with different models, adjust prompts, and improve the mystery-generation process without depending entirely on one provider's hosted API.

It also comes with trade-offs: local models require sufficient hardware resources, and AI-generated mysteries can still contain inconsistencies. Improving the logical connection between evidence and solutions is one of my next development goals.

For me, open innovation means being able to learn, experiment, and build something creative with tools that I can run and adapt myself.

    My Agent Session

I developed and tested the application locally.

I do not have a DevRelay session link to share at this time.

    The Spirit of It

The idea behind The Hollow is simple: what if the machine isn't just answering you, but telling you a story it doesn't want you to finish?

The haunted diary is the heart of the experience. It responds to questions, hints at hidden truths, and keeps the atmosphere alive while the player searches for the culprit.

I wanted to combine the creativity of AI storytelling with the feeling of investigating an old supernatural mystery, where every clue matters and every character might be hiding something.

The project is also an experiment in making local AI feel more personal, interactive, and a little unsettling.

Sometimes the scariest thing isn't a ghost in an old house. It's a voice inside a machine that knows more than it should. 🕯️

My project explores open-weight AI and local inference through an interactive storytelling application.

Built with curiosity, open-source tools, and a haunted diary that refuses to stay silent.

  6. I wired up a free model endpoint last month. I sent one request. It returned 200 OK. I shipped the feature. Then the tool calls never happened. The endpoint accepted the request. It just ignored half of it. Sound familiar?

Here is my question. What does a 200 actually prove? My answer: almost nothing about capabilities. It proves the transport worked. That is it.

So I stopped trusting status codes and started probing the contract. This post is the FAQ I wish I had read first. It ends with a script you can run in about two minutes.

Myth 1: A 200 means the model supports my feature

The server can accept a tools array and silently ignore it. The model then answers in prose. No error. No warning. Your code sees a normal response and skips the branch. Is that a bug in the model? No. It is a bug in your assumption.

The corrected model: support is a property of the endpoint, not of the model name. Probe it. Record it. Re-probe when anything changes.

Myth 2: finish_reason is optional metadata

It is the most important field in the response. length means the model ran out of output budget. Your answer looks fine and is probably cut in half. I have watched a parser happily eat a truncated JSON object.

    {"choices":[{"finish_reason":"length","message":{"content":"{\"items\": [1, 2, 3, 4"}}]}

If you do not branch on finish_reason, you are parsing whatever bytes arrived. That is not a feature. That is a coin flip.

Myth 3: Streaming and non-streaming are interchangeable

They are two different code paths. In streaming, finish_reason arrives in the final chunk, not the first. Some servers only report token usage when you ask for it explicitly. Some omit it entirely.

Ask yourself: does my client read the last event? Mine did not, for a week. I was logging None as the finish reason every single time.

Myth 4: JSON mode means my schema

It means valid JSON. It does not mean your keys. It does not mean your types. Validate every response against a schema before it touches business logic. Treat model output like user input, because that is what it is.

Myth 5: Retries are always safe

Retry a failed read, fine. Retry a tool call that already wrote a row, and now you have two rows. I learned this from a duplicate charge, not a blog post.

Add an idempotency key your tool honors. Make the retry decision depend on the operation, not on the exception class.

The artifact: a five-minute capability probe

This script uses only the Python standard library. It assumes a chat-completions-shaped endpoint. Adjust the paths if yours differs.

Nothing here measures quality. Nothing here measures speed. Those are different experiments with different controls.

    Where I run this

I run probes from a throwaway box, not my laptop. Same reason I do not test migrations on my main database. The probe should not touch anything I care about.

MonkeyCode's free model access and free server option are the two pieces I use for that. The free model access gives the probe something to talk to. The free server option gives it a disposable place to run. Disclosure: This article was prepared as part of MonkeyCode's product outreach.

I am not claiming the free tier is fast, generous, or permanent. I do not know its limits, and I am not going to guess at them. Run the concurrency probe and read your own numbers. That is the whole point of this post.

Limitations and who should skip this

    • This is a smoke test. It is not a benchmark and not a load test.
    • Results describe one endpoint, one model, one moment. They expire.
    • Paid tiers can behave differently from free ones. Re-probe after switching.
    • Only probe endpoints you own or are authorized to test.
    • Do not use this to grade answer quality. It checks contract shape only.

Skip this approach if you need contractual latency SLOs, deterministic output, or guaranteed tool-call behavior. Buy a plan with a written contract. A probe will not save you from a missing SLA.

    The corrected mental model

Treat every free endpoint as a set of separate promises. Transport, truncation, tool calls, JSON shape, and concurrency are five different promises. A 200 only confirms the first one.

Which promise broke on your last integration? I keep a one-page probe log per endpoint now. It has saved me two weekends so far.#ai #api #testing #python #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

  10. Asocial

I came home from work some time ago to find my wife settling down to watch the latest episode of Coronation Street.

Onscreen, a new family had recently moved on to the street, and the Dad was shown talking to a couple of the regular characters, making arrangements to do something, and it struck me – in just 3 minutes of screen time, a brand new character had exchanged more words with his neighbours than I had in the 10 1/2 years I had lived here.

Which got me thinking – of all the things I know, how to make friends isn’t one.

Out of all my friends (at least, out in the so-called “real world”), all of them decided I was a person they wanted to be friends with, they did all the running, and all I did was decide to go along with them.

This was rarely something I did lightly – there were plenty of people who decided we were going to be friends, but I decided to have nothing to do with them – but with all the people I count as friends, they did all the running, and I just went along with it.

It’s the same with relationships – off hand, I can only think of 6 times I asked girls out – 2 of them turned me down flat, 2 were the same girl on 2 different occasions (and I eventually asked her to marry me – which later happened!), and the other 2 times ended pretty disastrously. Every other time I got into a relationship, they did all the running after me, and I just went along with it.

On a related note, I have no idea how small talk works – this is an essential skill for developing all manner of relationships, and yet I have not a single clue as to the purpose of small talk, nor how it works – I can do it, but only by copying conversational gambits I’ve seen other people use, which means that conversations with me can often be stilted, and are liable to turn rather strange at unexpected moments.

By extension, flirting (and “chatting someone up”) is also something where I utterly fail to grasp any mechanism by which it works. As I said about small talk, I can do it, I just have no idea what I’m doing.

Actually, I would like to modify those statements – I can do small talk and flirting, but only if I don’t think about it – as soon as I start to think about what I am doing, or what I should say next, I turn in to Cat in the infamous dance/dream sequence from Red Dwarf ( https://youtu.be/yn8wWQweNbU ) – I get tongue-tied, and completely unable to communicate.

Which, let’s face it, isn’t good, whether you’re discussing the weather with the random person sitting next to you on the bus home from work, or chatting up some random stranger in a bar.

I’ve no idea if it is connected to all this, but I have always had a preference for my own company – not having to fill any silences or think of topics of conversation is always pleasant.

I remember back in school, I had a friend I spent a lot of time with – many were the times we finished school, went to the local library to collect some books, then went back to his, where we would occupy chairs at opposite sides of his living room, then read books in silence, until the time I had to leave to go home – about the only thing his mother ever heard me say was “Right, I’d better get off. See ya!”

One of the things I love about my marriage, and my wife – we often spend time just being in the same room – not necessarily talking, not necessarily doing the same thing, but doing whatever it is we are doing, together.

One of us might be watching telly while the other reads, or she might be doing something on her computer, usually doing some family history research, and I’ll walk in with my laptop and slouch down in a chair and do some writing for one project or another – but we are doing it, together, just enjoying being with someone.

Louise’s office is by the front window of the dining room, and I will often be found in the kitchen, through the rear of the dining room, cooking up a storm, while we listen to some music, which usually involves one of us dancing our way over to the other and busting some moves for a few seconds before going back to what we were doing.

We might also be talking  – but no-one is being forced to talk, only when we are ready, which I find makes conversations flow more easily.

And this is the thing – I’m not, as some people think, anti-social, I don’t hate people, I don’t want to avoid having friends – I just want friends who are on my wavelength, friendships on my terms – friends who are willing to accept that I don’t always want to be drawn into conversation, but when I feel the need to talk will accept that as well.

I’m asocial, quite possibly because of my autism, and proud of it.

Social interactions leave me physically and mentally exhausted – which means that, if I put any time or effort into interacting with you, then you should feel honoured.

(Or I’m at work, and have to put the minimum effort in!)

  11. The Change by Kirsten Miller

I think I discovered this book because of the Book Cougars. I watch so many YouTube book reviewers though that I am not sure.

The Change is about three women who find the body of a young girl stashed in a garbage bag and thrown over the side of a rode. They discover that she is one of several missing girls.

The main characters are Nessa James, a widow with twin daughters, Harriet Osborne a woman whose career and marriage was destroyed at the same time, and Jo Levison a woman who owns a fitness center designed to give women back their strength in more ways than one. Jo is happily married and has a young daughter.

Nessa has a special ability to speak with the dead. When they discover the first body, she becomes aware of more.

The women take it upon themselves to investigate and give closure to all the families. They quickly realize the deaths are connected to a gated community not too far from where the bodies were disposed of.

This story gave me vibes of the Epstein files. It’s about those with wealth who think their needs are more important than life itself. The copyright is 2022 so that may have sparked an idea.

I don’t usually read fantasy, but this one felt more like a mystery. The more I read, I realize how the boundaries of genre seem to sometimes be harder to define. This one does have a little paranormal storyline because of Nessa’s special ability, Harriet likes to work with plants, and Jo finds her strength in an odd way.

I picked this one up to read now because we were moving into the spooky time and it had witchy vibes.

I had a friend who reviewed it on Goodreads and was disappointed in the book because of some of the violence. I get that but I also think that reading it now having watched how our current administration is refusing to investigate the Epstein files and punish those who are guilty, it makes a little more sense to me. I understood the need for the violence to clear out the evil that had saturated the community.

It is a story about how one person can make a difference and how three women made a change.

It is well written. I enjoyed it and would look more from this author in the future.

This book is a commitment at 470 pages in hardcover and counts toward my unending books on my shelf to read. I like books at 300 pages or less, but this one seemed like a fast read.

I had a couple of bookish adventures this past week. Both were at Beaverdale Books, a local indie bookstore. The first was an author event with D. M. Pulley. She was promoting her book Stone Mad. She is an architect and has a love for old buildings. She finds buildings with a reputation for being haunted along with a possible real-life crime and creates a mystery. I purchased her newest release Stone Mad and can’t wait to read it. I will be reading her backlist as well.

My second bookish adventure was also at Beaverdale Books. Four authors from my Sister’s in Crime chapter came to play a game with the readers. It was interactive. We helped choose the main character, setting, motive, weapon, and a few other tools in the making of a mystery. We helped show the readers what it is like to develop a mystery as it is written. It was fun and there were treats.

Let me know if you have a good book I need to read.

It is all your fault. I am barely into the third chapter of the newest "#TearmoonEmpire" and my mind is screaming time paradox.

To be fair they instantly recognize it is a paradox.

By the way this the first place I have run into a theory of time ripples. That is when a time-line is changed it causes ripples which disturb time and will trigger other changes.

It not a Yuri series but I find it a entertaining light hearted read. It's one of the series I look forward to new installments.

  16. There's an interesting thing I've noticed about myself with the onslaught of hard-to-read AI prose seemingly everywhere. I am historically a rules lawyer (in my head, not out loud) about grammar and spelling, silently judging folks for ugly or clunky prose. AI writing has softened my position on this issue. LLMs write with excellent grammar, but they have no intention, so they can't ever really get to the point. They don't want anything, so there is no point to anything they say. They are generally bad writers because of it.

My fixation when reading now is on whether there is a clear point, something the author wants me to get, not whether the grammar is nice or the spelling is good.

I think this is telling me that I, and you, shouldn't use AI even to edit and definitely not to write. I suspect it makes your writing worse even while making it more grammatically defensible to an English teacher.

  20. While walking the dog I passed a neighbor's house with three very loud and energetic dogs. I almost never see any of these dogs, because they are in a fenced backyard, and I usually don't hear all three at once, but the full orchestra was out that morning, two barking loudly in different keys and tempos and one heartily going BAROO BAROO BAROO. It was like a modern jazz concert.

I stopped to record it and an older man came out of the house across the street from the Three Dog House. He was behind me. "I'm enjoying the music," I said, and then I thought about hearing that every day. "Probably you don't enjoy it."

Because I was interrupted, I did not record the concert.

The man looked at Minnie and exclaimed, "The cone of shame!" Yes, Minnie is still wearing the cone. It's been a month. We have an appointment at an eye specialist and are planning to switch vets.

A few minutes later I passed a parked car with a license plate frame that read something like, "CALIFORNIA — WHERE AMERICA'S DAY STARTS." At least I *think* that's what it said. But that does not make sense. As a longtime tech trade journalist, I am aware in my bones that the rest of America wakes up well before California does; when I hit my desk on a workday morning my Teams messages and emails are already full.

That sent me a down an Internet rabbit hole to find out where America's day REALLY starts — in other words, what's the furthest point east in either the continental US or territories. There are two possible answers, one of them a technicality.

The common-sense answer is a point in the U.S. Virgin Islands. I always forget the U.S. Virgin Islands exists.

The other answer, which will be great to know for a pub trivia quiz: A point on the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, which goes so far west that it crosses the 180th Meridian and becomes east.

I did not research this point, but I expect that this means the point in the US that is furthest west and the point that is furthest east are a single footstep apart from each other.

  21. @pherjung Thank you. I found these settings yesterday and managed to configure language layouts correctly.

Still I am currently trying virtual keyboard apps, because the native one in Sailfish OS doesn't support Korean (a language I am learning) and doesn't provide emojis either.

  22. Ok...Serbia's Student List just ousted Alexandar Vučić and I can't wait to see how their leaderless movement which operates under a self-imposed system of strict consent, manages in a parliamentary environment.

    I am intrigued.

  23. An amazing day. I will update with some photos tomorrow. I am too pooped.

But it was wonderfully creative, I was making things and hanging out in one of my favourite places with lovely friends and peers.

  24. Epstein Files
    I filed another FOIA

DOJ says they have released all the Epstein files except for ones that are duplicative, exempt from disclosure or protected by privilege. OK, let’s test that assertion with a FOIA request.

Here is the list of non-testifying witnesses from Ghislaine Maxwell’s criminal trial.
    justice.gov/epstein/files/Data 0095751.pdf

Starting on the second page each blue line is a different person. Under each blue line are documents for that person. A number of those documents are FD-302 interviews. These are documents prepared by the FBI after interviewing someone.

It is *easy* for anyone to determine if a document has been released. Simply search DOJ’s Epstein website on the 3-part document identifier in the first column of the Maxwell list. I did that. For each FD-302 on the Maxwell list I searched DOJ’s website. By doing that I determined which people were victims or likely victims and which FD-302s have been released.

Keep in mind that only about 100 of the 1,000+ victims were involved in any way in Maxwell’s trial.

    Now about that FOIA...

My recent FOIA request listed the 3-part document identifiers from the Maxwell list that were FD-302s for victims or likely victims and which I have not been able to find on DOJ’s website. I specifically asked for copies that **include the EFTA number** stamped in the lower right corner of each page.

If those FD-302 victim interviews have actually been released as claimed by DOJ, then it would be a simple matter for DOJ to produce copies in response to my FOIA, right? On the other hand, if those 302s have not been released then the FOIA statutes require DOJ to tell me there are no responsive documents - which would be an admission that they never released the 302s listed in my FOIA.

In reply to my FOIA I received the exact same goofy letter that I have received several times in reply to earlier FOIAs. Here is one of those earlier letters that I put on Google drive:
    drive.google.com/uc?export=dow

Bottomline: DOJ refuses to provide any proof that these FD-302 victim interviews have been released and also refuses to admit that they have not been released. That is not a defensible position.

For anyone interested in my analysis of the Maxwell list of non-testifying witnesses it is a PDF on Google drive.
    drive.google.com/uc?export=dow

    But wait, there’s more...

I also filed a different FOIA that is also based on the Maxwell list of non-testifying witnesses. This time DOJ replied and basically asked for clarification which I provided. Now I am waiting for DOJ to reply again.

If you look at my report (see link above) then you will see multiple examples of where DOJ released some FD-302 interviews but not all interviews for the **same victim**. Obviously DOJ was using some criteria to decide which interviews to release and which interviews to not release. This FOIA asked for a copy of those criteria. I will report back when I get a reply.

BTW, victim 045 in the Maxwell list was interviewed four times. Initially DOJ only released the first FD-302 interview report. That report does not mention Trump. Later, after widespread coverage in the media, DOJ released the other three FD-302 interviews for this same victim. Each of those interviews includes the word Trump.

Sure would like to see the criteria DOJ used to hide many FD-302 victim interviews from the public. Stay tuned...

  29. well, I guess I did wake up feeling dysphoric about my face... taking care of sick kittens at the shelter helped me forget about it for a bit. now that I am alone with my thoughts...

  30. Apparently, I’m okay to go to Lowe’s, but not “put together enough” to go to Target. I mean, I am dirty, unshaven, with stained clothes and untended cuts and scratches… so maybe that’s not off-base.
