I don't recall seeing them before, so I was amazed and took some photos. 💚

Egg freezing: an increasing choice in Canada
“Despite the surging interest in egg freezing, doctors warn that they can't guarantee a successful pregnancy down the line, with odds depending on the number of eggs retrieved and the age of the patient at the time of retrieval”

One of the most stupid, self-serving, arrogant moves (calling unnecessary election) by a sitting premier in Canadian history and voters made them pay.

The human translation:
"Poetry –
but what is poetry anyway?
More than one rickety answer
has tumbled since that question first was raised.
But I just keep on not knowing, and I cling to that
like a redemptive handrail."
https://www.szymborska.org.pl/en/wislawa/selected-poems/some-people-like-poetry/
Translated by Stanisław Barańczak and Clare Cavanagh
The LLM translation:
"Poetry –
but what exactly is poetry.
More than one wavering answer
to this question has already been given.
And I do not know and do not know and cling to that
like to a saving handrail."
Interesting result: the LLM translation could be more accurate (compare the penultimate line) word-by-word but I still would prefer the human translation. For instance, the word "saving" may be more common (higher probability in LLM) but the word "redemptive" has a different quality. Also, the human translation paints a picture ("rickety", "tumbled") while the LLM version does not. The poem translated by humans is a new work of art, the LLM translation is not.
Apparently, human translators are a species at the brink of extinction, which I find very regrettable. It would be good to have in books a quality label like "translated by humans" to protect that species.
I have never read a poem of my favorite poet. Wisława Szymborska (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wis%C5%82awa_Szymborska) wrote in Polish, a language I cannot read. But there are excellent translations of her work into German (Karl Dedecius) and English (Clare Cavanagh and Stanisław Barańczak). They are excellent in the sense of the translated poems being excellent. I am neither able to judge the quality of the Polish originals, nor the accuracy of the translation but I have to trust the reputation of Szymborska and the ability of the translators.
If AI can generate poetry that is ranked higher by humans than the products of human poets (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2024/nov/18/ai-poetry-rated-better-than-poems-written-by-humans-study-shows), maybe AI it is also better at translating? I have made a small test to get an idea. I took the last stanza of a famous poem ("Some People Like Poetry") by Szymborska, ran it through a widely used current LLM, and compared the outcome to a human translation. My test is of course inadequate to answer the above question, I should have done a blinded study with more poems, more poets, more readers.
The original:
"Poezję –
tylko co to takiego poezja.
Niejedna chwiejna odpowiedź
na to pytanie już padła.
A ja nie wiem i nie wiem i trzymam się tego
jak zbawiennej poręczy."
From https://www.szymborska.org.pl/szymborska/wiersze/niektorzy-lubia-poezje/
In the next post of this thread I show you the two translations, the human one and the one by the LLM.

L’Esprit indomptable

Raytracing: Version 0.10.1 of the plugins for LightWave 3D 5.x
@midwan has updated his plugin package for the AmigaOS version of Lightwave 3D. Version 0.10.0 added the six new plugins listed below; a bug-fix update, version 0.10.1, is meanwhile available as well.
Shooter: Heliobane
Heliobane is a shooter for AGA Amigas (as well as for Windows, macOS, and Linux using an included emulator and AROS ROM), which, in its stripped-down version, also runs on a stock Amiga 1200 - though a 68030 processor and 8 MB of Fast-RAM are recommended. Created with "AI" support, the game features three worlds with 15 levels.
m68k-Assembler: Amiga Assembly plugin 1.9.0 for Visual Studio Code
Amiga Assembly is an assembler plugin for Visual Studio Code designed for writing Amiga programs. Among the new features in version 1.9.0 is LinuxJedi debugging with the Copperline emulator.
The game, available to download for USD 7.49 (approx. EUR 6.70), was created with the help of AI. The free demo allows you to play through the first ten rooms and get a feel for the puzzles.
Puzzle: Tiltrune
Gaboo Arts Entertainment has ported its C64 puzzle game "Tiltrune" to Amigas with 1 MB of RAM: deep inside the mountain, a forgotten treasure chamber lies hidden behind more than 80 rooms. To solve the puzzles in each room, you can neither jump nor climb, but you can rotate the entire room by 90 degrees, causing everything to fall down. The aim is to collect every gem and open the bright green exit.
RTG driver: PrismRTG 1.2
PrismRTG is a completely rewritten graphics card software package, or rather an RTG driver, for classic Amiga computers running AmigaOS 3.x. It is designed to render the Workbench and compatible programmes via a dedicated graphics card rather than via the native Amiga chipset.
Version 1.2 is much faster featuring more boards.
Adventure: Robot-LE
In the adventure game "Robot-LE" you play as that robot exploring alien worlds in search of a habitable place for humanity, as the Sun is expected to become a nova.
Code editor for AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS: Pragtical 3.10.1
George 'walkero' Sokianos has ported a new version 3.10.1 of the "practical and pragmatic" code editor Pragtical to AmigaOS 4 and MorphOS.
Angry Birds clone: target shooting with a slingshot in "Tough Nuts" (AGA)
"Tough Nuts" is an artillery game inspired by Angry Birds. It features nine different worlds, each with ten levels, nine heroes with different abilities, boss battles, cartoon-style cutscenes, and ten different music tracks.
Web directory: AmigaSource celebrates its 25th anniversary with a relaunch
In 2001, Scott A Pistorino submitted a news item to amiga-news.de to mark the launch of his project. Twenty-five years later, the website is celebrating its anniversary with a relaunch.
The campaign funded in less than 24 hours! New stretch goal:
If we reach 7,500 euros, there will be a higher-resolution image.
Crowdfunding: First-person RPG "Eldemar"
Darkage Software, the Italian development team with roots in the demo scene and known for titles such as Tales from Heaven, has announced Eldemar, an ambitious new first-person role-playing game for the Amiga, and launched a Kickstarter campaign.
Eldemar is written entirely in 68k assembler and runs natively on AGA hardware as well as on any Amiga with an RTG graphics card.
File manager: Directory Opus 5.104
The open-source file manager Directory Opus 5 is being further developed by @midwan. Now version 5.104 is available:
