A new paper proposes the reproductive resilence hypothesis, in which species' (specifically, humans') survival depends on successful multiple female pregnancies. Female longevity is therefore key to survival, and thus female reproductive biology underlies longevity--and should be better studied.

New research on rotifers finds that the maternal age effect, wherein a mother's age affects the characteristics of her offspring (usually adversely as age increases, and persisting across generations) is the result of epigenetic changes rather than DNA damage, and some effects can be reversed within a single generation.

A study of reproduction in mammals, birds, reptiles, and dinosaurs confirmed that egg/neonate size varies with relative brain size in birds and mammals. Theropod and non-theropod dinosaurs had relatively small brains, but the former had higher metabolic rates and reproductive characteristics more similar to birds. Egg size seems to increase with relative brain size along the bird lineage.

I've done a lot of computational reproductions so I thought I'd seen it all, but this one is new: the OSF repository features a single Excel file which, to my surprise, does actually contain both the data and the code. The file has multiple tabs and some of them contain R code, either pasted in a large textbox, or tabular format with one line per row (one tab has > 900 rows!).

A cool bit of #SciFiScience, on the biological side, is generating gametes, which is something we can't quite do yet. But we can get very close and conceive stem cells to a precursor form.

Parker et al. intend to impose those ancient, pre-modern, pre-scientific, misogynistic authority figures —by way of highly selected texts — on all of us, and to claim that these highly selected texts represent "the" tradition set in stone for all eternity. Take it or leave it. "The" tradition says. And law now says, as it cites these authorities.

What Parker et al. are about is finding ancient authorities imbued with patriarchal, pre-scientific assumptions, to impose as "the" authorities on 21st-century thinking about human reproduction.

• In pregnancy, a woman is merely an incubator for what really matters in the process of reproduction, the "little man" that the male, as the active agent of reproduction, places in the passive receptacle provided by the female.
• Sperm, what happens to it, where it goes, what it does, whether its potential to create life is respected, is supreme in this sexual ethical system. Males count supremely. Women are…just there.

• Hovering in the background of this thinking is the assumption — here Aquinas is indebted to Aristotle, who knew nothing much about the actual biological facts of reproduction — that sperm is sacred. Sperm is life itself, in this way of thinking. Wasting sperm militates against life itself.
• Aristotle and Aquinas thought that reproduction involves the penis placing in the passive receptacle of the womb a "little man," a homunculus.
