  3. CW: ADHD meds - titration update

    Hey folks :ADHD_Butterfly:

Our titration on guanfacine prolonged-release (Intuniv) tablets is going broadly well. We have been, and still are, experiencing side effects, but nothing typically that we didn't expect.

We completed our first full week on the guanfacine last week, taking 2 mg nightly, and started taking 3 mg nightly on Monday this week.

We're taking the guanfacine alongside lisdex (Elvanse), which we're presently still taking as a split dose (2 x 30 mg capsules daily; each capsule taken ~2-3 hours apart).

The positive effects for us so far have been:

    • Lowered anxiety.
    • Lowered RSD.
    • Slightly lowered threshold for initiating a task we don't want to do.
    • Slightly better sleep hygiene (due to slight drowsiness).
    • Lowered heart rate and blood pressure.

The certain side effects so far have been:

    • Increase in wind (flatulence).
    • Change in toilet schedule.
    • Drowsiness (especially upon waking).

Something we're monitoring to determine whether it's an effect of the meds, perhaps directly or indirectly, is that we've experienced a few instances of intense, explosive (but very directed) rage

These appear so far to be linked to trauma and/or neurospicy triggers we have, rather than just anything, but we're not sure yet.

    e.g.,

    • Accessibility issues with the NHS and DWP.
    • The mind-boggling complexity of mattress hunting, due to:
      • Dodgy mattress companies.
      • Fake (or paid for) review websites.
      • AI chatbots answering email queries!!!
      • Legit companies only selling products in stores, and providing e-tailers with bespoke mattress types which therefore cannot be directly compared without spending hours making a detailed spreadsheet, cracking the jargon code, and finding section diagrams.
    • Smart devices randomly playing music, despite no-one using their wake word and no-one saying anything like that.
    • Cold-callers not being able to read the "no cold callers" sign.

It's not clear whether the outbursts are:

    • a side effect of the guanfacine.
    • an indirect effect of the guanfacine.
    • unrelated to the guanfacine.

We objectively have a lot of stressors in our life, and part of how our mind has dealt with them has been to not focus on them.

Counterintuitively, it's likely that being able to function more has meant we've had to start addressing more issues, which has increased stress in other ways.

It's overall still a massive improvement, and we do feel calmer overall, plus we'd have had to deal with all the same issues anyway eventually. It's probably largely just a matter of managing overwhelm as best as we can.

Plus we're still waiting on the NHS to offer us mental health support, which might -- in the long term at least -- help with some of the triggers... maybe 🥺

  11. CW: PSA - some maybe useful terms for autistic, ADHD, and AuDHD folks

We've been reading more into AuDHD burnout recently, but not enough to write a full post on that. However, in doing so, we've learnt some useful terms that we wanted to share.

    Monotropism (monotropic)

    • You focus more intensely on one task (or a small number of tasks).
    • Allows for deep, intense thinking and entering flow states.
    • Busy, unadjusted environments with lots of distractions and being interrupted mid-flow cause stress, anger, and exhaustion.
    • Common (but not universal) neurodivergent experience.

    Polytropism (polytropic)

    • You can switch your focus between multiple tasks at once.
    • Ability to switch between multiple tasks with a shallow focus.
    • More comfortable in busy, changeable environments.
    • Common (but not universal) non-neurodivergent experience.

    Alexithymia (alexithymic)

    • Sometimes called emotional blindness.
    • Difficulty in recognising, expressing, feeling, sourcing, and describing your own emotions.

Hope you all slept well :HeartHands:

Our brain and mind feels like they're running asynchronously at the moment, so we're awake in some ways and really sleepy in others 😴

Our present mood is a contradictory mixture of reflective, sombre, and calm, mixed in with a little realistic pessimism and a splash of hopeful optimism.

How can we be all these things at once?

Well, among many things, we're AuDHD :AutismSymbol: :ADHD_Butterfly: That should give you an idea of how contradictory we are at our core 😅🤭

  17. CW: Recovery from empathy overload

    Hey folks

Very glad that we made an executive decision to step away from fedi for most of the day whilst we were experiencing empathy overload (which some may refer to, or describe, as compassion fatigue).

If we hadn't, we definitely wouldn't have ended up posting stuff that we would have massively regreted 🥺

For those who've never experienced this, you are very fortunate. It's very much not a pleasant experience, especially as your empathy centre starts to slowly boot back up and anxiety, worries, and RSD start to creep back in 😅

For us, it's kind of like when Lt. Commander Data from Star Trek turns off his emotion chip in First Contact. However, unlike Data, we still retain the ability to feel annoyance, irritation, and rage. It's like a pea soup fog, but for emotions.

You'd think we've had learnt to prevent this happening to ourselves after the first time, or at least the second, but apparently we're a very slow learner 😑

It's linked to neurospicy folks (especially, but not exclusively, autistic peeps) and is often seen as a result of someone with hyper-empathy getting entirely overwhelmed.

Given that we're AuDHD and experience near-constant hyper-empathy, it doesn't surprise us in the slightest that our mind has a figurative emergency stop button to prevent a complete meltdown.

Just to clarify here, nobody else is to blame for us experiencing this: we did this to ourselves by trying to offer too many people too much support in too short a period of time.

As much as we don't want to do so, we may need to add some filters to our home feed to hide certain posts entirely, since we seem pathologically unable to stop trying to offer support... literally to the point of overloading part of our mind 🤦‍♀️

We would like to apologise in advance, as this will mean that we will likely not see some of your mental health posts at all 😞

If we're friends (or at least folks who occasionally chat elsewhere), then you probably know other ways to reach out to us if you need us urgently.

That said, despite experiencing hyper-empathy and offering a lot of support, we often can't provide the kind of personable support that many folks need.

Anyways, that's it. We're going to add the new filters to hide posts and head to bed.

    Gay nya-ight every-nyan :HeartHands:

Just finished reading #Pygmalion and am wondering who finds Henry Higgins to be some variation of neurospicy. It explains a lot of his behavior, I think, though Shaw himself (in intro and afterword) writes off his behaviour in other ways. Higgins is also a confirmed bachelor and not gay. He'd fall in the ace/aro category of written now.
