  1. I’m thinking a lot about the “firehose” this morning: my compulsion to find sources of stimulation. I can’t speak for all #adhd / #AuDHD folks, of course, but for me, “running out of internet” can be a very real annoyance. Hitting the top of all the feeds I browse, then feeling the discomfort of _boredom_, where the minutes drag on like days.

But the opposite, an unending firehose, leads to tunnelvision and hyperfocus. Responsibilities start getting neglected. I detach from other people. I get irritable if I’m interrupted.

Since work often involves periods of boredom, I alleviate this by doing relatively mundane Minecraft stuff on my modded home server in the background: enough to stimulate me a _bit_, but not enough to get sucked in, so I can switch back to work quickly.

None of it is really fulfilling, but it gets me through the day while staying reasonably productive.

  2. Very few things in this world are binary. Computers use it as an abstraction precisely because the world is analog and nuanced, and that’s far more difficult to deal with. #morningthoughts

  4. Life is the fight against entropy.

It doesn’t matter that entropy will win in the end. What’s important is that we keep pushing it back, while we are here.

  5. So we cleaned and packed up our office last Friday in preparation for moving to a new coworking space much closer to downtown. I am very excited about this, as it’ll make my commute much nicer when I do go in.

Anyways, a bunch of our monitors are going to be donated or e-wasted, and coworkers are like “those monitors are crap anyway”. And I’m like, they’re fairly large 1920x1080 monitors; not exactly high-end, but hardly crap. I scour thrift stores to find monitors far worse than that.

But sadly, I could not take any for myself. My commute to the office involves taking the train followed by the L; I’d’ve had to go home and then drive my Scion into the city to load up.

(What really irks me, though, is they were also disposing of some cheap but nice adjustable desks. I really could’ve used one of those!)

  6. Turned my alarm off this morning.
That was a mistake, as when I woke up it was 9:45.

I used to love sleeping in when I was younger. These days I think “I have wasted the very limited number of hours in my life that are *mine* to use as I please”.

And I mean, using them to sleep is perfectly valid. But I didn’t need to sleep ten hours. I think that happened because my ADHD brain, for lack of a better description, “hyperfocuses on sleep”. It gets locked into sleep just as it would anything else that feels good and requires effort to switch away from.

I have to try to accept these feelings without judgement, while also not succumbing to self-blame and anger for sleeping in. (Honestly, avoiding getting mad at my ADHD is something I work on *constantly*, because the anger just exacerbates things and increases my propensity to withdraw and hide from my responsibilities.)

  10. Sixteen years ago today was my first appointment with my endocrinologist. So, I've been a type 1 for sixteen years now. (+- a few days for the official word, and +- 6 months for onset of symptoms).
Without modern medicine, I'd be at least fourteen years in the grave.

  11. Why do we have to stand to be corrected?

e.g., "I stand corrected!" when somebody accepts a correction.

Why can't we sit corrected, lean corrected, lie down corrected, or lie in bed -- oh so very cosy, warm, snuggly, snugglable, and eepy -- corrected?

  12. Apparently a huge chunk of the almost 6 hours sleep we got last night was light sleep.

Must be why we're a bit more light sensitive this morning 🤭

For the last 6 years I've been occasionally returning to this gem with the same theme:

    🎶 maybe it's COVID? 🎶
    🎶 maybe it's cannabis? 🎶

Which usually gives me enough of a chuckle to briefly light the darkness.

  15. Re last repost: it occurs to me that rich and powerful men import, recruit, steal or purchase their victims where they can, and mostly move freely thru the world, while all the other maladapted, unevolved, toxic, abusive, less financially resourced men who feel small and powerless, incarcerate and turn their own children, families, students, employees, classes and community members into victims. Imagine feeling either so small or so big that you feel it's your right to sexually assault, exploit, and/or permanently damage/kill another human being... you can't vote or abort your way out of a society that was literally built on the backs and wombs of other human beings. Since no authority is coming to save us, the bootlicking, pedo-loving class that they are, I guess we need to prune and poison the classist, capitalist, racist, sexist, patriarchal roots of USA's tree, instead of the just pinch off the occasional sacrificial twig.
I'm not a "send them all to jail" person, bc it doesn't fix the problems in our society, and only benefits the same system that put them there. Incarceration of "criminals" doesn't seem to be working. As if you can't buy your way out of jail 🙄 and as if jail isn't just another profitable system of slavery and does absolutely ZERO for survivors of abuse. The way to a better world is to stop the abuse at every moment it occurs. Look around and seek out those that seem isolated into 1:1 or nuclear family cults. Strengthen your network. WE are the ones that will keep us safe, not the regime, not men in general, WE THE PEOPLE, who care about others that are not only ourselves. We the people that do not want to victimize or be victimized. We the people that want to pursue happiness, but NOT at the expense and lives of others. We the people that want liberty and justice FOR ALL.
Anyway, it's not just the wealthy who have the problem of abusing others, it's anyone who can get away with it. Let's fix that part, without giving the "justice system" fuel for their own "legal" slave class at taxpayer's expense.

  16. Apparently we did dream last night.

Our tracker suggests we were in REM for over an hour out of a total of about 5 and a half hours.

However, we no longer remember our dreams these days.

We went through a period of time where we could remember them vividly. We were even occasionally able to lucid dream.

Those days are long since past.

    Perhaps it's for the best.

  17. I'm wondering how many "blind spots" I have in the city I have lived in all my life. I've just read an article about a really big historical building which I have never been in nor even seen or knew about.
I looked at the map and I've been around it many many times, but always a block or two away, so I've never seen it because of other buildings in the line of sight. And it's even funnier because there's a whole subway station named after it, but the building itself is not directly at it and I always thought that it's just a historical name based on something that used to be there, not that it's actually still there.

  22. Half-Baked Idea:

Giving players the option to reskin ability names for their D&D player character.

e.g., renaming Wisdom to Empathy for a PC whose "wisdom" manifests as empathy for those around them

No mechanical changes: just a personalised reskin for flavour and to increase engagement / connection to PCs.

This thought brought to you by the desire we had (years before Sam Riegel created FCG and the Empathy domain Cleric) to one day create a class/subclass akin to the Celestial powers from Champions Online.

  26. First song that popped into our mind this morning was A Design For Life by the Manic Street Preachers.

Perfectly-reasonable song to think of first thing on a dreary, bleak Monday morning 😅

To quote from SmallishBeans' recent Hermitcraft videos:

    Everything is normal
    Everything is fine

Full song lyrics here for any who want / need them 🎶

To this day, we still misparse a tonne of the song, despite knowing the lyrics, especially whenever "for" is sung across 2 syllables (!!!), which sounds like "for her".

We now have a foxgirl headmate (Hannah).

  32. Yesterday, my daughter said that the whine of the 46-inch Behemoth CRT was “so loud”.

If you are not aware, CRTs running at standard definition NTSC refresh rates generate a distinctive hum at 15.734kHz due to vibrations in the deflection coils and flyback transformer. Most adults lose the ability to hear frequencies that high as they age, but younger folks can usually hear it. I know I certainly did.

What’s funny is that sound was ubiquitous throughout my childhood, to the extent that I (and most other kids of my generation) tuned it out. In a way it was a sort of superpower, being able to tell if a television was on nearby. And coincidentally, the world shifted to LCDs right around the time I got old enough for my ability to hear that frequency to fade.

Of course nowadays I have mild tinnitus taking the place of that familiar whine. I tune that out too. 😅

  33. Used to be very stressed when driving in the morning to work and stuck in the traffic jam...
Nowdays I drove my wife to work every morning (40-50 min. in one way) and I'm unexpectedly calm.... I know, we are in time and we will arrive 30 min. earlier every day, and then I still have so much time to get home or to the office before I have to work...
So I'm chilling in the traffic jam, listening great music, and just enjoying life.

Of course the new car helps, I can take all the route electric.
