Jacek mieszkał na skraju boru, między Wieprzem a Bugiem, w miejscu, gdzie ziemia miewała w sobie pamięć i niechętnie oddawała ją płytkiej orce. Mówili o nim: samotnik, zawzięty, człowiek z lornetką w oczach i karabinem w duszy. Nie pił, nie mówił wiele, nie łasił się do ludzi. Tylko las go znał. Las i śmierć.
Od dzieciństwa uczył się czytać ślady. Rysunek niedźwiedziej łapy z książki przyrodniczej umiał narysować szybciej niż literę A. Ale na Lubelszczyźnie niedźwiedzie nie chodziły od dawna. Były za to sarny, jelenie, dziki i bażanty. Na nie polował najczęściej.
Jego chata stała pośród pól, które co roku wykrwawiały się pod kukurydzę. W oknach wisiała siatka przeciw komarom i obraz Matki Boskiej Ostrobramskiej, który dostał od babci. Nad drzwiami wisiała głowa jelenia z krzywym porożem. Jacek mówił, że to symbol upartej wolności. Naprawdę był to jego pierwszy strzał, oddany w chłodnym poranku września.
Pewnego dnia, wczesną wiosną, Jacek poszedł w las. Nie dla trofeum. Dla ciszy. Coś go ciągnęło. Może to był wiatr, który tej nocy brzmiał jak stary głos. Może wspomnienie snu, w którym jelenie mówiły ludzkimi słowami, a jego strzelba zamieniała się w bukowy kij pasterski.
Wchodząc między dęby, zauważył ślady. Były świeże i niepewne. Małe. Jacek znał je. Młody wilk, szukający swojego miejsca w życiu. Poszedł za tropem bez pośpiechu, nie z bronią, tylko z pytaniem. I wtedy zobaczył.
Wilczek leżał obok starej nory borsuka, oplątany w stalowy drut. Ktoś go tu zostawił, może kłusownik, może ktoś, kto nie odróżnia przyrody od pola bitwy. Zwierzę nie skomlało. Nie warczało. Leżało cicho i patrzyło. W jego oczach nie było strachu. Było coś, czego Jacek nie potrafił nazwać, choć znał wszystkie słowa z lasu. Może to była zgoda. A może głęboka, dzika prawda.
Jacek uklęknął. Odetchnął tak, jak oddycha się przy grobie kogoś bliskiego. Wyjął multitool, przeciął drut. Wilczek wstał powoli, z trudem. Ich spojrzenia spotkały się jeszcze raz. Potem zwierzę zniknęło między leszczyną i młodymi świerkami.
Tamten powrót do domu był najdłuższy. Droga, którą znał na pamięć, ciągnęła się, jakby prowadziła przez jego własne wnętrze. W chacie Jacek zdjął strzelbę ze ściany. Nie zawahał się. Poszedł nad rzekę i wrzucił ją w nurt. Żelazo utonęło bez słowa.Od tamtej pory ludzie mówili, że Jacek zdziwaczał. Sadził krzewy na miedzach. Budował budki dla puszczyków. Zamiast opowiadać o strzałach, opowiadał o gniazdach. Raz nawet próbował zaszczepić czarną porzeczkę na dzikim agreście i twierdził, że przemówił do niego dzik. Dzieci przychodziły, żeby słuchać tych bajek, choć dorośli się krzywili.
W jego ogrodzie wyrósł dąb. Tuż obok miejsca, gdzie zakopał resztki amunicji. Na pniu tego drzewa Jacek powiesił tabliczkę: „Nie wszystko, co żyje, musi zabijać”.
Wilk szary (Canis lupus) powrócił na Lubelszczyznę w ostatnich dekadach, tworząc stabilne grupy rodzinne w lasach Roztocza i Puszczy Solskiej. Objęty ścisłą ochroną gatunkową, pełni kluczową rolę w regulowaniu liczebności kopytnych i bobrów, przyczyniając się do równowagi ekologicznej. Wilki unikają ludzi. Przypadki agresji są skrajnie rzadkie i wiążą się z dokarmianiem lub próbami oswojenia. Większe zagrożenie stanowią bezpańskie psy i nielegalne wnyki, które ranią zarówno zwierzęta dzikie, jak i domowe.
W miejscach, gdzie człowiek wybiera współistnienie, a nie dominację, wilk staje się nie wrogiem, lecz dobrym sąsiadem. -
